'His head is gone': Unflappable Smith finally loses it as notorious Masters hole claims latest victim.

He continued to struggle on the ensuing holes and uncharacteristically showed signs of frustation, smashing his club into the ground at one point. Tiger Woods made a 10 on the hole in 2022. The world No.6 put his tee shot at the par-3 into Rae’s Creek, then mis-hit his third shot and two-putted to a devastating triple bogey.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — You could hear the entire continent of Australia groan as Cameron Smith's tee shot on No. 12 splashed into Rae's Creek during the final round ...

To the Aussie's credit, he eventually bounced back with back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 on his way to a T-3 finish. Even more so after Smith birdied the first two holes on Sunday as the final pairing distanced itself from the rest of the field. That's because as the Action Network's Darren Rovell reported earlier on Sunday, someone had bet on Smith and Scottie Scheffler to finish 1-2 at Augusta National this week.

It really doesn't get any better than that. Just about a tap in. He finds the green and keeps it on the right level. He is a truly great golfer, one of the very best in the world. Smith birdied the first two to pull within a shot of Scheffler, only for Scottie to chip in for birdie at the third to flip the script straight back. He's not the first, he certainly won't be the last. A couple of lucky breaks here and there and I'm sure I'll be putting the green jacket on one day. It was a perfect nine iron, and just a really bad swing. It's emotional just getting into this field, so to win is so special for all of them. Thank you so much for your company this morning. By Dean Bilton But the 12th, as it has so many times in Masters history, was decisive.

In the span of 20 minutes, what looked potentially doable quickly morphed first to doubtful, then impossible. An opening 39 on Friday led to a 2-over 74, leaving him six shots off Scheffler's pace. Clearly rattled, the player known for his mullet haircut seemed to let his anger get ahold of him. He calmly drained a 15-foot birdie on the difficult par-4 11th to move to three shots behind. The treacherous 12th is where countless hopes of victories at Augusta National have gone to die. The Brisbane-born Smith said he had hoped the folks back home would wake around 5 a.m. to watch him take aim at tracking down Scheffler. The early returns provided those who tuned in with a noncaffeinated jolt.

Just unfortunate, but I’ll grow from this and be stronger for it.” As Scheffler and Smith started the back nine, an ominous warning sounded as a mighty roar rolled across Augusta National after McIlroy carded an eagle at the 13th to get to six-under for the tournament. “It’s just a really bad swing,” Smith said.

I feel like it's a place that really suits my game. A dejected Smith was never the same over the closing holes, as he finished up with a 1-over round of 73 that left him four shots from the lead in a tie for third place with Ireland's Shane Lowry. The 28-year-old was within three shots of the lead after a birdie on 11, and he turned up at the famous 140-metre par-three 12th and decided to go for it.

Cameron Smith is one of the Tour's best putters. But the changes he's made off the course have been equally key to his success.

“I lost a little bit of weight and my body moves a little bit quicker when I don’t have so much around my belly.” It started with a three-month offseason workout routine. It helped him gain about 10 yards per drive (from a 286 average to 297 yards).

Cameron Smith's hopes of winning his first major vanished on the 12th hole during the final round of the Masters.

Just don't expect the avid rugby fan and occasional fisherman to get consumed by it. He calmly drained a 15-foot birdie on the difficult par-4 11th to move to three shots behind. An opening 39 on Friday led to a 2-over 74, leaving him six shots off Scheffler's pace. In the span of 20 minutes, what looked potentially doable quickly morphed first to doubtful, then impossible. A 'glaring weakness' saw Smith 'crash and burn'. What he does next could terrify rivals.

The commitment to that shot was not a good one. “That’s not a small deficiency when you play Augusta. “I feel really comfortably around this place. “It was all fine,” he said. Not his heart.” “We saw it at Sawgrass and he recovered from them. Only your money wouldn’t have been on Smith to capitulate with a short iron in hand. Smith still has the potential to become a giant of the game, with his short game already the envy of many of his rivals. “It was his worst swing of the day by far and it cost him the chance to go down the stretch with Scheffler. “And as much as he was trying to take it on, he knew it wasn’t the right thing to do. Ian Baker-Finch suggested in commentary that Smith might “hit a little eight-iron to the middle of the green” next time on the 12th. “The cavalier way that he plays the game, the swashbuckling way, is going to leave himself prone and open to a lot of mistakes,” McGinley said.
