Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directed the first episode of 'Tokyo Vice,' the new HBO Max series, starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe.

Michael Mann, the celebrated director who helped create the original Miami Vice TV series in the '80s and directed the 2006 film, is an executive producer on Tokyo Vice and directed the first episode. In Japan, the first episode will land on WOWOW — the country's leading premium pay TV broadcaster who co-produced the show with HBO Max — on April 7, with subsequent episodes recurring every Sunday from April 24 through June. Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe Star in First Trailer for HBO Max ... (Complex)

The first trailer for HBO Max's crime saga 'Tokyo Vice,' shows Ansel Elgort as an American journalist reporting on police corruption in Japan's capital.

Created and written by award-winning playwright J.T. Rogers, the cast is rounded out by Rachel Keller, Ella Rumpf, Rink Kikuchi, Hideaki Itō, Show Kasamatsu, and Tomohisa Yamashita. Like many other productions, Tokyo Vice faced a major delay when production in Japan was halted on March 17, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Veering into the seedier side of the sprawling metropolis, from the corrupt police actively working with criminals to the world of hostess clubs, Tokyo Vice looks like the kind of show for anyone who loves a good seedy underbelly. The dramatic first trailer showcases the sleek look of the series, which was filmed on location in Japan.

Tokyo Vice Trailer: Ansel Elgort Dives Into Japan's Criminal ... (Screen Rant)

HBO Max unveils the official Tokyo Vice trailer seeing Ansel Elgort as an eager journalist diving into Japan's criminal underworld.

While Watanabe has appeared in a number of Japanese shows throughout his career, Elgort has exclusively appeared on the big screen since making his debut in 2013's Carrie remake, creating an interesting point of curiosity as to how he performs in a series compared to film. The video sees Ansel Elgort's Jake Adelstein as he immerses himself in Japan's criminal underground in the hopes of making a name for himself in the field of journalism. However, as he begins making his way up the ranks and learning of the corruption of the Japanese underworld, he finds himself unable to know who to trust whilst further being drawn in to the mystery.

'Tokyo Vice' Trailer: Ansel Elgort & Michael Mann Team Up For A ... (The Playlist)

Ansel Elgort is an American journalist embedded in Tokyo in the upcoming crime series, "Tokyo Vice."

“Tokyo Vice” stars Ansel Elgort, who was recently seen in the Oscar-nominated film, “West Side Story.” Elgort, of course, has recently been in a heap of controversy over the past couple of years, as he finds himself accused of sexual misconduct. This has led to him not really having many projects arriving and being left off the publicity for “West Side Story.” But there’s no denying he’s all over the marketing for “Tokyo Vice,” as the leading man of the series. As seen in the trailer, “Tokyo Vice” follows the story of an American journalist, in the late ‘90s, trying to make a name for himself in Japan. While trying to be the best damn journalist, the American finds himself getting deeper and deeper into the Tokyo criminal underworld, where he crosses paths with some dangerous people.
