Mac Studio: Apple's beastly new desktop (TechCentral)

Apple has unveiled a faster silicon chip for a new desktop, a high point in Apple's move to power its devices with microprocessors designed in house.

Its first use will be in the creative professional-focused Mac Studio computer. Apple will offer two versions of the Mac Studio, one with the M1 Max chip and the other utilising the M1 Ultra chip. The new Mac Studio desktop starts at $1 999 with the new M1 Max chip, or $3 999 for a “fused” M1 Ultra chip.

M1 Ultra can be configured with up to 128GB of high-bandwidth, low-latency unified memory that can be accessed by the 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 32-core Neural Engine, providing astonishing performance for developers compiling code, artists working in huge 3D environments that were previously impossible to render, and video professionals who can transcode video to ProRes up to 5.6x faster than with a 28-core Mac Pro with Afterburner.1

A few more notes about Apple’s ‘peek’ performance (unknown)

Here are my quick-hit reactions to Apple's March 8 event, at which the company updated the iPhone SE and iPad Air, rolled out a brand-new Mac and external ...

Since this is the end of the era, I’d expect Apple to turn the page soon and introduce the first wave of M2-based Macs. The M2 will probably be a somewhat modest improvement—you can’t make a big leap in performance and energy efficiency like the M1 every time out. The M1 Max chip itself is intelligent about saving energy by shutting off unused elements, so there doesn’t need to be a micromanager at a high level trying to spread the load. And it will please a lot of people who want a bit more than the 24-inch iMac, but don’t need to spend $2000 on a Mac Studio and then find a display to use with it. While it’s true that an Apple silicon-based Mac could probably do all that work itself, it’s important to remember that the Studio Display is also compatible with Intel Macs, including models from all the way back in 2016. The Mac Studio could be seen as an attempt to let the iMac and Mac mini go back to what they were before, with the Mac Studio shouldering the load as the provider of computing power to people who want it. There’s a good reason the M1 Ultra wasn’t named something like the M1 Max Duo: it’s not two chips, it’s two complete systems-on-a-chip combined into a single package. You heard Apple’s John Ternus right: The M1 Ultra is the final chip of the M1 era. It’s also processing the audio being sent to it, creating spatial audio effects for the Studio Display’s speakers. But here’s why: That A13 is doing the work of Center Stage, scanning the wide-angle camera image for faces and scaling and moving the view so that people are always in frame. With an A15 processor inside, I’d imagine this SE will be on sale for a couple of years at the very least. One of these days, this design will fade into oblivion like the original iPhone SE design (based on the iPhone 5). But Tuesday was not that day. I’m more struck by the fact that the iPad Air’s specs show just how efficient Apple can be about standardizing hardware and re-using it across multiple devices.

Apple’s Slow March Toward MacPad Continues (unknown)

The new iPad Air gets a desktop-grade chip. Consider it a sign of things to come.

But the inclusion of the M1 in the iPad Air, a tweener of a device that was always more expensive than the most basic iPad and less powerful than the most souped-up iPad, means yet another Apple tab has been elevated to “PC” status. But next week, Apple will begin shipping a device that closely resembles a MacBook with a touchscreen. Will Apple ever ship a MacBook laptop with a touchscreen?

Apple’s new strategy is to give — not tell — users what they want (unknown)

The pairing of a Mac Studio and Studio Display is a less expensive, more flexible alternative to the iMac Pro’s computer-inside-a-screen. I don’t want to overstate Ive’s influence — or understate his accomplishments — at a company that’s as massive and successful as Apple. But with each passing Apple event, it’s hard to ignore the fact that a product shift is happening at the company. The last iMac Pro started at $4,999, while the starting price of a Mac Studio with Studio Display is $3,598. At least, that was my takeaway after watching Apple comparing the performance of the Studio’s M1 Ultra with the kinds of Intel Xeon processors it used to include on its professionally focused all-in-one, and which Apple now includes in its more expensive Mac Pro. That means four Thunderbolt 4 ports on its rear and the continued existence of traditional USB-A, Ethernet, 3.5mm audio, and HDMI ports for the vast majority of users that still need them. Apple’s professionally focused Mac Pro was given a space-efficient cylindrical redesign that failed at the basic task of keeping power-hungry components (like those a professional user might actually need) cool.

'Peek Performance' as it happened: Here's everything Apple ... (PC World New Zealand)

iPhone SE, Mac Studio, M1 Ultra, Apple Studio Display, and more! Jason Cross (Macworld.com) on 09 March, 2022 09:13.

That would hardly be enough to justify the US$1,599 (AU$2,499) starting price (you can spend more for a tilt-and-height adjustable stand or nano-texture glass), but the Studio Display is more than just a monitor. This monster of a chip will debut in a whole new product: Mac Studio. Think of it like two or three Mac minis stacks on top of each other, with lots of Thunderbolt ports and even an SD card slot in the front. The regular iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini are now available in green, while the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are available in a new Alpine Green finish. It's available with an M1 Max, 32GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD starting at US$1,999 (AU$3,099). That's for a 24-core GPU version–the full 32-core GPU will cost AU$300 more, and you can get 64 GB of RAM and an SSD up to 8TB, too. It's a monster of a chip, and an impressive technical feat. In partnership with the MLB, Apple TV+ subscribers (and for a limited time, non-subscribers) will be able to watch a live double-header on Friday evenings, complete with a live pre- and post-game show. It is likely much more powerful than a Mac Pro that costs 2-3 times more. It appears to the operating system to be a single chip with 20 CPU cores, 64 GPU cores, and up to 128GB of memory. We also expected a new iPad Air update, and Apple didn't disappoint. M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max… and now M1 Ultra. That's right, Apple has a fourth variant of its M1 Apple Silicon, and it's essentially two M1 Max chips in a single package, connected by a custom high-speed interconnect. With the tagline Peek Performance, Apple's first event of 2022 contained a surprisingly robust array of new stuff. The price is still US$599 (AU$929), but the cellular-equipped model, which now has 5G support costs AU$1,159.

Apple unveils low-cost iPhone, souped-up Mac and iPad Air (New Zealand Herald)

Apple showed off an upgraded version of its affordable iPhone SE at an online event this morning, plus a lineup of new products with an emphasis on hardware ...

There is still a single 12 megapixel camera on the rear (you'll have to go higher up Apple's food chain for a trio of lenses), but you do get new features like better handling of high-contrast pictures, thanks to new software smarts powered by the A15. There's TouchID for unlocking, and you also get IP67 water resistance. Spark and Vodafone NZ are well into their 5G mobile network upgrades. The new Mac Studio comes in a case that closes to the size of a Mac Mini but packs unprecedented power thanks to the new M1 Ultra chip - available in both 24 core and 48 core versions. The new iPad Air gets the same Apple-designed M1 chip as the latest iPad Pro. Apple says that gives it a 60 per cent performance boost over the previous Air and makes it twice as fast as a Windows laptop in the same price range (the new iPad Air will sell from $1049 Wi-Fi only and start at $1299 for Wi-Fi plus 5G; pre-orders start this Saturday with delivery from Friday week). The signature new feature in the new iPhone SE (from $799) is 5G support, but the new model also gets tech-and-spec boosts across the board, including the addition of a high-performance processor (the A15 Bionic) and better battery life.

Apple unveils latest iPhone SE, to launch in NZ on March 18 (1 News)

It's a new version of its budget-priced iPhone that's capable of connecting to ultrafast 5G wireless networks.

The deal marks latest foray by a major tech company into a sports programming niche that traditionally has been dominated by long-established television networks. The iPhone itself remains Apple’s biggest gold mine, with sales of US$192 billion in its last fiscal year, despite supply shortages that have curtailed production. The company’s success in services also has turned into a regulatory mine field, sparking antitrust lawsuits and proposed legislations seeking to loosen Apple’s exclusive control on its iPhone app store, which collects lucrative commissions from digital transactions processed on the device. Even though 5G networks still aren’t widely available, the allure of faster connections turned out to be a major draw that helped spur more iPhone fans to upgrade from older models. All of them, like the iPhone 12s released during autumn 2020, can connect to 5G phones. Instead, Apple streamed the event from the theatre named after co-founder Steve Jobs at its Cupertino, California, headquarters.
