What impact will Covid-19 have in the classroom? It all depends on these four factors.
If there is a lot of Covid-19 in the community, there is a greater risk of spread within schools. Much of it is being driven by the fact that many countries have moved to the “we need to get back to normal” phase of the pandemic and are ditching most if not all public health measures, including testing and genome sequencing. What is required to achieve this is a commitment to having strong layers of protection in place, especially if and when case numbers start to rise again. That data is really clear that Covid-19 can cause outbreaks in schools when prevention measures aren’t in place and particularly if there is high transmission in the local community. If all the parents and adults connected to schools who are eligible got boosted, this would protect them from Covid-19 and help reduce transmission in the community, and by extension, in schools. Most of the primary school children who have been vaccinated got their doses in the first three weeks of the vaccine rollout before schools reopened. Many will have seen news headlines reporting the numbers of Covid-19 cases connected to schools and daycares, often in the thousands or tens of thousands per week. What’s remarkable about these studies is that they consistently show that schools can be surprisingly good at stopping chains of onward transmission of Covid-19 when certain preventative measures are in place. The board sets the strategic direction of the school and is responsible for health and safety as well as employing the school’s staff. While some schools have clearly done very well through the pandemic and seen little transmission, there are lots of families who have been able to shield almost completely except for attending school, and who can pinpoint that the virus came into their homes from school. On the one side is the narrative that schools are super-spreading environments. On the other is the narrative that schools are safe, low risk environments no matter what.

Last week, students and their families had a chance to visit the school for an open house. The district added dozens more security cameras, made sure all classroom doors can be locked, developed a digital hall pass system and students will have to pass through metal detectors before entering the building. Students at Erie High School this week will return to their classrooms for the first time since a shooting inside a school hallway a month ago.

As more families opt for homeschool and private schools, public school systems are feeling the pinch as enrollment drops. Corresponding budget cuts are ...
In Iowa, the Des Moines district canceled a conference, sold a building, and isn’t replacing some retiring teachers as it cuts $9.4 million in spending for the upcoming school year. The Associated Press’ reporting around issues of race and ethnicity is supported in part by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. The AP is solely responsible for all content. It is part of an effort to close a budget shortfall brought on by declining enrollment and to free up money for raises. Federal relief money helped cover the $53.5 million price tag for the more lucrative contract for teachers and support staff for the current school year. “It did help to get us through what’s been a historically bad moment in history. In Houston, the largest district in Texas, enrollment tumbled by more than 22,000 to around 183,000 in fall 2021 and only about half of those students have returned. The district hasn’t released a cost-cutting plan but legislative analysts say it will require layoffs and school closures. “That might sound crazy,” the district wrote in a blog post, acknowledging the influx of federal aid. The district was shielded from making cuts in the first two years of the pandemic by what are known as “hold harmless” provisions, but those protections are expected to end. Money for schools is driven partly by student headcounts, and emergency provisions in many states allowed schools to maintain funding at pre-pandemic levels. Other districts around the country are merging classrooms, selling buildings, and leaving teaching positions unfilled in order to close budget gaps. More districts will be making cuts in coming years, said Alex Spurrier, an associate partner at Bellwether Education Partners, a think tank.
