The Empoli defender had started the move โ€“ driving towards the penalty box โ€“ before latching onto a rebound after his pass was deflected away. They took a combative approach, picking up two bookings in the first eight minutes with robust challenges. It had a different feel to the other games played in the past six months and Tahiti were tough, physical and well organised. Tahiti were looking for an unlikely upset, their first win since 1995. There had been a shift in intensity from the All Whites, who were knocking on the door, with Elijah Just screwing a shot wide, but the goal wouldn't come, as Tahiti were quick to close down spaces. The game was a sharp introduction to the realities of knockout football for many in the All Whites' group.

The All Whites are now only two wins away from qualifying for the World Cup after wearing down Tahiti in the Oceania semifinal.

All Whites battle past Tahiti (RNZ)

The All Whites are through to the final of the Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament in Qatar after beating Tahiti 1-nil in their semi-final.

The second-half continued in much the same vein. The always dangerous Chris Wood then headed a half-chance wide as Tahiti's defensive rearguard held firm to round out an embattled first-half performance. New Zealand then had the best opportunity of a physically contested first period.
