Chelsea FC sale: Terry-backed fans' group endorses Pagliuca ... (Sky News)

The True Blues Consortium has told Sky News that the consortium which features the NBA chairman Larry Tanenbaum is “aligned” with the interests of Chelsea ...

Prior to being sanctioned, Mr Abramovich had said he intended to write off a £1.5bn loan to the club and hand the net proceeds from the sale to a new charity that he would set up to benefit the victims of the war in Ukraine. Mr Abramovich had initially slapped a £3bn price tag on the Stamford Bridge outfit, with the net proceeds being donated to a charitable foundation set up to benefit the victims of the war in Ukraine. The Premier League is expected to take the remainder of this month to evaluate those involved in the bids - who include a string of US billionaires and pillars of the British corporate establishment - and its work to approve all four consortia means the process may need to be extended. The issue of supporter ownership is a sensitive one because the government is due to respond in the coming weeks to the former sports minister Tracy Crouch's review of football club ownership and governance. In a statement, the True Blues Consortium said: "Having engaged and being well received by all the bidders we were recently able to spend some time with Steve and Larry and getting to know their bid we're again confident that they are aligned with Chelsea fans, and of course have experience in this area of owning sports teams. The True Blues group is being co-ordinated by Sandford Loudon, a sports industry financier and long-standing Blues fan, and has held talks with all four of the shortlisted bidders.

Boston Celtics owner Stephen Pagliuca said NBA chairman Larry Tanenbaum and ex-Chelsea captain John Terry have joined his bid to purchase the club.

"This process has been a disconcerting time for the football club and fans," he said. Pagliuca spoke publicly for the first time about his bid for Chelsea on Monday, when he vowed to make the club "habitual winners." "The group welcomes the endorsement and support of the True Blues Consortium, an organisation dedicated to Chelsea FC and focused on representing fan interests for the club," said the statement.

Whatever happens next at Chelsea, there is a clear priority: keep ... (The Guardian)

Despite relinquishing his European crown the manic German has shown masterful leadership of his squad and troubled club.

Like Mauricio Pochettino, his best moments are always likely to come from driving on a team of biddable energetic players at a level just below the outright superstars. Tuchel is a coach not an impresario, the kind of high-functioning obsessive who will flourish in the right soil. Tuchel may be a more ludic and compelling tactician than Carlo Ancelotti. But can anyone really imagine him digging out the same results in charge of Real Madrid? Or succeeding at any of those clubs where saying less is saying more, where intense, non-negotiable tactical detail is essentially an act of self-sabotage? Tuchel was a success at Borussia Dortmund, but he left under a cloud, subject of a casual character assassination by the CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, who questioned his “basic values”, from communication skills to loyalty and trust. With a day’s grace, and even in agreeably bad-tempered defeat, the image of Tuchel buried inside that circle seems to capture something vital. He remains in his own Imperial phase, revered by the club’s support and right under the skin of this group of players.

The Chelsea supporters are filtering into the stadium to the right of me. Only a few hundred so far and they've not been able to make themselves heard over the PA system. Up in the gods at the Bernabeu, Chelsea's travelling supporters are beginning to find their voice. We want to have more players closer to the ball in the attack. Of course we will try to get a lead to get it into their minds and cause some doubts. We want to play with a higher press, a higher line with pressing against the ball. Even if it’s the other way around, we will try and keep on trying. The Chelsea head coach may have tried to play down his side's chances but you can tell he believes something can happen tonight. Reece James trips over Vinicius who shows incredible acceleration to go past the Chelsea star. Looks like Loftus-Cheek is playing pretty central and then moving wider at the moment. He will again be key to Chelsea's hopes of recovering something from this tie, scoring six goals in his last seven. Timo Werner and Mason Mount hit a double as Marcos Alonso, and Kai Havertz rounded out the scoring.

In the context of the away goals rule change, that approach was even more strange. That said, Karim Benzema was in the same situation when he tormented Chelsea at Stamford Bridge just a week ago. It is an attribute far easier to establish than re-establish and far easier to cede than regain. But Real were complicit in that surrender of control. That still left two centre-backs to deal with Benzema. Real Madrid ceded their inherited power through a misguided strategy of sticking with what they had.

Yet Benzema, the first-leg hero who went dormant for long stretches of the second leg, brought the Bernabéu to its feet with his extra-time goal in the 96th minute. And yet it was Chelsea who were thwarted most grievously when Alonso got a second bite at his chance off Dani Carvajal and lashed into the far corner. Rüdiger screamed into the night sky as if unable to comprehend that the club’s defence of their title had ended before he slumped to the turf and he was not the only one. He was frequently one-on-one with James and there was a moment early on when he tricked past him to buy a free-kick and a yellow card for his marker. No risk, no reward which James epitomised, playing with a fearlessness despite his booking, not to mention power in the duels. When Vinícius Júnior stood up a cross from the left, Karim Benzema melted away from Rüdiger and the Chelsea defender could only turn in horror, slipping as he did so, powerless to prevent what was coming. Benzema headed against the crossbar next and then there was Werner, jinking inside and sending Casemiro, David Alaba and Carvajal off towards the Santiago Bernabéu metro station before seeing his shot come off Courtois’s glove and spin into the far corner. On a night that will live long in the memories of everyone present, Tuchel set up boldly and was rewarded for his enterprise, his team starting brightly and getting better and better. The drama was remorseless until the end, the passions swirling, the intensity overwhelming. The problem was that Real Madrid were not finished. They refused to wallow when, two goals to the good thanks to Mason Mount and Antonio Rüdiger, they were cruelly denied by a VAR overrule after Marcos Alonso thought he had made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute. The greatest comeback result in the club’s history was on. Even then, Chelsea might have pinched it after the 90 minutes were up.

Ganis adds that all four bids bring unique experiences from other industries on top of their sports ownership, not to mention a track record of empowering the right people and avoiding micromanagement. The family also shared its vision for the club by presenting an eight-point plan to Chelsea fans that pledges to “put diversity and inclusion at the heart of the club and fight against any form of discrimination or inequality.” (Stamford Bridge is owned by the nonprofit Chelsea Pitch Owners, which granted the club a 199-year lease at a nominal rate.) An all-equity deal would mean Chelsea wouldn’t be constricted by debt-service payments or have to worry about finding funds to invest in Stamford Bridge and the club’s star-studded roster. Chelsea has been a money-losing enterprise for some time now, so much so that Abramovich has had to shell out roughly $2 billion in personal loans since buying the club for $190 million in 2003 to keep things afloat. The bidding is expected to close on April 18 when Raine Group, the advisor on the transaction, will present a single offer to the Premier League and the U.K. government.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said of his team's Champions League quarterfinal exit: "We are very disappointed and very proud at the same time."

Tuchel had warned in the build-up that Real had a physical advantage owing to LaLiga's use of five substitutions compared with the Premier League's three, and perhaps that contributed to one or two tired passes creeping into their play. Antonio Rudiger headed Mount's 51st-minute corner into the net to haul Chelsea level on aggregate, and when Marcus Alonso thrashed a shot past Courtois just after the hour mark, they were ahead in the tie. Mateo Kovacic slipped a 75th-minute pass through for Timo Werner, who cut inside on his right foot and steered a shot Courtois could only divert into the far corner. Chelsea amassed 28 shots on the night, earning a 3-0 lead at one stage as they pinned Real back in their own half with a mixture of intelligent pressing, midfield control and tireless mental fortitude. Chelsea's epic Champions League comeback falls short as Madrid claim 'instant classic'. Modric ...

The English side take a 3-1 lead into Wednesday’s second leg at Anfield. Luka Modric was enraged when the referee claimed the shot had been deflected off his boot – and Madrid soon became even more unhappy when Mount’s resulting cross found an unmarked Antonio Rudiger who made no mistake with the cross. He patiently dummied a defender before unleashing a shot under Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois. In extra time, 34-year-old Frenchman Benzema struck his 38th goal of the season - and his 12th in the Champions League this campaign - when he was found unmarked ten yards from the goal from a brilliantly chipped Vinicius Jnr cross and powered his header home. In an engrossing clash, Mount added his name to the assist column in the 51st minute after Chelsea were wrongly awarded a corner when a Reece James strike from the edge of the box went wide of the goal. After a quarter of an hour, Timo Werner flicked the ball to Mount on the edge of the area, with the England international controlling the ball well before finishing with aplomb.

Into extra time and Madrid found another gear, Vinicius finally finding space to tear into. VAR spotted Alonso had controlled with his hand and when the decision was reversed, the Bernabeu erupted. But Chelsea were celebrating a third when Marcos Alonso pivoted round Dani Carvajal’s sliding tackle and slammed into the top corner. Benzema, Modric and Toni Kroos tried to wrestle back control but Chelsea’s authority was even more pronounced early in the second half and within minutes they had a second, Rudiger rising high at the back post to head in from a corner. But the 36-year-old Modric intervened with another moment of genius to add to the very best of his glittering career, a sumptuous pass with the outside of his right foot setting up Rodrygo to volley in and sending a nerve-shredding contest into extra time.

Real Madrid Ends Chelsea's Champions League Reign With a ... (Sports Illustrated)

After an instant classic at the Bernabéu, it's Real Madrid that's going through, while Chelsea is left to confront its uncertain future.

The introduction of Eduardo Camavinga, as it had against Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round, allowed Madrid to compete more in midfield. Madrid had been reeling for five minutes before Antonio Rüdiger headed in a right-wing corner, his first ever goal in the Champions League coming at a vital time. There was perhaps an element of fortune in the kneed volley that laid Mason Mount in to sweep the first goal beyond Thibaut Courtois after 15 minutes, but if any Chelsea player was due some good fortune it was Timo Werner, scorer of the 75th-minute goal that gave Chelsea a 3–0 lead on the day and 4–3 edge on aggregate and he who delivered the assist on the opener. Either way, there was a reaction on Saturday with the 6–0 win league over Southampton. It continued Tuesday. This was a much sharper, more aggressive Chelsea, and Madrid struggled to deal with it. But on a night of collapses and comebacks in the Spanish capital, Real Madrid, as it is known to do on the European stage, found the necessary resolve and the necessary goals just when it needed them. Chelsea’s press, reconstituted after a shaky week, successful stifled Madrid until it got level in the tie, at which point Madrid at last began to play.

"But it was not meant to be." At full time, James was one of the players to collapse to the ground. But if you play Real Madrid, you cannot expect that everyone has the courage [to make decisions]. I also felt the little decisions in the first leg and the second leg today," Tuchel said on the refereeing decisions across the two legs in his press conference." Our David Ornstein reported on Monday that the scrum of top sides gathering to register an interest has been streamlined slightly, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain the leading contenders to sign him. A club statement read: "Our player Eden Hazard will undergo surgery in the next few days to remove the osteosynthesis plate on his right fibula." Mount, 23, was back to his very best in the Santiago Bernabeu and only took 15 minutes to carry on his renewed form from the weekend's win against Southampton as he finished expertly across Thibaut Courtois after a Timo Werner ricochet fell his way nicely. A club statement read: "Our player Eden Hazard will undergo surgery in the next few days to remove the osteosynthesis plate on his right fibula." The Portuguese club wants him to leave early in the summer transfer window, so they have plenty of time to find a replacement. As brutal and harsh and coarse as it might seem after such a valiant effort from Chelsea that saw them on the cusp of a legendary Champions League comeback, certain truths after to be acknowledged. Perhaps not directly to a group of players left demoralised, exhausted and in disbelief on a pitch in the Spanish capital, but as an elite set-up striving for the best. Pagliuca has reportedly added others to his star-studded group of bidders. Immortalized by Andrew Garfield’s portrayal in the Academy Award-winning film The Social Network, Saverin rose to prominence after cofounding Facebook (now called Meta) with Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. If Pagliuca were to succeed in acquiring Chelsea, he would have to divest his Atalanta stake, since individuals cannot own multiple UEFA Champions League competitors.
