Sam Kerr helps Chelsea extend WSL lead (7NEWS.com.au)

Matildas skipper Sam Kerr scored one goal and had another disallowed as Chelsea beat Kyah Simon's Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the Women's Super League.

Erin Cuthbert thumped a shot off the foot of the post in the 79th minute and Kerr had a goal ruled out for offside as Spurs battled hard, but they were unable to get the goal that would have boosted the title hopes of North London rivals Arsenal. The Blues struck back almost immediately as Pernille Harder crossed for Matildas skipper Kerr to score the third header of the game and put Chelsea back in front in first-half stoppage time. Bethany England and Sam Kerr netted first-half goals as Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 to increase their lead at the top of the Women's Super League to four points over second-placed Arsenal.

Dominant Chelsea march on towards WSL title with second win over ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Chelsea are six points away from securing a third successive league title after commanding performance at Kingsmeadow.

It was the most delicate back-heel that would dominate the highlight reels though, as she duped Harrop with ease and ran around her to calmly dink a cross through to Kerr at the near post, who headed in her 18th goal of the season. The goal was mostly credit to Pernille Harder, who had a superb match. That was largely because Chelsea were back to their dominant selves, in a relentless - if not ruthless - mood.

England and Kerr fire Chelsea to win over Tottenham and stretch ... (The Guardian)

Goals from Beth England and Sam Kerr earned Chelsea a 2-1 win over Tottenham to keep them on course for the WSL title.

“You know what, we were talking about it before the game, it’s the same as last year, we were two points off City,” said Kerr. “One point, two points, it’s just one game, we’re in exactly the same position – and we play for Chelsea, we love this stuff.” Central to Chelsea’s dominance was Harder who, playing wide but operating fluidly in combination with Kerr and England, pulled the strings, creating space and tracking back in equal measure. She was right, it mattered little, two games, two wins and Chelsea will secure the title. Chelsea would almost score, with Erin Cuthbert driving forward before rattling a powerful shot off the base of the post. Dang, should have 19 [in the league this season] then eh,” said Kerr with a grin. There is something about the character of these Chelsea players that means they always bite back harder, and Spurs had just poked the bear.

Make or Break's behind-the-scenes look at the World Surf League engages fans and non-fans alike even if some hard questions remain ignored.

Left unremarked is the profound philosophical shift prompted by wave pool surfing for a sport and past-time founded on a deep, even spiritual connection to the sea. “It would be a moment in women’s surfing history ... but at the same time, farrkkk it’s Pipe,” laughs Wright while weighing up the switch (she ultimately won the event). Pipeline now permanently hosts both the men’s and women’s competition, a positive development – albeit the sport’s lingering gender inequality remains evident in Make or Break, which focuses disproportionately on the men’s competition across the series. Given Make or Break was produced in partnership with the WSL, it is surprising that the first season engages more fully with some of surfing’s own pitfalls. The show is unafraid to explore the gritty reality of life on tour, with heartfelt and revealing interviews. Make or Break, an entertaining seven-part series, is the latest attempt by the surfing elite to capitalise on its popularity. But the show’s real triumph is its ability to engage surfing fans and non-fans alike with well-told stories.

That means there are bigger names and more interest in the Challenger Series. We’ve already seen the broadcast team pushing the agenda of the mid-season cut. As the fates of the world’s best surfers are decided in fickle, Main Break peaks, it is worth considering the idea that the WSL has used the promise of higher views generated by the cut to leverage more money from sponsors – in simple terms, an upsell.
