Covid-19: Health experts call for more variant testing as XE enters ... (Stuff.co.nz)

Most Covid cases are Omicron, but this will change as new strains emerge - epidemiologists say more genome sequencing will help us keep track.

However, rates for Māori and Pasifika are still lower than the general population, at 56.8% and 59.2% respectively. “In New Zealand we still have many people infected and unvaccinated... “We have to go back to what the purpose of testing is. “Sequencing can be used as an investigation tool to work out patterns of transmission. At the moment Baker said there were more than 4000 people entering the country each day, mainly from Australia, but this number could increase to more than 20,000 a day in coming months. Baker said this was how the first case of the XE variant was detected, and he wanted to see more PCR tests administered.

Covid-19 XE variant: Vaccination remains best defence ... (RNZ)

An epidemiologist says it is still unclear whether the new Covid-19 variant is more transmissible than Omicron.

Baker said he is shocked at the low uptake of vaccination in children and is encouraging parents to get their children vaccinated When the variant first emerged, Dr David Welch of the University of Auckland said that the XE variant is a "recombinant" which meant that someone had initially been infected by two variants of Covid, in this case BA.1 and BA.2 at the same time. Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield earlier this month said early studies of the variant, showed it to be more transmissible than Omicron but said its severity is still to be determined.

A second wave of Omicron may be under way in New Zealand - expert.

Yesterday 7930 new cases of Covid-19 in the community and 19 new deaths were announced - including two children aged under 9 and a person in their 20s. The subvariant, first identified in the United Kingdom in January and a hybrid of the original Omicron subtype BA.1 and the faster-spreading, now-dominant BA.2, was detected in a traveller who arrived in New Zealand on April 19. "I think we may be reaching a plateau [of case numbers] and we may be seeing the beginning of a second wave in New Zealand." The person was tested the next day and was isolating at home, the Ministry of Health said. There are now 59,018 of active cases in the community and there has been 881,481 in total in New Zealand since the start of the pandemic. The announcement will follow reports yesterday of the new Omicron XE subvariant arriving, and the deaths of 19 people including two children. Officials yesterday announced the first case of the XE subvariant had been detected in New Zealand. The University of Otago epidemiologist said XE and other sub-variants had potential to help fuel a new Omicron surge. Of the nine people who have died one was in their 50s, one in their 60s, one in their 70s, one in their 80s and five people were over 90. Today's seven-day rolling average is 8435, and the seven-day rolling average of cases as at last Sunday was 8170. There are 5662 new cases of Covid-19 in the community today and nine people have died with the virus. Public health settings in place to manage Omicron are also appropriate for the management of the new variant, they said.

Dr Manav Manchanda of Asian Hospital also believes that the country is witnessing the rise of Covid-19 as part of the possible fourth wave. Doctors say that although the XE variant is highly transmissible like its predecessor, the Delta and Omicron variants, this new variant is mild and may not be fatal as it just impacts the upper tracts of the lungs, unlike the Delta which infects the entire lungs leading to pneumonia and serious lung impairment. The Union Health Ministry has also recently opened booster dose for all adults in India with a gap of nine months, in order to provide better immunity to the Indian population. Its symptoms are the same as of the earlier variants of Covid-19, including irritation in throat that could lead to coughing besides fever, tiredness and exhaustion. However, doctors and scientists say that the rise could be due to the laxity in Covid-19 inappropriate behaviour. This new XE variant is a combination of the sub-variants of corona virus that was discovered in South Africa. It first surfaced in Gujarat and Maharashtra in India. The symptoms of the new XE variant are the same as Covid-19 which include fever, cough, and tiredness, say experts.

Second Omicron wave may have begun - expert (New Zealand Herald)

A second wave of Omicron may be under way in New Zealand with deaths of five to 15 people a day possible for months, Professor Michael Baker says.

And there's still 900,000 or more New Zealanders who haven't had the booster, which is really quite shocking." "Death as an acute outcome is awful but it's very rare in children. There were also 494 people in hospital, 15 in intensive care. It was likely only half or even a third of community cases were being recorded, but he expected official numbers to remain in the thousands a day "for the foreseeable future", Baker said. There were 7930 new cases of Covid-19 in the community on Saturday and 19 new deaths announced - including two children aged under 9 and a person in their 20s.
