Hurricanes pull off comeback victory over Reds (Rugby.com.au)

The Hurricanes will look to continue the run of success for New Zealand teams in Super Round as they face the Queensland Reds.

The dominant start was capped off with a great effort by the forwards to convert the rolling maul from close, Fraser McReight the benefactor as they took the 17-0 lead. The hosts struggled with discipline to start the game as they saw two players sent for ten with Bailyn Sullivan and Pouri Rakete-Stonesyellow carded for dangerous tackles. The visitors got off to a flying start as Hamish Stewart and Fraser McReight found the line.

Hurricanes come back from 17 points down to tip over Reds (RugbyPass)

The Queensland Reds saw a Super Rugby Pacific victory go up in smoke after blowing an early lead to crash to a painful 30-17 defeat to the Hurricanes.

With their tireless skipper Ardie Savea urging his team on prop Lomax was in again just a minute into the second half as the Hurricanes took the lead for the first time. But momentum shifted in the 36th minute after the Reds failed to play to the whistle, when an intercept attempt by Hurricanes winger Julian Savea was ruled to have gone backwards and was scooped up by Sullivan who raced to the line unchallenged. McReight’s five-pointer came while Rakete-Stones was on the sidelines, with the livewire flanker popping out of a maul to score.

They were up for it but just not able to sustain it. I was proud of the first half but we were a different side after the break and that's really disappointing." If you give the Hurricanes that much possession you're asking for trouble.

Reds player ratings vs Hurricanes | Super Rugby Pacific (RugbyPass)

The Reds have surrendered a 17-point lead to go down 30-17 to the Hurricanes in Melbourne on Saturday evening. Who were the top performers in the match?

Off in 72nd minute. Off in 74th minute. Made the second-most metres of any player on the field. Off in 63rd minute. Off in 61st minute but joined the game again with a couple of minutes left on the clock. The Reds’ attack dropped a notched when he was off the field. Carted the ball up 17 times – the most of any player on the field. Did nab a breakdown penalty to shut down one Hurricanes skirmish in the second half as well as a turnover in the final 10 minutes but the net performance at the breakdown was not great. Nabbed one lineout steal in the first half but otherwise contributed little on either attack or defence. Looked for the offload when it was on to keep the ball alive. Made one great run in the midfield in the first stanza and was generally hard to bring down on the carry in the second while also chalking up 14 tackles. Missed the tackle on Jordie Barrett at the beginning of the second half that gave the Hurricanes the momentum needed for their third try.

Super Rugby Pacific: Hurricanes 30 Reds 17 in stunning comeback ... (Stuff.co.nz)

After trailing 17-0, Canes rattle up 30 unanswered points to get their trans-Tasman sojourn off to a flying start.

Who else but Ardie Savea. Another stellar performance to haul his side up, heavily involved on attack and his usual menacing self on defence and at the breakdown. Like elite athletes at their peak, our sports journalists are highly trained in the art of news. 6.5/10. For dramatic ebbs and flows it was a gripping contest, with both sides taking turns to look a million dollars then borderline inept. So we're asking you to support us with more than your attention. But it turned on some good fortune as Sullivan scored from long range after a Reds attack broke down and Lomax bulldozed over either side of halftime. Flanker Connor Vest also saw yellow after a swinging arm to Savea’s jaw.

The Hurricanes shook off an ugly first half an hour of play to pick up their fifth win of the season, toppling the Reds 30-17 at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

Made sure to impose himself with what action came his way by bouncing off defenders, but all in all it was a quiet evening from the outside backs. Returned to the action with a big piece of defence before coming up with a game-changing score off a deflection. Was on track to do more talking than passing before his team finally got their hands on the pill at the back end of the opening 40. Went sniffing for chances off his wing, but only ended up as a cleaner at the ensuing breakdown Did his job in the scrums and made all his tackles before departing for Numia with 20 to go. Would be nice to see his partnership with Sullivan given some more time to develop. Let the experience around him do their thing while he continues to get a feel for play at this level. Hard to be too critical of the rake with it only being his third outing. Outside of burrowing over for crucial tries before and after the halftime break, the tighthead delivered on his core assignments. There wasn’t the same explosiveness as we have seen in recent weeks despite the leg drive staying the same, but you’d be right in guessing he came up with timely turnovers and robust defence. Churned out some hard-fought yards (31 metres) on his six carries and got himself acquainted with the Reds’ ball runners with 19 tackles. The result wasn’t all down to them though, as the host’s ill discipline and shoddy handling saw numerous opportunities go down the gurgler.
