Louisa Wall's departure a loss for MP independence (Newsroom)

Departing Labour MP Louisa Wall's successes seemed to come in spite of her party, rather than because of it, writes Sam Sachdeva.

Reader donations are critical to what we do. While the advent of MMP has had many benefits, it has concentrated parties’ power at a central level while leaving us with no end of sycophantic politicians - of all stripes - willing to ask patsies and defend their boss’s screw-ups to the dying end. It’s my ball, I will choose.” While the advent of MMP has had many benefits, it has concentrated parties’ power at a central level while leaving us with no end of sycophantic politicians – of all stripes – willing to ask patsies and defend their boss’s screw-ups to the dying end. While Ardern did have some praise for Wall in the media statement announcing her resignation, describing her as “a hero to many”, the lack of reaction from the wider party seemed telling. Yet the abrupt nature of her departure from Parliament, having never served as a minister and with the wounds of a controversial deselection still fresh in her mind, means it is hard to shake the sense her very real achievements came in spite of Labour, not because of it.

Thank you, Louisa Wall (The Spinoff)

On that night in April in 2013, I came out of my show with more rights than I went into it with. Notably, she came to the defence of Laurel Hubbard, the transgender weightlifter who competed at the 2020 Olympics. She stated, with no doubt, that Hubbard had every right to be there. I also remember, with the kind of pride that I rarely reserve for elected officials, the fearless statements of Louisa Wall in that select committee. I could end this piece by thanking her for this bill alone, but Wall has never stopped speaking out for the rights of queer people. When it passed, Wall compared the feeling to winning a World Cup final – a feeling that she can actually speak to, having won the Women’s Rugby World Cup with the Black Ferns in 1998. Last year, she told The Spinoff that she received “thousands and thousands” of pieces of correspondence opposing the bill.

Louisa Wall 'remarkably effective' MP, 'a great loss to Labour' (1 News)

MPs across the political spectrum say they'll miss the Labour list MP.

That came one week after Wall broke ranks and accused China of harvesting the organs of political prisoners and using Uyghur Muslims as slave labour. The National Party gave her a speaking spot as a result. During the 2020 election, Wall gave up trying to defend her Manurewa electorate seat following a legal battle over who was allowed to stand for Labour's nomination. She has." And that has often meant building wide Parliamentary support from all parties in Parliament," Wall said. I will miss her and I think the Parliament will too."

Labour MP Louisa Wall to resign (RNZ)

RNZ understands Labour list MP Louisa Wall will announce her resignation this afternoon after 14 years.

"The kind of person that every Parliament needs. She is also a former Black Ferns rugby player, having been in the team's first World Cup-winning squad in 1995 and winning Women's Player of the Year in 1997. She has been relentless in her pursuit of human rights for all. It's made a more inclusive and accepting society and that will always bring me a great sense of pride." "As an MP my approach has been to identify problems and work to fix them with whoever I can. When you look back at my successful Members Bills one thing that stands out is the cross-section of support I often had to build to get them passed, often forming collaborative alliances."
