Jockey, trainer help long-shot Rich Strike in Derby upset (Kansas City Star)

Jockey Sonny Leon and trainer Eric Reed hit the ground running in every way imaginable for the Kentucky Derby.

That connection between horse and rider was clear as Leon guided Rich Strike from 15th after a mile behind contender Messier on the rail in the stretch. "Everybody enjoy it, we might not ever get the chance again so let’s not waste the day worrying.’ And we all painted our little pinky golden for luck. "And, the scenario in which I went 0 for 24, you couldn’t make up. “I had to wait until the stretch and that’s what I did. I waited, and then the rail opened up. “We had a difficult post but I know the horse,” Leon said about Rich Strike’s No. 20 far outside starting spot.

Rich Strike made it an unforgettable party (Arkansas Online)

It is billed as the fastest two minutes in sports. Give or take a few seconds, the Kentucky Derby is the biggest thoroughbred racing event in the world.

For most, it is a party that starts in the morning and ends at night. On Saturday, the 148th Kentucky Derby went in the books as another success and the Derby could and should be a movie some day. The network had to mention it, but it left no doubt -- even with all the success Baffert has had, how he became the face of thoroughbred racing and probably one of the most powerful figures in the business -- no one is bigger than the Kentucky Derby. The only other time Rich Strike won a race was when he broke his maiden last September. It was his only other race at Churchill, and he won by 17 1/2 lengths. He used the rail to his advantage and rallied like his hair was on fire on the inside of Epicenter and Zandon, the strong closer and the pick of many of the NBC experts. A $30,000 purchase last year and $7,500 as a yearling, Rich Strike stunned the blue-bloods when in the last 50 yards he went by co-favorite Epicenter like he was standing still.

Only Donerail in 1913 had a higher payout of $184.90 but that was an eight-horse race, making Rich Strike’s victory all the more impressive. “We found out about 30 seconds before the deadline on Friday,” owner Rick Dawson said. Not bad for a boy from Maroubra. We just left the Kentucky Derby winner and we’re heading home. I actually had to drive three hours to get here today, so it has been a long day but a good day.” He then zigged and zagged his way through the field on Rich Strike to the outside on the home turn, back to the rail in the straight before going around one horse on the rail and bursting through on the inside and win. “I still can’t believe it.

In the immediate aftermath of the race, an objection was raised against Maximum Security, accusing him and jockey Luis Saez of interfering with several horses down the final straightaway. And considering how well Epicenter performed yet again, it seems like there's a good chance he'll be the early betting favorite when the odds are released for the Preakness. If it wasn't for Rich Strike's incredible comeback, Epicenter appeared to be on his way to a Derby victory coming out of the final turn. So while he won't be the Preakness favorite, expect him to be among the top four or five horses in the field. The early odds for the Preakness haven't yet been released, but there's a good chance that Rich Strike won't be the favorite. And it's been shown over the years how difficult it is for a horse to win both races, much less all three Triple Crown events. Then, Rich Strike became the second-largest longshot to win the Derby, behind only Donerail, who had 91-1 odds when he raced to victory in 1913.

Lani finished ninth in the Derby (and third in the Belmont) in 2016. The first Japanese horse to run in the race was Ski Captain in 1995, who finished 14th. Now, Lukas has the option of running Secret Oath against the boys on May 21 in the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown. It would hardly be a stretch for the Hall of Fame trainer. Curlin, the horse of the year in 2007, finished third that year. He is trying to win the Derby after only two starts, a feat accomplished only once before, by a horse named Leonatus in 1883. Epicenter and Taiba were the favorites as of 4 p.m. Here are the odds for the 2022 Kentucky Derby, as of 4 p.m. Eastern time, listed in order of post position. But he has followed the horse’s career and will be rooting him on from afar. “The only thing I told him when he told me wanted to name a horse Messier was that he better get it right,” Hughes said. He was 12-1 in the morning line.

Trainer Eric Reed recalled all of the work Leon had done behind the scenes, well before the Derby. “I owe this to him,” Reed said. “The big difference is a million dollars and a Grade 1,” Lukas said. “It would be nice to get her a second Grade 1.” BARGAIN CHAMP: Behind one of the great upsets in Derby history was the wonderful reality that any astute trainer could have had giant-killer Rich Strike by claiming him for a relatively meager $30,000 last Sept. 17 at Churchill Downs. Trainer Eric Reed was intrigued by the Keen Ice colt bred by Calumet Farm. He had noted that the horse worked well before he finished 10th in a maiden special weight race on Ellis Park’s turf.

Where does Rich Strike's win rank among the all-time Kentucky ... (USA TODAY)

The 80-1 longshot made history on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Here's how his improbable victory stacks up to historic wins by Mine That Bird, ...

It’s difficult to compare anything in sports from more than 100 years ago to the modern era, but Donerail remains the longest shot to win the Derby at odds of 91-to-1. The recipient of that good fortune was Country House, who was 65-to-1 and very much deserving of those odds. It remains the only time the Derby winner has ever been taken down by the stewards for a racing foul. By the time NBC race announcer Tom Durkin actually figured out what was happening and who that was making a big move inside, Mine That Bird had already run past everyone on the way to a 6 3/4-length victory. As sometimes happens in the Derby, the entire race was shaped by a suicidal pace on the front end: 21.78 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.36 for the half-mile. But trainer, Juan Arias, was convinced to try the Derby after Canonero won a race against older horses and then another at Derby distance of 1 1/4 miles. In that kind of meltdown scenario, the race slows down considerably and leg-weary horses end up staggering home. Every horse who was running close to that pace was completely cooked by the quarter-pole. Still, the level of racing in Venezuela just does not compare to the U.S., so the horse wasn’t taken seriously at all. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 80-to-1 upset by Rich Strike in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby is undoubtedly one of the biggest shocks horse racing has seen in a long time. The horse’s owner, Rick Dawson, said Saturday he had campaigned fewer than 10 winners and had not even won an allowance race as an owner, much less a stakes. Charismatic, the 1999 Derby winner, ran for a claiming tag early in his career but went unclaimed.

Wayne Lukas had scratched Ethereal Road. Rich Strike scored the second-biggest upset in Kentucky Derby history and paid $163.60 on a $2 win bet. He was getting more cocky. “I’ve only had this happen one time before, and it wasn’t under these good circumstances,” he said of the attention. “And if Rich is ready to go and I think it’s the right thing for him, we’re going to go. Ironically, owner Willis Sharpe Kilmer had initially bought Exterminator not to race, but to help train two year old Sun Briar, a U.S. Champion. He and jockey Bobby Ussery won the 93rd Kentucky Derby by a length, while also registering what was the third-fastest time at that point at 2:00.60. Giacomo (2005), 50-1 Although he was a longshot, the horse did have winning in its blood as his father was Birdstone, the 2004 Kentucky Derby winner. Maximum Security finished the race ahead by 1 3/4 lengths, but was eventually disqualified after Country House jockey Flavien Prat filed an objection. He claimed that the winning horse had come out of his lane in the final turn and made contact with another horse named War of Will, who then made contact his horse. Here is the full CBS Sports story on Rich Strike's win. Rich Strike pulled a huge upset during the 2022 Kentucky Derby by winning against 80-1 odds.
