Arsenal player ratings vs Manchester United as Granit Xhaka scores stunning goal as Gunners claim 3-1 Premier League win in top four hunt.
Nuno Tavares (LB) – 3/10 – Showed willingness to charge up and down the left flank and that enthusiasm got him his goal, although the rest of his shooting was horrific. Cedric (RB) – 3/10 – The quality of crosses on show from Cedric was horrendous. He was all over the place. Aaron Ramsdale (GK) – 5/10 – The goalkeeper had a shocker. On the ball he did OK in the shorter passes, but going long he lacked the accuracy. That goal was vitally important for the Gunners, who then coasted through to secure a massive three points when it looked so unlikely.
Arsenal's chaotic 3-1 victory over Manchester United underlined why the clubs vying for fourth place in the Premier League need it so desperately.
"But again, this is why we have a VAR, and you should expect if the referee plus the VAR check, they should in the end take the right decision. We were at least unlucky, but again, we have to get better at defending the box. If he is to be the focal point of a new United side, the 27-year-old has to find more efficiency in his play than this. "My belief is that we are going to give it a real go; we can win football matches, but the margins are going to be really small and we have to be very aware of that," Arteta said postmatch. But Fernandes was so wasteful in open play that the worst thing he could have done was turn his penalty into a pass, rolling the ball against Ramsdale's right-hand post. Neither team can be relied upon for any consistency if they continue to defend like this and yet, back-to-back wins -- following three consecutive defeats -- elevated Arsenal into fourth place ahead of Tottenham's trip to Brentford later in the day.
LONDON -- Granit Xhaka fired Arsenal into the Premier League's top four as Arsenal emerged 3-1 victors in a pulsating, dramatic and error-strewn clash with ...
Nuno is on hand to pounce on the rebound. Catastrophic defending from United, Xhaka pinging in a cross from the left that both Varane and Telles contrive to miss. Cedric loses possession on the right and United work it through Ronaldo and Fernandes to Dalot, who lets fly with a shot that dips late on and cannons back off Ramsdale's bar. A 100th Premier League goal for Ronaldo, who just bullies his way past Gabriel and Nuno to clip the ball into the net. That's better from the hosts, Elneny striking a forward pass to Odegaard, who has the space and time to turn and slip through Nketiah, onside because Dalot has switched off. He slips in Saka, who goes down under a challenge by Telles. That only serves to tee up Nketiah to roll the ball in. Arsenal spread the play out to him on the left and he is delicacy personified as he cuts infield past Dalot. He has options available to him but absolutely leathers the ball high and wide, wasting a prime attacking position. Fernandes sends Ramsdale to his feet and rolls the ball in the other direction... That is headed up in the air to Saka, who sees two shots blocked by the mass of bodies. If Telles was a liability for United, it was nothing compared to Nuno at the other end. Into the second half momentum seemed to be irresistibly on United's side, the Arsenal backline terrified by the sight of Ronaldo and Sancho engaging pressing mode. Those two combined to tee up an offside Nketiah to slot home the second but VAR quickly established that Telles had barged into Saka, who would go on to score his second penalty of the week.

It made it through to Saka on the right. Arsenal work the ball down the left and find Nuno Tavares breaking into the left side of the area. Arsenal have been the stronger side towards the end of the first half, but you wouldn't bet against United exposing Arsenal on the break. Ramsdale dives to his left, Fernandes hits the ball in the opposite direction. They have a man over, and Dalot is played in on the right. It comes to nothing as McTominay looks to combine in the Arsenal area. Arsenal want a handball, but nothing is given as Arsenal regain possession on the edge of the area. Saka is able to walk off, and gets a good reception as he leaves the pitch on the far side, and walks round the pitch to return to the dugout. If this week is anything to go by, Saka will be key to Arsenal finishing in the top four. Arsenal saw out the final twenty minutes without too many concerns, keeping the ball well and frustrating United. The return of Tomiyasu in the latter stages will have been a welcome sight. Ronaldo did well to get on the end of a Matic cross at the far post, finding room between Gabriel and Nuno Tavares. He went in the opposite direction to De Gea, and doubled Arsenal's lead.
