Mykolenko throws himself at it to block. He finds Wan-Bissaka who takes it on his chest before letting fly. The away side cross it in from the right and find their main man. I made my own luck with a bit of hard work. It was about sticking together and riding the storm, and we managed to do that. “We came into it with a good game plan. I don’t know what to say, to be honest. “We had to do something. “We had a good start and should have created more chances out of that domination. You might give a ball away but the only way to get that back is to fly in and make a tackle. We are getting clean sheets at home. At Goodison we have been good.

The 21-year-old's deflected effort sealed a crucial three points for Frank Lampard's side and condemned top-four chasing United to a damaging defeat.

“But they played on Wednesday, they were tired, a bit nervous you could feel it and even with that we lost the game. On United’s diminishing top-four hopes, he added: “We have spoken about that quite a few times and depending on other results. “We shouldn’t be distracted by that. The club has been strongly linked with a move for Ajax manager Erik ten Hag ahead of the new season. Honestly it’s a massive relief for the fans, players, management team and everyone associated with Everton.” A lively start almost yielded two goals with Pickford twice called into action to prevent United’s No 10 from opening the scoring. “When he’s played, he’s been out of position and not played as much as he wants under this manager.” - Elanga – 6 - Rashford – 6 Rashford was taken off soon after with Rangnick introducing Anthony Elanga in his place. David De Gea, who was powerless to prevent Everton’s opener, made a superb stop to deny them a second, acrobatically tipping a dipping Richarlison shot that had taken a nick off Maguire over the crossbar. Just as the first audible groans drifted down to the pitch from the stands, Everton went in front.

Everton 1-0 Manchester United: Premier League – as it happened (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game to help Everton win three precious points against clueless, mightily obligin ...

49 min: Pickford gets caught in no-man’s land as Rashford runs on to a ball over the top into the Everton penalty area. 33 min: Manchester United defend with a high line, the ball is curled in by Gordon and Maguire half-clears. 68 min: Paul Pogba is penalised for bundling Dominic Calvert-Lewin off the ball. The outfit from Old Trafford are a shambles and no mistake. He pulls the ball back into the penalty area, trying to tee up Richarlison or Calvert-Lewin. Aaron Wan-Bissaka clears. They’re showing plenty of character today and the Goodison Park crowd appreciate their efforts ... for now. It was good to do that today, but I don’t think I’ll train for a week!” On the result: “Coming off the back of the last game there was a lot of disappointment,” he tells BT Sport’s Des Kelly. “Heads were down, as you’d expect. On his own performance and fitness: “It was good for me to get out there. On Frank Lampard’s half-time talk: “He said just to stay in the game. Away from home is a different aspect but when we come together, fans and players alike, then we’re hard to beat here. On United’s lack of ideas: “It’s not only creativity,” he says in an interview with the BBC. “I think we had enough creative payers on the pitch.

Match report and free highlights as Anthony Gordon's deflected strike seals a vital three points for Everton in their quest ... (Sky Sports)

Everton breathed life into their hopes of Premier League survival - and dented Manchester United's Champions League aspirations further - as Anthony Gordon's deflected strike secured a 1-0 home win at a raucous Goodison Park.

They are a top team with top players at the front end of the pitch so we did really well to keep a clean sheet. I made my own luck with a bit of hard work. By contrast, Goodison Park hosted a festival of the doomed involving two clubs in desperate need of a reset. This was a step in the right direction. This high-stakes clash was the polar opposite to the encounter between Liverpool and Manchester's other club this weekend. I think we had enough creative players on the pitch. We should have got a result in the week but didn't. You have to keep going. Then we concede a deflected shot and lost a bit of our composure. We didn't find the right player at the right moment. You might give a ball away but the only way to get that back is to fly in and make a tackle. Everton would see out the half, and Pogba's first contribution was to hack at Everton's goalscorer Gordon right in front of referee Jon Moss to be cautioned. Ronaldo missed last weekend's 1-1 draw against Leicester because of illness while Rashford was among the substitutes but both forwards came back in as Ralf Rangnick made six changes to his starting XI.

Everton player ratings following the vital 1-0 victory in the Premier League against Manchester United at Goodison Park.

This was arguably his best performance since arriving at the club - full of skill, strength, desire, pace and attacking intent. He was everywhere Everton needed him to be throughout his time on the pitch and proved exactly why so many fans were placing such importance on his return to fitness. A few nervy moments dominated his first half, with sloppy passes almost allowing United the chances they need to find the back of the net.

Force United to buildup through the middle with McTominay and take advantage of the fact that he literally can’t do that. Look, I know Frank Lampard is actually bad and expecting him to capitalize on anything is foolish but here’s the funny thing. If you talked to me in November I would have told you that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 100% had to go, but no replacement was going to come in and be successful with this squad. I’ve never seen a midfielder with less spatial awareness than the Scot. If McTominay is “marking you” all you have to do to get free is casually walk away. He’ll only be able to bring as much as the club stays patient with him. Already were seeing people say Mauricio Pochettino would have been a better fit or people questioning if Ten Hag can handle the Premier League. Some are shouting just for attention, others for clicks (and £££), so it can be hard to tell who’s serious and who’s an idiot (spoiler alert: we’re all idiots). Ten Hag can only bring what the club allows him to bring. David de Gea refusing to come off his line or be able to play with his feet has severely hurt the team as well. Of course, as soon as that happened Ronaldo went through one of the biggest dry spells of the year, which was incredibly problematic for a team that was becoming increasingly reliant on Ronaldo. It is hard to say, with the team struggling at Burnley, it seems difficult to envision the Blues turning it around so quickly against a top-six opponent, but this is no regular big opponent either. Cristiano Ronaldo was never a good fit for a team that wasn’t built around a static #9 so his arrival was always going to change things. If you want to talk about the top four race I’d suggest reaching out to an Arsenal or Tottenham fan (or maybe a West Ham supporter).

Man United player ratings vs Everton: Ronaldo and Sancho poor (Manchester Evening News)

How the Man Utd player ratings in their 1-0 defeat to Frank Lampard's side on Saturday.

The second-half was maybe quieter and his frustration got the better of him when he was booked for punting the ball. Had no visible impact on the midfield and came off after the hour. The odd corner was okay but Telles looked like what he is - a squad player.
