Premier League confirm U-turn over introduction of five substitutes ... (Evening Standard)

Premier League clubs have confirmed the re-introduction of a five substitutes rule from the start of next season.

However, the prospect of another truncated season – with the Premier League due to lose seven weeks of the 2022-23 campaign to accommodate the mid-season winter World Cup in Qatar – has persuaded the rebels to come onboard. However, the Premier League has compiled data on the potential benefits to player welfare, which has been shared with clubs. In October, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), who make the laws of the game, recommended that five substitutions be implemented permanently in the sport but some Premier League clubs argued that it gives an unfair advantage to those with deeper squads.

Premier League talking points: Must-win for Man Utd, can Patrick ... (Sky Sports)

Can Liverpool make it 10 wins in a row vs Watford? Is Man Utds Leicester clash must-win? Will Patrick Vieira come back to haunt Arsenal?

Arsenal have been good against the sides they should beat, and this is a game they should really win, but this one does look a tough proposition, and Vieira will be looking to impress against the club that helped to make him in English football." I know they are away from home against a very good West Ham side, but this is a weekend where Watford play Liverpool and Burnley play Man City. So, you'd expect those two sides to struggle and that could leave the door open for Everton, who could go six points clear of the drop zone with a win." It will be interesting to see whether this new-look Newcastle defence can deal with the threat of Kane and Son." "So, Howe has done a really impressive job on the field and that defensive record is really impressive. I can see this being a huge test for the Gunners." How are they going to get the ball to Richarlison? How are they going to create chances? "However, he has taken a lot of players that either were not in Bruce's plans or who were not playing well under Bruce, and he has turned them into key players. He has been one of their better players in recent weeks and will be crucial if Everton are to beat the drop. "It's similar to Liverpool's situation and their chase for the title. "Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who was the club's top scorer last season, has barely featured all season and he only has three league goals to his name in this campaign. "You just wonder whether those two games have given Leeds the momentum they need to stay out of the relegation battle. "I think Chelsea, the team, deserve plenty of credit for what they have done since Roman Abramovich announced he was selling the club.

Brentford fans will be pleased to see they have spent just £3.5m on agents' fees in the last year, which would represent fine business if they manage to stay up. Still, though, the Merseyside club found a way to spend £11.5m on agents last year. Watford fans will be furious to find out they spent £12.6m on agents' fees in the last year - placing them seventh overall and behind only the Big Six - only to find themselves languishing in the drop zone. The England star's agent is Jonathan Barnett. The Blues had spent £35m on agents' fees in the previous year after splashing out £222m on new players in the summer of 2020. Manchester United are the second-biggest spenders, having forked out more than £29m to agents in a year in which they signed Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend (The Guardian)

Harry Maguire can build on England display, N'Golo Kanté faces the league's best ball-winner and a character test for Everton.

Arteta is upbeat on the chances of Bukayo Saka being fit to play after recovering from Covid, while Vieira is hoping for good news on the hamstring injury that kept Wilfried Zaha out of Ivory Coast’s Wembley meeting with England. These late fitness tests look likely to have a significant impact on Monday’s match – and Arteta would dearly love to have Saka available. The question of whether the players are all ready to pull in the same direction – and ready to fight for Lampard – looks likely to be answered in the coming week. Watkins and John McGinn both scored on international duty for England and Scotland respectively, while Jacob Ramsey got his name on the scoresheet with a thunderbolt for England Under-21s against Andorra. Despite the mugging they were subjected to in October’s reverse fixture, Villa’s confidence is likely to be high going into this West Midlands derby against a side that have had two weeks to put the trauma of their last-gasp defeat by Leeds behind them. Aston Villa were unimpressive in defeat at the hands of Arsenal in their most recent top-flight fixture, a game in which Danny Ings was dropped to make room for an additional midfielder in Emi Buendía. With the Wolves manager, Bruno Lage, favouring a back three, Ings is likely to return to partner Ollie Watkins up front, where the pair will be tasked with creating spaces in which Philippe Coutinho can work his magic. Harry Kane pulled the strings that day, form he carried into a match-winning performance for England against Switzerland, and if the forward can continue to dovetail with Son Heung-min as effectively as he has been recently, Champions League qualification is entirely achievable for fifth-placed Spurs. Arsenal currently occupy fourth – three points ahead of Antonio Conte’s men with a match in hand – but are faced with a tougher run-in that includes trips to Chelsea, West Ham and Spurs, and a home game against Manchester United. A Contefied Tottenham appear to have every chance of overhauling their north London rivals. Maguire may be happy to see that his old teammate Jamie Vardy will be missing due to a knee injury: Vardy has the sort of pace that can expose Maguire when turned, but the defender’s form for the national side shows what he is capable of as part of a well-coached and cohesive team.

Premier League without VAR: Liverpool lead table above Man City ... (ESPN)

Fans always argue about which Premier League teams get the better of the VAR decisions, and this season we aim to find the definitive answer.

One decision that did go against them was the disallowed goal at Burnley when the score was 1-1, and that cost them two points. ESPN brings you the VAR Effect Table. We've taken all 94 VAR decisions in the Premier League so far this season and calculated how they might have changed the outcome of matches. Eddie Howe's team, once one of the favourites for relegation, shoot up four places into the top half of the table after seeing their points total increase by five. This takes into account league position, and a team's goal-scoring and defensive records across the season. They then gained two when their 2-2 home draw against Burnley is calculated as a 4-0 victory as Sadio Mane had a goal ruled out by the VAR for handball when the score was already 2-0 to Liverpool. Everton can also feel hard done by with VAR, as they climb away from the drop zone. If a penalty has been cancelled, it is considered to have been awarded and scored, unless the team in question has a penalty-conversion record below 50% over the season. Watford were losing at Everton when Joshua King's goal was allowed due to an incorrect offside flag. It's not just about the number of times a team gets a favourable VAR call or about how many goals are affected. That City win is a defeat without VAR. (Think of it like a Marvel timeline, or the plot of any time travel movie.) If below 50%, a penalty may be judged to have been missed.

Right now it is possible to imagine that this team cannot be beaten either, after a night when they actually trailed but still demonstrated the qualities that set them apart. The finest side in Europe delivered a performance that will never be forgotten on a stage that has never been beaten. No game has had more people in it all season – and that includes the men’s clásico. No game has had more goals either, Barcelona tested but ultimately too good. They haven’t had a night quite like this here for a long time, maybe ever, ending it elated.

Barcelona, Real Madrid deliver Champions League show on a ... (ESPN)

Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-2, but the more important number was the 91553 fans in attendance as Camp Nou hosted a spectacle for women's football.

There was something about the wait for the attendance figure -- much longer than at a typical game -- that made it feel even more significant, a grand reveal. "The atmosphere was brutal," Giraldez said. It was still loads, and it was still loud. She knew how far they had travelled, recalling late night training sessions with poor facilities, a game that was far from professional, but still not far enough in the past. But also enough jeopardy to give the feeling that this was a contest, Madrid certainly playing their part. Filling the ground was a mission, a challenge, a kind of collective endeavour. Wednesday's game was the third time they have scored five goals in seven Champions League games; they have scored four twice. Once the sales had been confirmed, everyone knew a record was possible. And that's super-cool, something to show the world," Ingrid Engen had said the day before. It was the biggest crowd a women's game had ever drawn to a stadium in Spain, beating the previous record -- when Barcelona visited Atletico in 2019 -- by over 30,000. "We're talking about selling out the stadium in three days, and two months before the game." This was the biggest crowd Camp Nou had seen all season, bigger than the men's Clasico, and by more than 5,000.

He likes to play on the biggest stages and it is difficult to find players like that in top clubs." The Liverpool games are less of a cut-and-dried issue. Sterling has attempted 31 tackles to Mahrez’s 17 this season, amounting to per-90 averages of 1.37 and 0.82. We struggle together because I know the quality that he has," the Catalan said last month. Mahrez is now gunning for a fourth winners’ medal in England’s top flight, and any trophy City lift come May is likely to have his prints all over it. After an interminable VAR delay, Mahrez confidently strode forward to dispatch a nerveless penalty beyond Marwin Hitz before Phil Foden sealed the victory. Manchester City have played the majority of the past two seasons without a recognised striker. His record with Leicester had also been patchy. On the biggest occasions, that cutting edge can prove decisive. Yet Guardiola himself has stated his team needs a centre-forward, and speculation linking Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland continues to mount. Meanwhile, Mahrez is also more effective on the dribble, winning 51% of his take-ons in the league this term, to his rival's 42%. Better was to come in the semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. Back in the city of his birth, the winger squeezed a free-kick through the wall to give Guardiola’s men a 2-1 away win and they rammed home that advantage with a 2-0 triumph back in Manchester.

Premier League agrees to the return of five substitutes (We Are Hooligans)

The Premier League has decided to allow five substitutions in a game next season, the first time since COVID ruled the league.

From next season, clubs will be permitted to use five substitutions. Premier League clubs then voted against continuing the rule in following seasons. A total of nine substitutes can be named on the bench by either team.

Trout and Rendon appear highly motivated to reclaim their status in the game, while the Angels just want more of the same from Ohtani after his historic MVP season. While the Rangers should be markedly improved, ending their streak of five consecutive losing seasons is a much more viable goal than making the playoffs. Maddon is hoping improvement in his rotation also comes from within, including continued growth from Suárez and Sandoval along with the arrival of rookie Reid Detmers. If everything goes well on the mound, the Angels could at least contend for their first playoff berth since 2014. Outlook: The Rangers followed 102 losses last year with a record offseason spending spree of more than a half-billion dollars. The Astros return Gurriel, who hit .319 to win the AL batting title, and Brantley, who was tied for second at .311. Also back is Alvarez, who led the team with 33 homers and 104 RBIs in his first full season after struggling with injuries his first two years. Outlook: The big-budget, star-studded Angels take another shot at ending their embarrassing skids of six straight losing seasons and seven in a row out of the playoffs. After a surprising 90 wins last season, Seattle begins this year with expectations of contending for the playoffs and ending its two-decade drought without a postseason appearance. The low-budget A's have followed this pattern for years, contending for stretches and then sending away stars to re-tool before the roster gets too expensive. Then soon after the lockout ended, the A's traded away stars Olson, Chapman and Bassitt, signaling another shift to rebuilding mode. The moves Seattle made addressed major needs, bringing in Ray as the No. 1 starter and adding two key bats in Winker and Suárez in a trade with Cincinnati. Haniger and France will be tasked with trying to match their output at the plate from last season. The jump Seattle's offense needs could depend largely on the development of young outfielder Jarred Kelenic, the expected arrival of prized prospect Julio Rodríguez and the health of 2020 AL Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis. Seattle's bullpen was exceptional last season, and if it matches that performance and the team gets an offensive bump, the Mariners may finally find themselves back in the postseason. Outlook: After reaching the World Series for the third time in five seasons, the Astros expect to contend for a title again this year.
