Coachella 2020 was one of the first large-scale live events to fall prey to COVID-19, but two years later the pandemic hardly seemed to leave a mark on the festival. And a set by film composer Danny Elfman — shirtless and extremely ripped at age 68 — featured his deathless theme from “The Simpsons.” But even youngsters were looking back to the decade: Phoebe Bridgers played hushed emo-folk with strong echoes of Elliott Smith, while Beabadoobee expertly channeled the sweet-and-sour fuzz-pop of Veruca Salt and Velocity Girl. Arcade Fire was there (with only a day’s notice) to play tunes from an LP it has coming next month; Swedish House Mafia performed two days after the release of its latest album. The intense media coverage of Coachella has always made it a useful launching pad for acts with new projects to promote, and that seemed especially true this year thanks to pent-up demand. But in its two decades, the much-scrutinized fest has accumulated a sense of cultural importance that means what happens at Coachella tends not to stay at Coachella. Here are five takeaways from Weekend 1: Given the two years of repeated postponements and cancellations that got us here, it wasn’t surprising to see how pumped people were to be back at this most storied of music festivals.

After the performance that had everyone talking, Shania posted this recap of the special night on Instagram with the caption, "Music icon. After a duet with rockstar Harry for "Man! I Feel Like a Woman," the two later went on to perform a rendition of Shania's "You're Still the One," but only after Harry admitted how big of an influence the Canadian icon was for him when growing up. A fan at the festival captured the moment on TikTok and fans went berserk as soon as they heard, "Let's go, girls!"

It’s a mood that continues for the final act of the weekend – or at least when Swedish House Mafia eventually make it on stage 35 minutes late. A lengthy outfit change filled by DJ Jay Bone dampens the excitement for her performance somewhat, taking her back to square one even with the likes of ‘Body’ and ‘Hot Girl Summer’ in her arsenal. Though their set is full of brilliant highs (particularly a party and pit-starting ‘Boogie’), it ends anti-climactically, with the group trudging out of sight unceremoniously. When Shania Twain appears at the top of a white staircase as Styles’ band bashes out the opening notes of ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman’, the crowd is momentarily stunned before embracing the seemingly random cameo and belting out the lyrics to the hit. “It’s been a pretty fucked up last couple of years and I can’t say enough how beautiful it is to see you all,” frontman Win Butler gushes, moments later getting so caught up in emotion that he has to restart the band’s preview of fresh cut ‘Unconditional (Lookout Kid)’. Over at the Outdoor Theatre, Omar Apollo is getting into the party spirit under the late afternoon sun, pairing some sensual slow jams and tender sad songs with hyped up shout outs to the crowd.
