In the wake of back-to-back defeats by heavy margins, the Phoenix vice-captain stressed the importance of looking after his younger team-mates.

Mariners eye top six after Phoenix rout (FTBL Australia)

Central Coast Mariners have moved to within a game of the A-League Men's finals places after brushing aside a free-falling Wellington Phoenix.

Kuol, younger brother of 2021-22 ALM breakout star Alou, secured a memorable maiden ALM goal in the 68th minute with an audacious flick-on from a long Miller pass and then helped launch the attack that saw Hatch complete the rout in the 93rd minute. It was then 2-0 in the 24th when a short-corner routine between N'Kololo and Josh Nisbet opened up an angle for the former to bend a shot inside the far post. After playing the through ball that induced Louis Fenton to bring down N'Kololo for a penalty, Urena netted from the spot in the eighth minute of play.

The Phoenix remain one point outside the top six in seventh with two games in hand on the two teams directly above them, but their form has taken a nosedive this week with so many players out through injury and illness. Nkololo was a handful up front for the Mariners. He won the penalty which led to the opening goal and scored the second with a wonderful strike from a short corner routine. Hatch capped off the five-star performance for the Mariners with a second chance effort in stoppage time after Sail was unable to hold onto the ball after making the initial save. The Phoenix remain one point outside the top-six with two games in hand on the two teams directly above them, and two points off third.
