Crvena zvezda vs Rangers: UEFA Europa League background, form ... (UEFA.com)

Rangers are well placed to reach the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals for the first time with a 3-0 lead for the second leg against Crvena zvezda.

• Crvena zvezda and Rangers are the only two reigning national champions competing in this season's UEFA Europa League round of 16. • Rangers are appearing in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for a third successive season. • This is Rangers' fourth appearance in the UEFA Europa League round of 16, and their record-equalling third in a row. • The Glasgow giants have won 37 of the 45 UEFA ties in which they have built a first-leg lead at home. The Austrian international's next appearance in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, will take him level with Daniel Carriço and Dries Mertens on top of the competition's all-time appearance list with 61. • This is the 36th UEFA competition tie in which Crvena zvezda have lost the first away leg. • This is the Belgrade side's first appearance in the UEFA Europa League round of 16. Although they lost their opening two group games – against Lyon (0-2 h) and Sparta (0-1 a) – they remained unbeaten thereafter, taking four points off Brøndby (2-0 h, 1-1 a) and clinching second place with a 2-0 victory over Sparta at Ibrox on Matchday 5 in their first match under new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who had replaced Steven Gerrard. This is the furthest the club has progressed in a UEFA competition for 30 years. Having advanced as runners-up in each of their previous two campaigns, in 2017/18 and 2020/21, they clinched first place in Group F on 11 points with a 1-1 draw away to runners-up Braga on Matchday 6. With no away goals rule in place, the Scottish side went through after winning the extra game 3-1 at Arsenal's Highbury. Aleksandar Katai then had a penalty saved by Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor before Leon Balogun made it 3-0 early in the second half.

West Ham vs Sevilla: UEFA Europa League background, form guide, previous meetings (UEFA.com)

A fascinating second instalment of this UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie is in store after competition specialists Sevilla claimed a narrow win over debutants West Ham United in the first leg in Spain. • West Ham were comfortable winners of UEFA ...

• The Andalusian side are appearing in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for a record sixth time. Since that defeat by Kaiserslautern they have prevailed in all three ties after winning the first home leg 1-0, most recently against Žalgiris Vilnius in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round (5-0 a). In each of their last two continental campaigns, in 2015/16 and 2016/17, they were eliminated in the UEFA Europa League qualifying phase by Romanian club Astra Giurgiu. They also prevailed 2-1 over the two legs, one of six knockout ties against English teams, including two finals, that Sevilla have won, the sole defeat coming against Leicester City in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (2-1 h, 0-2 a). • The East Londoners won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1964/65, beating 1860 München 2-0 in the Wembley final, and would reach the semi-finals, final and quarter-finals of that same competition over the next 16 years. His one Liga game against Sevilla was a 4-3 home win on 22 February 2015. A 2-0 home win against Wolfsburg kept them in the hunt going into Matchday 6, but a 1-0 defeat in Salzburg left them in third place. They opened up with draws against each of their Group G opponents – 1-1 at home to Salzburg and away to Wolfsburg and 0-0 in Lille – before losing 1-2 at home to the French champions on Matchday 4. • Sevilla are competing in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for a record sixth time. • Sevilla have won all but two of the 22 UEFA competition ties in which they claimed a home victory in the first leg, the sole exceptions when they failed to defend a one-goal advantage against Kaiserslautern in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup third round (1-0 h, 0-4 a) and Leicester in that UEFA Champions League tie five years ago. It arrived in spectacular style on the hour from Sevilla forward Munir, who half-volleyed home on the run from Marcos Acuña's free-kick. • A sixth-placed finish in the 2020/21 Premier League earned West Ham a first appearance in the group stage of a UEFA competition.

Munir strike gives Sevilla edge over West Ham in Europa League (FRANCE 24)

Munir El Haddadi's sweet half-volley put Sevilla in sight of the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday after a narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham.

The decisive moment came on the hour after Lucas Ocampos was quicker to a loose ball out on the right and went down over the outstretched leg of Kurt Zouma. After winning the Europa League four times since 2014, Sevilla are arguably the team to beat but West Ham sit sixth in the Premier League and, until recently, were in the driving seat to finish in the top four. They remain in touch with the six-time champions and will now hope to turn the result around in front of their own fans in London.

Can Rangers win the Europa League, Hibs need goals, Hearts ... (The Scotsman)

Rangers' impressive form in Europe continued on Thursday night when they defeated Red Star Belgrade 3-0 at Ibrox.

Dundee, it has to be remembered, haven't won the Scottish Cup since 2010. Hearts host St Mirren in an evening kick-off on Saturday and have a host of injury issues, while the Buddies come into it after winning against Dundee. Two games are played on Sunday with Hibs looking to score a goal when they travel to Fir Park to face a Motherwell side without a league win in ten. Following the win over the Serbian giants, their odds have been slashed.

It’s unfortunate, but at least we have another opportunity in the second leg to put it right. Now it was another huge step playing in the last 16 against Sevilla, champions of this competition six times. I’ve played a few away games and the support we get every week is fantastic. We tried to play our game tonight. We’re just looking forward to the next leg. It’s only seven days away until we can get out there and hopefully put it right.
