Why escalating misogynistic abuse of Jacinda Ardern is a national ... (Stuff.co.nz)

The escalation of violent gendered abuse and widespread online misogyny may represent never-before-seen threats to national security and our social fabric.

A lot of the far right see themselves as victims, and anti-feminism is a big part of that.” “The question is now for the next election, how much of this has seeped out into a broader constituency, and will there be more support for these minority anti-government parties? Groups that want to protest about the government choose to be very hostile to the PM and other female politicians, for example some of the signs we saw at Groundswell,” he says. “They imagine an idealised past, and they see feminism as part of the moral decay of western societies. “The aim of this is to silence women in office and pressure us not to be in public life. The idea that women should be mothers and caregivers, that’s their natural destiny.” There is talk of women being “succubus,” a particular kind of woman in folklore that sucks men's strength. “When people talk about ‘witchcraft,’ imagery of the Prime Minister or other women as witches, these are classic misogynistic tropes. It had been tracking the “significant increase” in anti-authority violent rhetoric seen since Covid-19 health measures and restrictions. This outright violent hatred of women which was once only found on gaming forums like 4Chan and other dark corners of the Internet then bleeds back to Facebook, Twitter and impacts mainstream political discourse. Last month, a protest attended by thousands was accompanied by incitements to “hang the b...”, and a makeshift hearse. It’s devastating when you’re trying to make an impact and see this kind of stuff.”

Here be trolls: New Zealand's female politicians battle rising tide of ... (The Guardian)

Led by Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand women are entering uncharted territory in politics – and encountering increasing levels of abuse.

She accepts that part of having a public role is facing criticism but abuse threatens the accessibility New Zealanders have to politicians. Misogyny is not just about hatred of women, it is about the control and punishment of women who are challenging male dominance, Hannah says. “There is a lot of stuff about objectifying and controlling and keeping women ‘in their place’,” she says. “We can definitively say … that between the period of, say August to November last year, the level of misogynistic targeting of women in the public eye, including MPs, increased almost day on day.” The tone is becoming “more vulgar and heightened,” Hannah says. Judge Gibson denied the defence’s request for home detention, on the basis that public officials were very much at risk of threats to their lives and the court must act accordingly.

Jacinda Ardern opens up on Covid toll - 'Sheer exhaustion' (1 News)

In an interview with TVNZ's Sunday programme, airing tonight, Jacinda Ardern opens up about the weight of leading the country during Covid.

All of my personal experience, in many ways, feels very trivial compared to that.” If we got it wrong on this side of the equation, [what were] the consequences, versus on this side… “Sometimes I would just take really long walks, thinking about the consequences.

The Ardern govt has achieved close to nothing outside of Covid (Stuff.co.nz)

The caucus will show Ardern more loyalty than she demonstrated to Louisa Wall. If there is to be a changing of the guard, the Prime Minister must elect to leave of her own volition. She remains popular and is one of the most impressive political operators we have seen, and is a master of both the parliamentary and media arenas. This government and this prime minister are tainted with a perception of incompetence. If you value hearing the opinions of others, please consider becoming a Stuff supporter. It is a mistake, however, to write off Ardern. She has not been tested in either of the last two elections. The poor now struggle to get credit, thanks to changes to the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act. The poor now have to pay more for their petrol cars, thanks to the tax on dirty petrol cars. The poor now struggle to cover the cost of groceries as prices rise faster than wages, thanks in part to changes to the mandate of the Reserve Bank away from a single focus on inflation. Money, interest and attention has now turned towards Messrs Luxon and Seymour, as there is now a sense of inevitability about a change of government. These interpreters are a curious addition to the theatre of politics. The only way a working family can now obtain a house is through inheritance. Here is my take: Outside of Covid, this administration has a terrible record. This is a problem for the Government. Ardern has been defined by the pandemic.

So in some instances I didn't take the leadership of my party because I disagreed with how they wanted to play the game." She said most people came into Parliament wanting to be a minister "and the way you do that is to be part of the team and work diligently. Wall will deliver her valedictory speech on Thursday, before Parliament breaks for Easter and a recess period. "I will fight for the right to do that in a way that takes the majority of people with us. "I can understand how people in leadership would have thought that I haven't been as responsive to their requests as I could have been. Again, you're going to have ask her about why she thought there was no place for someone like me in the Labour Party caucus."

Members of the New Zealand Defence Force and police force were among the groups that lost workers over the vaccine rule, with many claiming religious or personal exemption but still subject to suspension. In February, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was advised by a High Court ruling that her rigid COVID restrictions were a “gross violation of human rights” after workers were denied a right to work over skipping the vaccine. By April, New Zealand lifted its vaccine mandate and urged its unvaccinated workforce, who “have given decades of service to their community,” to return to duty — previously suspended for their personal health decision.
