We had a really intense, great review from last week’s game – just brutally honest about everything – and guys went away and worked on it. “It’s a positive sign from where we were to where we are now. I feel that in our training sessions; the intensity’s just getting higher and higher, faster and faster,” Kepu said.

DHL Super Rugby Pacific's heritage round saw all six games completed, a rare event during the Covid-affected season with crowds back in the picture in New ...

First off it was wing Caleb Clarke, cutting back on the angle from a pass by second five-eighths Bryce Heem. First five-eighths Beauden Barrett positioned himself on the sideline from a five-metre scrum and although there was a mix-up at the base of the scrum, halfback Sam Nock managed to clear the ball to Barrett whose speed got him over. Another goal-line melee effort saw flanker Fraser McReight follow up with another try which was followed almost immediately by an intercept to wing Jock Campbell that sealed the deal. But hooker Codie Taylor had the final say scoring from a lineout maul to complete the redemption win. But soon after, in attempting to stop wing Tony Pulu scoring in the corner, Banks went high, clashed heads with Pulu, without wrapping his arms in an attempted tackle and was red-carded for his effort resulting in a penalty try for the Force. A piece of magic from wing Manasa Mataele down the sideline, allowed him to pass inside for centre Kyle Godwin to score. It was only seven minutes before the southerners scored the first of their five tries, to No8 Cullen Grace, who marked his return to best form by charging through the defence to score. An orthodox backline movement saw fullback Will Jordan free on the end to cross for the Crusaders. Just before halftime the Chiefs showed they could also score off a set lineout play and from a superb Quinn Tupaea pass Nankiville crossed for his second in wide open space. It seemed the Chiefs were down and out but that man Nankiville ran rampant through the mid-field and passed to replacement halfback Cortez Ratima for the try. But it was all too late as prop Cabous Eloff and prop Cameron Orr scored tries to extend the lead en route to their first win of the season. Quelling the Highlanders' determination carried the Blues to their win in Dunedin. It seemed every time the Blues scored, and they touched down four times, the Highlanders lifted their motivation to almost immediately wipe out the advantage in the second half. Eight minutes into the second half, Rebels second five-eighths Raymond Nu'u somehow found space, in the previously solid Drua defence, to run 30m to score. Umaga-Jensen's passing skill came to the fore again when turning the ball inside to wing Josh Moorby, who took a gap then out-paced the defence to score. As the ball came clear, it was flicked to Funaki who levelled the scores forcing the game to its golden point.

Moana Pasifika have won their first game of Super Rugby Pacific with a golden point victory over the Hurricanes at Mt Smart Stadium.

Moana Pasifika stun Hurricanes in extra-time to secure first-ever win (RugbyPass)

After weeks of Covid uncertainty and season-opening drubbings, Moana Pasifika are finally on the board in Super Rugby Pacific.

Holding a 19-12 lead heading into the match’s final 10 minutes, the chance for Moana Pasifika take the match to golden point and potentially secure a victory for the first time in their history was still very much on the cards. Perhaps there was a touch of fortune about the half-time stalemate for Moana Pasifika given a potential try on debut for Morgan was rubbed out because of a forward pass by Umaga-Jensen. The loss of a man would come back to bite them, though, as a spectacular offload by Tima Fainga’anuku put Aumua away for a 40-metre canter to dot down in the right-hand corner, which is where Rayasi would have been if he was still on the park.

Emotions were flowing at Mt Smart Stadium as coach Aaron Mauger and captain Sekope Kepu revealed what their historic win over the Hurricanes meant.

The belief was there at half-time, and then it was just backing the process, ‘how are we going to break these guts down and try to earn an opportunity?’ I’m extremely proud.” Like elite athletes at their peak, our sports journalists are highly trained in the art of news. “The giants that went before us...that was for them and our fans. The boys were nice and calm. Moana Pasifika's discipline was still poor, and they are conceding too many penalties. We just needed to string it together.

Moana Pasifika record historic extra time win over Hurricanes (1 News)

A late try from Solomone Funaki levelled the scores, before Danny Toala scored in extra-time to send Moana Pasifika players and coaches into hysterics.

The Hurricanes had overwhelming advantages of territory and possession in the first half but Moana Pasifika defended and competed superbly.

Possession levelled out in the second half and the Hurricanes found themselves under pressure as often as they had applied pressure in the first half when penalties went against Moana Pasifika 13-1.

All Blacks fullback Jordie Barrett scored the first try of the match after only six minutes, running off a short pass from centre Peter Umaga-Jensen and scything through the Moana Pasifika defence to score.

Umaga-Jensen almost made a try for first-five Aidan Morgan in the 15th minute but saw it disallowed for a forward pass.

Winger Josh Moorby scored a brilliant try on debut for the Hurricanes in the 56th minute but Moana Pasifika replied in the 65th minute when Levi Aumua dashed down the left touchline to score.

The Hurricanes scored quickly through replacement prop Alex Fidow but Moana Pasifika tied the score at 19-19 with a try to Solomone Funaki three minutes from fulltime.

The winning try came against the run of play, when replacement prop Tau Koloamatangi forced a critical turnover with Moana Pasifika in deep defense.

Replacement Danny Toala scored a try in the fifth minute of golden-point extra time on Friday to give Moana Pasifika its first-ever win in Super Rugby, 24-19 over the Hurricanes.

Coming off a 59-12 loss to the Chiefs last weekend, the Super Rugby Pacific newcomers were given no chance of beating the Hurricanes despite home advantage.

Though they lacked possession and were camped in their own territory for most of the match, Moana Pasifika matched the Hurricanes try for try and grabbed the crucial score when the match became only the second in Super Rugby to be decided in extra time.

Moana Pasifika are making their debut in Super Rugby this season, bringing together players from Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. In a checkered season, disrupted by Covid-19, they had played only two matches in five rounds before Friday’s match gave them their historic first-ever Super Rugby win.

“We had to work hard from last week and we showed pride and passion,” Moana Pasifika captain Sekope Kepu said.

“We worked really hard in the pre-season and we knew we had it in us.
