Greive added a second in the second minute of stoppage time, pouncing when Vakié slipped trying to cover a long ball forward from Tommy Smith, the All Whites’ captain in the absence of Winston Reid and Chris Wood. The Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea will meet in the other semifinal, after finishing first in group A and second in group B respectively.

Bill Tuiloma headed in from a corner, before two cool Wood finishes extended his national scoring record to 32. Greive showed his current confidence with a clever Hernan Crespo style flick, after the driven cross from Joey Champness was slightly behind him. Callum McCowatt and Tim Payne were the others introduced. Four players were brought in for the first time in this tournament, with Swansea City goalkeeper Jamie Searle making his debut and Greive getting his first start. The All Whites made a bright start – in complete control – and opened the scoring in the eighth minute. The only concern – similar to the two previous games – was the lack of a clinical edge – as the All Whites failed to make the most of some gilt edged chances in the first half.

Like elite athletes at their peak, our sports journalists are highly trained in the art of news. So we're asking you to support us with more than your attention. It's great that we've had the opportunity to give everybody some significant minutes to show what they're capable of. Ahead of the New Caledonia match, Hay had indicated he had a fair idea of his semifinal lineup and had worked back from that to select the team for the final group stage match. There is unlikely to be a repeat of that scoreline when the two teams meet at Grand Hamad Stadium in their semifinal, but the All Whites will be at full strength, or close to it, for the first time in qualifying, and will be looking to go up another level. A 7-1 win over New Caledonia was added to their 4-0 win over Fiji and 1-0 win over Papua New Guinea on Friday [NZ time] as they finished on top of group B at the eight-team tournament in Qatar.
