This is a modal window. “It was dumb… It was stupid. The 2015 champion was otherwise pleased with the year-on-year gains in Sydney with his car. “The hardest part is seeing the damage; we have a ride day tomorrow and the guys have to fix the car. This is a modal window.

With his fuel window closing, van Gisbergen pushed hard to create a gap. Van Gisbergen crossed the line nearly 20 seconds to the good, with Mostert a further 10 seconds behind De Pasquale. On lap 67, De Pasquale cleared Brown for the lead at Turn 5, with van Gisbergen moving into second two corners later. De Pasquale made his way past Brown at Turn 6 on lap 42 and eased away; at the end of the lap, van Gisbergen stopped for fuel and Super Softs. Down the pit straight, van Gisbergen sauntered past De Pasquale and took the lead, and immediately pushed away. The margin was 13 seconds once De Pasquale stopped on lap 52, handing the lead back to van Gisbergen. De Pasquale followed Heimgartner in at the end of lap 24; De Pasquale took on Super Softs, and Heimgartner Softs. Van Gisbergen’s lead blew out to 11.3s on lap 41 as De Pasquale continued to fight with Brown. Van Gisbergen’s lead was 6.8s by lap 28, with Heimgartner and De Pasquale quickly disposing of Le Brocq. By lap 3, De Pasquale had eked his lead to 1.1s; all the while, Andre Heimgartner ranged onto the back of the squabbling Brown and van Gisbergen. From there, Heimgartner began to eat into De Pasquale’s margin, and took the lead at Turn 6 on lap 8. De Pasquale won the start and led van Gisbergen, who was being pressured by Brown.

Sydney Supercars: Van Gisbergen three-stops to victory (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Shane van Gisbergen used a three-stop strategy to win the opening Supercars race of the season at Sydney Motorsport Park.

It's a great way to start." We've had some big [staff] changes, but the team feels the same. "It's a team win. By the end of that very same lap he was through both Brown and De Pasquale and on his way to a 19.5 second win. By that stage van Gisbergen was 12 seconds down the road, however the Kiwi opted to pit on that same lap to take on super softs, which committed him to a three-stopper. That sealed a perfect start to his title defence, the Kiwi joined on the podium by De Pasquale and a fast-finishing Chaz Mostert.

“I tried to get out of the car as quick as I could and just run to Frosty’s car to apologise and just explain that I didn’t just deliberately try to nail him after the start/finish line, I purely aquaplaned and the car was out of my control. I actually can’t believe it. “What do you do, when someone does something dumb and they come up and say sorry?

Kostecki, Slade, Winterbottom and van Gisbergen switched to wets on lap 65; Mostert and De Pasquale took on wets on lap 66. "It's cool to tick that box off the list... Mostert led the field away on the lap 75 restart, with Waters pressuring De Pasquale for the final podium position. The heavens opened with 14 laps remaining; at the time, Mostert held a 5.6s lead with Kostecki, De Pasquale and Slade covered by three seconds. Davison and Waters pushed each other along; all the while, a cat-and-mouse battle between Kostecki and De Pasquale emerged, the latter on softer rubber and with a fuel advantage. Will Davison and Cam Waters took on Super Softs on lap 27; on the following lap, Feeney took on 20 seconds of fuel and Softs. I don't know where to start. This is a modal window. The passing shower brought De Pasquale and Mostert to the Kostecki-Feeney battle; by lap 12, the quartet was covered by just 1.8s. Kostecki stopped on the following lap, took on 16 seconds of fuel, and reverted to Softs. De Pasquale pitted on lap 25, was fitted with Super Softs and took on 20 seconds of fuel. Mostert emerged atop a strategic 300km epic, with pole man Brodie Kostecki and Anton De Pasquale filling the podium.

Supercars Sydney: Mostert wins mixed-weather thriller (autosport.com)

Chaz Mostert snatched victory in a mixed-weather thriller to close out the opening round of the Supercars season at Sydney Motorsport Park.

When the race went green again on lap 51 Mostert put that tyre advantage to good use, immediately passing De Pasquale and Kostecki to take the lead. Unfortunately for Le Brocq the gamble didn't pay off, Mostert and Kostecki running him down before he ended up beached seven laps from home. Cam Waters finished fourth ahead of Andre Heimgartner, while van Gisbergen popped up in sixth despite his early struggles. The Walkinshaw driver found himself sitting in effective third and with the super soft tyres on his car. "I don't know where to start. But that proved to be the wrong call.

That sparked a safety car to set up a three-lap sprint to the finish line but, again, Mostert was too quick to be headed.
