The race was being livestreamed when the crash took place. A voice-over was also heard announcing that the race meeting was being officially cancelled. The man who died is understood to be Stephen Penn, a member of the Manawatū Mustangs.

Driver dies at Palmerston North speedway (RNZ)

A driver has died in a crash at the speedway in Palmerston North. Emergency services were called to the track at about 6.15pm.

Thousands of racing fans and drivers were expected in the region. Racing for the rest of tonight and tomorrow were called off. The Superstock Teams Champs event is being held this weekend, and is one of the city's biggest events of the year.

The driver was involved in a “seriously big hit”, a witness says, colliding with another car before going straight into the wall “head on”.

“They were trying to get the teams out of the way in case it rained. "It looked like he was knocked out instantly. A St John spokesperson said they were called to Pascal St near the Arena at 6.06pm and were on scene assisting police. He was not on the brakes and carried on around the track before coming to a stop.” A witness, who declined to give their name, said the crash happened during the first race of the night. The driver was Stephen Penn, a member of the Manawatū Mustangs.
