“Shah has proposed a model that is commercially viable, financially feasible and technically sustainable,” the source said. “The project will ensure that there is a real transformation at the grassroots level with age-group cricketers being the focus.” While the goal is the same, the new plan will approach it from a more “sustainable” angle, the source, a member of Shah’s team, said.

South Africa, England meet in semi for right to face Australia (cricket.com.au)

The 2022 women's ODI World Cup is down to just three teams now, with South Africa and England meeting in the second semi-final with Australia juggernaut ...

England have historically had the better of South Africa, but the Proteas have come a long way since their heartbreaking semi-final loss five years ago. If a semi-final or final is tied, the teams shall compete in a Super Over. And if the Super Over is a tie, subsequent Super Overs will be played until a winner is determined. A first World Cup century continues to elude Laura Wolvaardt butshe has been incredibly consistent, passing fifty in all but one of her innings at this tournament so far. Fortunately, there are reserve days for both semi-finals and the final, so England hopefully need not fear a repeat of their 2020 T20 World Cup semi-final exit. Off-spinner Charlie Dean originally was not included in England's XI but has made a significant impact since being introduced. Sadly for fans outside of New Zealand, the country's borders remain closed to tourists, with the recently announced re-opening to Australians not taking place until April 12.

C40 Cities launches research on South Africa green jobs - C40 Cities (C40)

C40's latest report shows that taking ambitious city climate action by 2030 could create and support nearly 1.1 million green jobs across South Africa.

As the ‘Creating Local Green Jobs in South Africa’ report shows, not only is investing in a just and green recovery a vital way to build more prosperous, sustainable and inclusive communities, but it can also create hundreds of thousands of good quality green jobs.” The report also highlights that significant investment from public and private sources is needed for cities to realise their full potential in terms of job creation, emissions reduction and building resilience, and that the gains from this investment will far outweigh the cost. It is critical that job creation initiatives are also coupled with skills training to increase the likelihood of beneficiaries securing employment opportunities in the longer term. “The concept of green jobs is not only about saving the environment. The figures are a demographically representative sample proportions by age, gender, region, and race. As the Mayor of Durban, I am committed to growing a sustainable, equitable and inclusive economy. “These are the same communities prone to flooding and in need of support to become more resilient. Cities are also at the forefront of the climate emergency. The report identified improving the energy efficiency of existing and new homes, schools and workplaces as having the most significant job-creation opportunity. Most significantly, creating green jobs will have a ripple effect across people’s lives, from ensuring comfortable homes, to cleaning up the air we all breathe and making cities more resilient to future extreme weather events. Ambitious urban climate action could create and support over 1.8 million green jobs in South Africa by 2030. According to the report, investing in adaptation and nature-based solutions to tackle extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, can produce an additional 705,000 sustainable jobs across the country.

Africa's struggle with hepatitis B (Nature.com)

Liver cancer is common in West Africa. But knowledge about hepatitis B — the viral illness estimated to cause 80% of primary liver cancers globally — is rare.

The prevalence of hepatitis B is estimated to be 4–6% of the population, but the exact figure is unknown. “It will be a document that people can show to policymakers and say, this is what’s necessary to have a successful hepatitis B diagnostic and treatment programme,” Lau says. And, unlike its hepatitis C screening, which is universal, that for hepatitis B covers only pregnant women and the five million people being treated for hepatitis C. “So we’re still missing some hepatitis B cases,” says Manal El-Sayed, a paediatric haematologist and oncologist at Ain Shams University in Cairo and a member of Egypt’s national committee for viral-hepatitis control. El-Sayed says that an effective awareness campaign included giving hepatitis B vaccinations to university students studying medicine, dentistry and nursing — careers in which needle-stick injuries might be associated with increased risk of contracting the disease. A study by scientists in the United Kingdom, Gambia and Senegal, run between 2011 and 2014, was able to enrol around 2,000 people with hepatitis B in the two African countries, and gave those requiring treatment antiviral drugs. Gavi, a global public–private alliance that funds vaccination programmes in low-income countries, had looked into including hepatitis B birth-dose vaccines in 2018 under the range of jabs it supports. For such action to reach the people who need it, however, the widespread ignorance surrounding hepatitis B must be tackled head-on. Hepatitis B is also a complex disease to diagnose and treat. By comparison, in Europe and the Americas, the corresponding figures are 18–19% and 2–3%. The continent also lags behind the rest of the world in preventing hepatitis B through vaccination. In fact, low- and middle-income countries could even see more people dying of viral hepatitis by that year because of the countries’ ageing populations and lack of testing. Liver cancer is common in West Africa. But knowledge about hepatitis B — the viral illness estimated to cause 80% of primary liver cancers globally — is rare. And the number of people living with chronic hepatitis B outnumbered those receiving treatment for the condition by around 10,000 to 1.

Undersea cable market steams ahead in Africa and Middle East (ComputerWeekly.com)

Twofold capacity increase supports East Africa's digital transformation as work continues on Equiano subsea cable linking Africa to Europe.

PCCW Global said that by using Infinera’s ICE technology it can now offer network operators the ability to significantly increase capacity per fibre pair on what are described as critical Middle East and Mediterranean fibre routes. By using the GX Series Compact Modular Platform, PCCW Global is confident that it can reach individual wavelength speeds of 650Gbs, resulting in more capacity, with less hardware, and providing up to 25 terabits per fibre pair. The continent needs companies like Liquid who not only land Terabit per seconds of capacity with subsea cables but also distribute that capacity inland, enabling these countries to see the same benefits as those where the cable lands.” This places EASSy in a better position to expedite the closing of the digital divide for Africans who are increasingly dependent on cloud-based services.” By adopting a software-driven, automated approach, EASSy is said to be able to gain maximum operational proficiency and service agility while reducing OPEX. By using its latest coherent technology, Ciena said EASSy is adding intelligence and efficiency to its cable system, maximising fibre capacity and substantially reducing the transported cost per bit.

There’s a couple of singles, Wyatt gets of the mark with a tickle to third man. 5th over: England 15-1 (Wyatt 4, Knight 1)Wyatt scythes a cut shot away in the air but into the gap, just a single. We’ve been here before of course, England wobbled their way past South Africa in the semi-final at Bristol in 2017 on their way to lifting the trophy. 1st over: England 6-0 (Beaumont 5, Wyatt 1)Tammy Beaumont drives the first ball of the match for four! Wyatt then cuts away for a single and Beaumont gets away with a weird looking poke that goes wide of point. Ismail bowls a tight and fast over, she pins Beaumont on the pad and there’s a big appeal but the umpire says no dice. The sun is out and shining on Danni Wyatt at the moment. Wyatt pokes at a length ball from new bowler Masabata Klaas but the chance goes begging. DROP! Wow. Wyatt plinks a pull high on the bat and into the breeze, Marizanne Kapp diving but the ball goes through her. The game on a knife-edge. Remember the ball looping off the back of her bat and hip? Wyatt joins in with a nudge off her pads for a couple.

England 50/1 after 12 overs: Another life for Wyatt! This time Kapp seemed to misjudge the flight of this one at midwicket. England 52/2 after 13 overs: A huge phase of this match, SA need to get Sciver early and they can have a crack at the middle order. Sune Luus wants to see what her bowlers can do first up on this pitch and opts to bowl first after the toss goes her way. A sign of the pitch holding up a little bit in that over as Beaumont gets one to loop over the slip region. England 35/1 after 9 overs: Wide to Wyatt from Khaka and back-to-back cut shots for four! England 104/3 after 22 overs: The 100 has come up... England 121/3 after 25 overs: A big over that, no boundaries but England are looking to shift gears. Defending champions England rout South Africa to storm into the final (International Cricket Council)

Danni Wyatt's century and Sophie Eccletone's sensational six-wicket haul helped England book a place in the final of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022, ...

Chloe Tryon tried to heave her way out of trouble but was caught at mid-wicket by Nat Sciver. Du Preez tried a cheeky shuffle but played around it, thus all but ending any hopes South Africa had left. Since then, England have played each game as a virtual knockout and now find themselves defending the title they won in 2017. She missed the ball completely, with Dean knocking over her timber for 29. Danni Wyatt's 129 off 125 set the tone for England after they were put in to bat first. Anya Shrubsole took an incredible return catch as England celebrated a massive scalp. It was a fortuitous knock at times, with Wyatt dropped on a total of five occasions - including twice in one Ayabonga Khaka over - as she took the attack to South Africa's bowlers and put their usually reliable fielders under pressure.

What is impeding Africa's TB fight? (WHO | Regional Office for Africa)

We need to scale up TB preventive therapy. Improvement of infection control measures at all public and private health care facilities is required to prevent TB.

Finally, we need to note that TB is also a social problem. The gap between the estimated number of TB cases and the number of TB cases detected remains very wide. Although there are negative effects, we can apply some of the lessons learned in fighting COVID-19 in TB control. COVID-19 has affected TB case finding and TB linkage to care. Despite the toll of the disease, TB is not yet at the forefront of health priorities in many countries. Dr Norbert Ndjeka, Chief Director of TB Control and Management in South Africa’s National Department of health, assesses the challenges and how to accelerate progress.

Putin's isolation from Europe could usher in natural gas ... (CNBC)

With the U.S., EU and U.K. looking to phase out Russian gas imports, western leaders could look to LNG projects in sub-Saharan Africa to soften the landing.

Russia accounts for around 40% of the EU's natural gas exports, with Germany and Italy particularly exposed. "For instance, the Ukraine crisis will likely increase the attractiveness of the long-planned Nigeria LNG Train 7 that is expected to come online in 2026 and will require an additional 1,200mmcfd of gas supply from Nigerian gas projects." "An improved gas price environment could swing the balance of profitability for a number of projects in Nigeria, allowing for additional supply for existing and planned LNG projects," the report said. In a research note last week, Africa analysts at political risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft said that while the continent cannot fill the void left by Russian natural gas imports, it could help to shore up supply. The U.S. has declared a complete ban on Russian oil, gas and coal imports, while the U.K. intends to phase out Russian oil by the end of the year and the EU aims to cut its reliance on Russian imports by two-thirds. Russia and the West remain at odds over payment for natural gas exports, on which Europe, in particular, is heavily dependent, with Moscow insisting "unfriendly" countries pay for gas deliveries in Russian rubles, a demand G-7 nations have rebuffed.

Danni Wyatt ton, Sophie Ecclestone six-for help England set finals ... (ESPNcricinfo.com)

England Women 293 for 8 (Wyatt 129, Dunkley 60, Ismail 3-46) beat South Africa Women 156 all out (Du Preez 30, Ecclestone 6-36, Shrubsole 2-27) by 137 runs.

With seven wickets down inside 30 overs, even a miracle seemed unlikely to avert a second elimination at the hands of England in a World Cup knockout. England rounded out a supercharged performance with the bat with 75 runs in their final 10 overs. Wyatt leaned in and offered a thick edge to first-slip Lizelle Lee, who couldn't hold on to a low catch and the ball raced away for four. After Chloe Tryon took an agile catch running back to dismiss Jones for 28 off 32, Dunkley superbly complemented Wyatt, who reached her half-century off 56 balls and her hundred with a single off the 97th delivery of her innings. Against an opposition that consigned them to a heartbreaking loss in the semi-final in Bristol five years ago, South Africa bore the brunt of slipshod fielding. In a rematch of the
