How and when to seek a pay rise amid rising inflation (RTE.ie)

Asking your employer for a pay rise may seem daunting, but it helps to be prepared. Kieran McKeown, Managing Director of Matrix Recruitment said it is important ...

"That said, everyone is aware of the increase in the cost-of-living, so it makes sense that you too are aware of this and how it affects your market value," he said. "You may want to re-evaluate what's important to you and whether staying in your current role at your current rate is going to result in increased dissatisfaction for you and even company resentment," he said. "Certainly, do not threaten to quit your position if you do not get a raise," she said. "The meeting is not about them, it’s about you and why you’re deserving of the pay rise," he said. "It will damage your standing with your manager, and you may put yourself in a situation where you feel obliged to act on your ultimatum." "If you are in this position, you should consider what motivated you to apply for a new job in the first place." "Maybe it is genuinely time for you to take the next step in your career," she said. If the offer is too good to ignore, he said you may decide that staying or leaving will depend on whether or not you get a pay rise. "You should be able to find the going rate for your job and the next level up, if that is your choice," she said. If you are considering taking up a role elsewhere, and have a genuine job offer, she said you could think about asking your company to match the salary of the counteroffer. "It will show you’re taking this seriously, are professional in your approach, and have solid facts to back you up," he said. "Focus on what you have brought to the company in the time since your last pay increase," he said.

Lawmakers seek deal on energy-climate package, Ukraine aid (E&E News)

Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) are hosting two meetings on a possible bipartisan deal ...

Additionally, top House and Senate appropriators met for the first time late week to try to forge a deal on top-line discretionary spending for fiscal 2023. But Democrats also had to put off considering the nominee because of absences. A procedural vote on Cook, nominee to serve on the Federal Reserve board, failed 47-51. Last week, the Senate confirmed Lael Brainard to be Fed board vice chair ( E&E Daily, July 27). So, I would hope that we can do that,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday ahead of a surprise visit over the weekend to Kyiv where she met with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Republicans are sponsoring motions to instruct conferees on high-profile innovation legislation, and many of their proposals are on energy and climate policy. The same goes for Federal Reserve nominee Lisa Cook. Several Cabinet officials are also due on Capitol Hill this week to outline their proposals for fiscal 2023 spending. The Ukraine funding is likely to attract wide, bipartisan support, but Democrats are also weighing attaching $22 billion in pandemic-related spending that could complicate passage. Democrats insisted last week that they could negotiate both at the same time. “And then maybe we can see if there’s something of a skeleton.” Republicans have been cool to more spending on that front and have made the aid a proxy for concerns over a proposal for lifting immigration restrictions tied to Covid-19.

Eurozone ministers seek to forge ahead with banking union (Telegraph.co.uk)

Mr Donohoe, the Irish finance minister, has said that the European Union may never secure a deal if it cannot reach an agreement in the latest round of talks. A ...

European nations have been trying to set up a banking union since the eurozone debt crisis. "But of course the official position is that this is about strengthening the eurozone economy." A source said: "There are cynics who would say that the EU doesn't like to waste a good crisis and that all of this was about using the eurozone crisis as yet another justification for increasing centralisation of power. "We cannot and should not underestimate the importance of this unity - for Europe as a political and an economic bloc - nor for the impact that it will have beyond the immediacy of the current situation. "Those who are the most solvent, those who have the strongest national arrangements are going to be on the hook." "The strength of a united Europe and countries like Germany putting European values ahead of individual interests, has been, if it is possible for there to be one, a positive consequence.
