He said a dead pilot whale was also found at this site. "The local community in Golden Bay are incredible. Decisions to euthanise stranded whales are not taken lightly and euthanasia is carried out when it is the humane course of action."

Whales found stranded at Farewell Spit, some dead (RNZ)

Thirty-six whales have been confirmed as stranded on Farewell Spit at the top of the South Island, and some have died.

The Department of Conservation travelled to the area to confirm the stranding. Project Jonah said DOC rangers were on site assessing the situation and would provide another update in the morning. They said the whales were spread along several kilometres of the beach.

Thirty-one whales dead after Farewell Spit stranding (RNZ)

Farewell Spit is a common site for whale strandings - more than 60 pilot whales stranded just last month, and 28 of them died. Last February, 49 long-finned pilot whales stranded on Farewell spit - nine died and the rest were successfully refloated.
