Hurricanes meet Islanders in an important game for the Canes (Cardiac Cane)

Carolina will be making its first trip to the new UBS Arena in Elmont, on Long Island. It's the Canes' first trip to this new building and they will be looking ...

We saw the Canes’ last-second heroics get them past the New Jersey Devils last night, but the New York Islanders did that to the Canes not too long ago. To complete the final back-to-back of the season and the last matinee of the year, the New York Islanders will be the Hurricanes’ opponent for this one. If they can confirm two points in Elmont this afternoon, they will put all the pressure on the New York Rangers for their game at MSG on Tuesday. However, the Islanders are an opponent that will not roll over for Carolina.

Preview: Canes at Islanders (BlueJackets.com)

The Carolina Hurricanes finally make their first-ever trip to UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders, Sunday.

A Look At The Other Side: The Islanders suffered a disappointing defeat to Buffalo yesterday, with a three-goal second period turning out to be the difference. It is the first time in Canes history a defenseman has had 41 assists and 51 points in a season, etching new single-season highs for the organization. Ilya Sorokin, who did play yesterday, and his .926 SV% ranks only behind Igor Shesterkin of the Rangers. With Frederik Andersen out of the lineup until at least next week with a lower-body injury, "Rants" will likely have the nod today with Kochetkov having started yesterday. In simplest terms, if the Canes win today and Tuesday against the Rangers, they will lock up the 2022 Metropolitan Division Championship. There are other avenues to get it done, but Carolina controls their own destiny at this point. Things looked bleak for Carolina heading into the final media timeout of the afternoon, but just 24 seconds later, a Brady Skjei shot from the wall hit off of a Devils defender and went in.

Tried to play on in the moments following, but you could see he was hurt. Carolina’s backup was in noticeable pain before eventually leaving the game. The Islander struck back in the dying moments of the opening frame. He was in some clear lower-body pain after making this stop a few moments ago. Brett Pesce had a golden opportunity to extend the lead, but he missed an open goal. The Hurricanes failed to pick up a loose puck in their own zone, and the puck bounced around in front of the net before Ross Johnston got a piece of it and deflected it by Raanta to cut the Carolina lead in half.

Islanders look ready for season to end in loss to Hurricanes (New York Post)

The crowd was light and disinterested. So too, for large stretches, was the home team.

Ross Johnston managed to get one back at 18:25 of the first, converting after Matt Martin whacked a loose puck in his direction toward the crease. Things started going downhill just 2:25 into the game when, after a strong few opening shifts for the Islanders, Noah Dobson committed a heinous turnover in the Islanders end, giving Derek Stepan a free look at net to make it 1-0. Lucky for them, they won’t have to wait long, though after slipping to 35-34-10, the dignity of a record above NHL-.500 is in some danger with three games left on the schedule.

Domi, obtained at the trade deadline from Columbus, has been used all over the lineup, at wing and center, and Brind’Amour said, “It’s taken us a little while to figure him out. He soon allowed a power-play goal to Ryan Pullock that tied the score 2-2., but stopped all the rest. Obviously it’s not what you draw up and not what you want to happen — injuries to anybody and especially the goalies. Starting goalie Antti Raanta had to leave Sunday’s road game against the New York Islanders with a lower-body injury in the second period. Max Domi’s goal at 5:40 of the third period pushed the Canes into a 3-2 lead, and Carolina added empty-net scores from Jesper Fast and Brendan Smith to inflate the final margin.

3 Takeaways From Hurricanes' 3-2 Comeback in New Jersey - 4/23/22 (The Hockey Writers)

Antti Raanta says the locker room's first impressions of Pyotr Kochetkov are that "he's a mix of Andrei Vasilevskiy and Sergei Bobrovsky". No pressure.

A graduate of North Carolina State University, Brandon also co-hosts and edits a podcast with two other writers (one of which, Alex Ohari, is also a writer here at THW) called Tracking the Storm. The pod covers everything Carolina Hurricanes, from prospects, to game recaps, and everything in between. As many ups and downs as the Hurricanes have had this year (which pretty much all teams go through), they look to be turning the corner yet again as they prepare for their playoff run. The kid doesn’t back down from anyone, and his production is sure to be key for the Hurricanes. If the team continues to get these types of contributions from their young guys and depth players, they’ll be a tough out come playoff time. If they win two of their last three games or beat the Rangers in regulation in New York on Tuesday, the team will clinch that spot, as they own the tiebreaker right now. That’s how you open up passing lanes, especially of the cross-seam variety, thus leading to more higher-danger chances than simply passing around the perimeter and hoping you beat the goalie with a screened or tipped point shot. It was the rookie’s 16th of the year, and he has been coming on very strong for quite some time now, as it’s fair to say his rookie wall is a thing of the past. It was his 24th of the season, and, combined with everything else he does as a grinding, defensively responsible forward, has been one of Carolina’s most important – and definitely under-appreciated – players. He’ll be back with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves whenever Andersen returns from injury, where he’ll play a key role as one of that league’s best teams makes a run for the Calder Cup. Kochetkov will be back soon enough, regardless, and when the time comes should return with confidence knowing he’s capable of competing at the sport’s highest level. With under five minutes to play, the Hurricanes had finally gotten one behind the New Jersey goalie, and they were within striking distance. However, we saw what those who have tracked him have come to expect: size, athleticism, competitiveness, and a chance for his team to win every time he’s between the pipes. It may not be the best process at this juncture of the season to keep seeing themselves fall behind in multi-goal holes, but the team keeps on finding ways to bank wins anyway. Called up after the injury to starter Frederik Andersen, to say the hype around him coming in was immense would be an understatement.
