Why the U.S. is sanctioning Putin's daughters over his war in Ukraine (The Washington Post)

Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova were targeted after evidence emerged of potential Russian war crimes in Bucha, Ukraine.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. The Russian investigative news outlet Proekt reported that Putin has a “secret” third daughter, a teenager whom he fathered with a lover, but the girl’s relationship with Putin has not been clearly established. (The wife and daughter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were slapped with U.S. sanctions Wednesday, along with Putin’s daughters.) His official biography published on the Kremlin website lists only the first names of his daughters: Maria, who was born in 1985, and Katerina, born in 1986. The Biden administration has said it believes that many of Putin’s personal assets are hidden with family members. Identified by the U.S. Treasury Department as Putin’s children, both women appear to work with and benefit from the Russian state apparatus.

The New White House Sanctions Against Putin's Two ... (Forbes)

The White House's April 6 announcement of sanctions against two notable Russian professionals, Katerina Tikhonova (nee Putina) and Maria Vorontsova Faassen ...

But the larger point is, as the White House sanctions descend, their father has put Dr. Faasen and her sister on the map now. Ms. Tikhonova and Mr. Shamalov were married in 2013 in a lush, albeit typically hush-hush, weekend at the spanking-new Igora ski resort, the resort especially favored by the Russian president and the one at which the formidable St. Petersburg businesswoman Svetlana Krivonogikh had, before her sudden rise to good fortune, been employed as a cleaning lady. Apparently divorced from Ms. Tikhonova a scant few years later, Putin’s former son-in-law Mr. Shamalov reportedly still owns a prime 19th-century villa in Biarritz, on France’s storied Cote Basque, which house was broken into in mid-March by French activist Pierre Haffner in protest of the war. Unlike their rumored and unacknowledged half-sister, Elizaveta (Luiza) Krivonogikh, Maria Tikhonova and Katerina Faassen have attempted to fly under the radar, surfacing only briefly here and there. Not unexpectedly, and in keeping with what we know of the remaining and staunchly loyal upper echelon in the financial and political circles with which Ms. Tikhonova’s father has surrounded himself, the younger Mr. Shamalov experienced a meteoric rise before and during his marriage to Ms. Tikhonova and became, at the ripe age of 20, Gazprom’s lead foreign-business legal beagle. As the two known, officially acknowledged daughters of Russia’s apparent strongman-for-life, Vladimir Putin, Ms. Tikhonova, a much-decorated Moscow State University academic, and Ms. Faasen, a pediatric endocrinologist married to Dutch businessman Jorrit Faassen, are understood to be very comfortably situated in their lives.

Putin's daughters sanctioned: What we know about the charmed ... (Evening Standard)

From a childhood spent in Germany to their billionaire husbands, Juliana Piskorz dives into the lives of Putin's daughters.

A year after the wedding, Putin’s great friend and Katerina’s new father-in-law, Nikolai Shamalov received a 17 per cent stake in Russia’s biggest petrochemicals company Sibur. Soon after the incident, Urin was arrested and jailed for six years, with all six of his banks declared bankrupt. Meanwhile, Maria completed a PHD in endocrinology at Moscow State University and is a co-owner of a Russian private healthcare investment company called Nomenko. Maria married Dutch businessman Jorrit Faassen in 2013, living with him in a penthouse in Voorschoten in western Holland, before moving back to Moscow in 2014. But their lives are not all work and no play, during her studies Katerina developed a passion for acrobatic rock’n’roll, an unusual form of dance involving stunts and gymnastics. Unlike his one-time supporter and political counterpart Donald Trump, Putin has worked hard to keep his offspring off the world stage, never acknowledging their existence except for telling director Oliver Stone in a 2017 interview that “they are not interested in business or politics.”

Additional sanctions are also anticipated, targeting Russian state-owned enterprises. Alfa Bank is the fourth-largest financial institution in the country.3 One potential motivation for sanctioning Putin's family members is the possibility that these individuals may hide some of the Russian president's assets. Biden said that the latest sanctions aim to "keep raising the economic cost" to "ratchet up the pain for Putin."1 The U.S. ban on Russian investments aims to "further isolate Russia from the global economy." Sberbank is the largest financial institution in Russia, holding about one-third of all of the Russian banking sector's assets. Although the ban applies to U.S. persons located anywhere in the world, it is only on new Russian investments.
