The Mac Studio is a new product line from Apple. It's compact in size -- like the Mac Mini, but taller -- coming in at 3.7 inches tall. It's the first machine from Apple that runs its brand-new M1 Ultra chip, which was announced alongside the machine at Apple's latest event. At 7.7 by 3.7 inches, the Mac Studio is designed to live under the formidable 27-inch monitor. Add in some $300 glare-reducing premium nano-texture glass and a $400 stand that enables you to adjust its height, and you're looking at a monitor totaling $2,299. (It's important to note that once you make a choice, your decision will be final: Apple won't let you add more memory or storage after you buy the computer.) At first glance, the bundle's base cost is about $3,600, which accounts for the $1,999 Mac Studio and $1,599 Studio Display. If you choose the highest possible processing power and storage options, however, the two devices converge to create an impressive desktop workspace for over $10,000.

By listening to users over the past 22 years, Apple has created a mid-range Mac that addresses a need better than no other Mac could fill. The Mac Studio is taller than a Mac mini for a reason: it has a blower that sits on top of the motherboard to keep its internals cool so you don't sacrifice speed. With each Mac that's released, it feels as if Apple took the time to understand the needs of the user and did what it could to address those needs. The new Mac Studio has a blocky design that conjures up memories of the Power Mac G4 Cube. The transparent polycarbonate shell was prone to cracking, and the design was compared to a tissue box. The G4 Cube did not have a fan to keep its innards at an optimal temperature.

That would cause the massive cooling needs to require the much taller case of the Mac Studio. The new Mac Studio overcomes that, providing all the ports the Intel Mac mini offered and then some. Assuming Apple can deliver a reliable machine in volume, the Mac Studio is a home run. The Mac mini has long been an Apple cash cow. Again, Apple managed to cool those same processors inside the MacBook Pro, and there's far less room for airflow inside that laptop than there is in the much bigger Mac mini internal cavity. To do that, let's take a moment to revisit the very last Intel-based Mac mini (which Apple is still selling). I wrote about that Mac mini last year. In fact, earlier this month, YouTuber Snazzy Labs proved that the M1 Mac mini logic board was small enough for them to be able to actually hack it into a half-size case. The 7.7-inch square footprint is identical to the Mac mini footprint, but it's 2.5 times taller. The new Mac Studio is 7.7 inches square. Until now, if you needed absolutely extreme Mac performance, you bought a Mac Pro.
