Max Verstappen cruises to win in Formula One's inaugural Miami ... (USA TODAY)

Max Verstappen used an aggressive early pass on Charles Leclerc then controlled the inaugural Miami Grand Prix for his third victory of the season.

“We struggled a little bit after five, six laps with the front tires, and then we struggled and basically lost the race in that stage,” Leclerc said. It was a strange event for Haas F1, the only American team on the 20-car grid. After the race, Perez said he’s started talks on a new contract with Red Bull but neither side is in a hurry to complete a deal. “And after the safety car, I really felt that we had a shot to actually take back the lead.” “I think it was our best race so far this year,” he said. Promoters never had a general ticket sale because of crushing early demand and the campus surrounding Hard Rock Stadium was the place to party over the last three days. Serena Williams ducked into Mercedes’ hospitality and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny arrived at the venue with Perez and spent most of pre-race at Red Bull with the Mexican driver. F1 will add Las Vegas as a third American race in 2023. Verstappen started third after Ferrari locked up the front row with Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. in qualifying. Verstappen now trails him by 19 points headed into the Spanish Grand Prix in two weeks. His first day racing around the new Formula One circuit in Miami was absolutely horrible. The 23rd win of the Dutchman’s career sliced eight points off Leclerc’s lead in the standings.

Alonso – now holding a five-second penalty for contact with Gasly – led Schumacher and Ocon at the back of the top 10. "I think I’ll stick to racing," he said when asked by Willy T Ribbs if he was fit enough to step into the boxing ring, "but I appreciate a lot of boxing. Tsunoda was however promoted to 12th after the post-race penalties for Alonso and Ricciardo. That left Williams driver Latifi in P14. The podium saw the top three celebrate in front of Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino – and his statue. Then, on Lap 41, Gasly – who had previously been tapped at the final corner by Alonso – went wide at Turn 8, rejoined, and clashed with Norris, ripping the McLaren’s rear-right tyre off and sending him into a spin. Leclerc prepared his rebuttal, tailing the Red Bull throughout the next lap – but the reigning champion was now in a commanding position. Leclerc was next to pit, a swap to hards taking 3.2 seconds, as he emerged in P4 on Lap 25. A sensor issue was to blame and Perez was back – but had lost considerable time (and some engine power to boot) to Sainz ahead. Perez attempted to pass Sainz on Lap 52 but locked up, both drivers avoiding contact, while Leclerc was under half a second behind Verstappen in the chase for the lead. On Lap 6, he took P6 off Gasly and the seven-time champion was back where he began. Hamilton lamented the fact that he couldn't pit during the VSC but was promoted to P6 when Valtteri Bottas went wide at Turn 17 on Lap 49. Perez took the opportunity to pit for new mediums from P4, emerging there, with hard-shod Verstappen, Leclerc and Sainz ahead.

Verstappen Wins, Drivers Call For Changes to Track: Three ... (CalBearsMaven)

Max Verstappen edged past Charles Leclerc, and Mercedes had a topsy turvy weekend. But was the track actually successful?

The important thing is that we’re able to race, and I will be able to race as well.” Ocon said on Sunday that he felt “50%” after the race, still feeling the after effects from Saturday’s crash. That was a shame not to see that implemented.” “When the car and tires are in the right window the car, except for the bouncing, feels really good to drive. Sainz and Esteban Ocon crashed in the same turn a day apart from each other, but both said the crash was harder than it should have been. So, I’m just grateful for everyone continuing to keep their heads down and for the amazing hard work that everyone is putting in.” There was improvement in terms of how the team was finishing. George Russell previously highlighted that Imola was “the first weekend where I’ve been truly struggling with my back and, like, chest pains from the severity of the bouncing. With over 20 laps to go, the AlphaTauri star had contact with Fernando Alonso and was running slower. Typically the cause is related to the cars’ aerodynamics. Meanwhile, the Ferrari star appeared to struggle despite running in the top two spots consistently throughout the afternoon, saying at one point “The car is so difficult to drive,” before pitting for hard tires. Weather, including the heat, aside, numerous drivers complained about the track, and Mercedes had a topsy turvy weekend that leaves everyone wondering if they have found a possible fix for the porpoising.

Things immediately felt different when former American race car driver Willy T. Ribbs was handed the microphone to conduct the post-race top-three interviews.

Once at the podium, Verstappen, Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were handed American football helmets which they were forced to wear. Christian Horner and his wife Geri broke out into a run as they were forced to make the long journey while escorted by police bikes. Next, personnel from Red Bull and Ferrari made a long journey under Hard Rock Stadium to the podium on the other side.

What is 'porpoising'? Mercedes F1 drivers face aerodynamic ... (USA TODAY)

Mercedes is trying to figure out the solution to "porpoising," the aerodynamic phenomenon that has affected their Formula 1 race cars this season.

"And that reaction is bouncing the car back up and you hit suction again, you bounce it down, you hit the ground..." "And you just go slow," Russell said. Each season, Formula 1 institutes new rules and regulations for how cars can be constructed, with the goal of eliminating "dirty air" so drivers can race closer to one another.

We don’t really understand why that is, so there is work to do.” “You sound like a bit of a genius when things like that happen but it was a total fluke,” was Russell’s candid opinion of his strategy call after the race.

Max Verstappen wins the Miami Grand Prix: F1 – as it happened (The Guardian)

The Red Bull defending world champion overtook pole-position Charles Leclerc early in the race and held the position to the chequered flag.

33/57 Hamilton is in seventh and George Russell is in fifth. 32/57 Verstappen’s lead over Leclerc is 7.5 seconds, and those two look the likely 1-2 come the end of the race. 42/57 Hamilton is coming in while the safety car is out, and on soft tyres. Leclerc is showing the fastest times around the middle section, and in comes Sainz to change his tyres, having led for barely a lap. 38/57 Verstappen has the fastest lap now, worth an extra point, of course. 41/57 Famous last words from Phil as Lando Norris comes a cropper, and there is a safety car. 51/57 Leclerc continues to chase down Verstappen, who is better round the bends even if the Red Bull has the better on the straight. 46/57 The fans in the stands look a bit perplexed by this safety car malarkey, it’s not the racing they came to see. Verstappen gets a jump on Leclerc as Perez chases Sainz. Is there a yellow flag on the play? Perez in fourth, with the Mercs of Russell and Hamilton in fifth and sixth. 53/57 This is close at the front, and any mistake now would surely decide the outcome. 52/57 Leclerc and Verstappen go at it once more.

South Florida throws party, Formula One crashes it, and a match is ... (Palm Beach Post)

Celebrities, glitz and glamor were all there Sunday for the inaugural Miami Grand Prix. Max Verstappen won after a bit of late-race drama.

As for our first taste of the sport, nothing topped the paddock as the place to see and be seen. Race organizers were pledging even before the race to see what they could do to enhance the chances of lead changes that are a lifeblood of this sport. Inside of a year, workers constructed 173 tents, 53 hospitality structures and 36 garages, all the while knowing every bit of it will have to go, except for the paddock area, now that the show’s over. Robbie built this stadium with his own money, opening in 1987 with those orange seats, no canopy and little resemblance to what it is today, both physically and practically. Before anyone feels sorry for Stephen Ross’ wallet, on the positive side, there is a possibility that down the road, some structures won’t have to be rebuilt every year. “It was very important for us to deliver a great event,” Garfinkel said. Now, Formula One — which historically came to only 10 other U.S. cities — sees fit to make Miami Gardens and Hard Rock Stadium No. 11. Garfinkel recently met with FIFA representatives in another pitch to secure matches for World Cup 2026 — including his new desire to land the final. It was hot stuff, all right, thanks to a heat index of 93 at the start and teams’ curious decision not to install air conditioning in their cars. Two things that fall into the latter category were food concessions and ticketing. “I think I need a drink, mate,” he said. I think we kept it exciting until the end.”

F1 drivers have asked FIA to clean Miami's first corner (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

But he suggested that the lack of grip at the pit exit is "going to be interesting". Williams' head of vehicle performance, Dave Robson, says the drivers back in the pack will have to "accept the lack of grip" off-line at the start in a bid to gain ground. "Because it's basically like driving on a dry line and out of the line feels like it's wet – so we need a bit of help there from the race direction to help us."

Report Card: Grading the 2022 Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix (Motor Trend)

F1's inaugural race in Miami was a strong first effort. With the race now complete it's time to hand out our grades for the hotly anticipated event.

Improving the track somewhat might prove more of a challenge, and we don't yet know what it will cost or if it's reasonably feasible to eliminate the bumps or if the grip level across the track comes up a notch or three with a bit of time. But the race certainly wasn't bad, and some drivers also opined that the dopey, fiddly chicane that comprises Turns 14 and 15 should be removed in order to potentially improve the show, or at least the flow of the circuit. Point is, at these ticket prices and an almost instant sellout, and the paying fans' general reaction to the product they received, the proof of concept is there. The 2022 Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix was an absolute success overall: off the track, on the track, and—key to its long-term prospects—financially. Well, at least it seemed like it was financially successful: Dolphins CEO and Miami GP boss Tom Garfinkel said his corporation won't make money on this first race, but that's typical in this wild game of hosting F1 when organizers have to spend tens or even hundreds of millions up front to put it all together. Had it not been for the safety-car period, though, the race appeared likely to deliver little drama for much of its distance. The race resumed with 10 laps to go, Verstappen leading Leclerc, Sainz, and Perez, the second Red Bull now holding the advantage of fresh tires following a late pitstop. But Verstappen got around Sainz on the outside of Turn 1 (so much for zero grip), and during the opening stages it looked like it might stay that way for a good while. It was obvious a lot of the fans are new to the sport and have some way to go before they understand F1's more arcane, complex nuances. The 57-lap race started with Leclerc's Ferrari on pole ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz in second place and Verstappen in third. Even "regular" grandstand tickets were expensive, with the cheapest ones priced at $640. Pro tip: General admission "Campus Pass" tickets—$300 for Friday practice sessions, and creeping to $500 for the race, or $1,200 for all three days—might be some of the best general admission tickets in all of pro sports. It's unfair to credit or blame race organizers for weather, but speaking of "hotly," the 2022 Miami F1 Grand Prix was a scorcher. A fair chunk of it normally serves as parking lots, but you'd never know it unless you noticed the parking-space lines painted on some of the asphalt you walked on as you explored the grounds.

“Putting on a good first-year event is a challenge to get everything right, given the size and scale and newness to it,” Brown said. Miami is the 11th different venue to host an F1 race in the United States, but the series had struggled to gain traction in the country until late. It took years for COTA to grow, and behind the “DTS” mania last year’s race in Austin drew more than 300,000 over three days. A gondola can take guests from the marina to The Beach Club, where Post Malone went head-to-head with F1 qualifying. So, I think putting on a great event, and then having it be sustainable over decades, I don’t say it’s easy to do, but clearly it can be done. “Formula One is all around, the amount of guest requests we have is amazing. The U.S. went four years without an F1 event before Circuit of America’s in Austin, Texas, brought the European series back to the States in 2012. Brown cautioned to wait until the checkered flag before grading Miami’s first race. The event is the hottest ticket in sports right now. It can be found at the corner of NW 27th Ave. and NW 199th St. in Miami Gardens, a land-locked neighborhood some 15 miles away from F1’s initial desired downtown location. Hard Rock has hosted Super Bowls, college playoff games, a major tennis tournament, international soccer, concerts and the “Rolling Loud” musical festival. It isn’t exactly Monaco, but the man-made marina is a 25,000-square-foot dry dock designed to look like water.
