Erling Haaland set to join Manchester City after passing medical (The Guardian)

City ready to pay Borussia Dortmund £64m for Norwegian · Striker poised to sign five-year contract at Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola’s desire to also acquire Jack Grealish, who cost City a British‑record £100m when he joined from Aston Villa last summer, made the transfer of Kane impossible. However, he already has 181 senior games at the age of 21 and City are confident he will be a success. The deal is expected to be announced imminently by the German club, Haaland having informed them of his wish to leave after two-and-a-half years in Germany. Personal terms between the player and City have been agreed.

Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano informed BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke last week City are ready to activate the striker's €75m release clause.

The 75m euro fee - which equates to £62m - for Haaland is widely considered to be below market value. I think there's enough spoken about this transfer. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, he said: "I signed a new contract knowing that City would not stop developing. "If Erling Haaland goes there, it will not weaken them, definitely not. The release clause on his contract is €75m. It's possible obviously and we can do that.

Erling Haaland and Manchester City Near a Deal (The New York Times)

City, which is nearing its fourth Premier League title in five years, would be strengthened further by adding Haaland, the 21-year-old Dortmund striker.

Alfie Haaland signed with City in June 2000, only weeks before Erling was born, but retired in 2003 after several injury-marred seasons in Manchester and one infamous foul at the hands of Manchester United’s Roy Keane. But the numbers most likely put Haaland out of reach of other teams, including Barcelona, which is mired in a financial crisis that led it to lose Lionel Messi for free last summer, and Bayern Munich, whose sporting director said recently that adding Haaland “ doesn’t make any sense” for the perennial German champions since the team already employs a world-class striker in Robert Lewandowski. City and its rivals were facing a June deadline to activate the release clause in Haaland’s Dortmund contract — said to be worth as much as 75 million euros, or just under $80 million.

Why is Erling Haaland joining Manchester City? Reasons Dortmund ... (Sporting News)

With reports that Erling Haaland to Man City is a "done deal" here's why he joined the Manchester club, how he'll fit in, and what his future prospects are ...

Man City are one of the most possession-oriented teams in the entire world, and to a lesser extent that tracks with Dortmund's style as well. His touch efficiency is also far better than anyone else currently at City. In his 23 Bundesliga appearances this season, Haaland produced 65 non-blocked shots on 150 touches in the opposition penalty area, a whopping 43 percent shot to touch rate. Meanwhile, Man City's four-player combination that were most utilized in a purely attacking role — Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, and Phil Foden — collected 601 touches in the opposition penalty area, producing 165 non-blocked shots, a 27 percent rate. Haaland's arrival will require a reversion back to the setup with Aguero in the team, which could cause some tactical upheaval within Guardiola's plans. If the young Norwegian hopes to reach the levels of brand names like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, this is a critical component of his next destination. At Man City, Haaland will get the global exposure he needs to become one of the world's most recognized players. With Borussia Dortmund, Haaland failed to advance past the quarterfinals in any of his three seasons. While Man City's 13.8 percent goal conversion rate this season is tops in the Premier League, it's a far cry from Dortmund's 19 percent, fueled by Haaland's finishing. Most of the reports are referring to the move as a "done deal." This allowed Haaland and his agents possessed all the leverage in negotiations for personal terms. He left to play three more seasons in his native Norway before retirement, but a connection to Manchester was clearly well-established. Sky Germany reports that the release clause stipulates the transfer fee must be paid in one lump sum installment.

Haaland is a fantasy player but he or Manchester City will have to ... (The Guardian)

Haaland is not an obvious fit for Guardiola but target men have thrived under him before and, with applied intelligence, can do so here.

The point here is simply that one side of this equation will have to change. Before that the complete list in 16 years as a head coach reads: Lewandowski, David Villa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But his record of working with goalscorers is also phenomenal. At the end of which the team that obsess most over possession have signed a star player whose one weakness is his ability to keep possession. It is certainly a select club that Haaland is joining. This is not to suggest the move will be a failure. Guardiola is a great coach who will work like a maniac to make this fit. The real gamble here, the real point of interest, is tactical. Dig a little and the signing of Haaland is something of a departure for Pep Guardiola, even quite a reckless tactical move. This is a mouthwatering prospect. Haaland is goals, a footballer who has pared back his role to the pursuit of football’s most basic unit. Haaland has become a far more complete player in the past two seasons. On the face of it this looks like the most basic piece of maths.

"I don't know [if he will be fit to face Chelsea]," Klopp said. "Good player, good player. The boys are invited to follow that path so yes, we don't waste energy really to think 'hopefully they lose.' We just know we have to win. "A lot," he replied.

Erling Haaland and Manchester City Make for a Frightening ... (Sports Illustrated)

From a marketing point of view, perhaps that is a logical next step, pushing the brand through celebrity to shore up those revenue streams so City is not reliant on deals with companies based in the UAE. But there is a danger that disrupts Guardiola’s footballing project, which demands subjugation to the system. There has long been a sense that City can become predictable, that it needs something to break up the neat patterns as Lionel Messi used to break things up for Barcelona. Haaland is the sort of player who can win a game from nowhere, who might mean that City does not have to dominate or be in control. There is no reason why Haaland won’t become the face of City for a generation. His signature goal, bursting through challenges from deep, may be harder to enact with City, which plays so habitually high that he is unlikely to have such space to charge into, but if he can add a more direct counterattacking element, particularly against higher-level opponents, that is all to the good. He can batter opponents out of the way, but his game is a lot more subtle than that. He managed the transition from Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund well, and he has thrived in the Champions League, suggesting a capacity to learn—although the Premier League represents a bigger change of style than shifting from Austria to Germany, and will impose more consistent physical demands.

Man City sign Erling Haaland: The staggering numbers that made ... (ESPN)

Here's a breakdown of the prolific output that transformed Erling Haaland from breakout star to the most sought-after goal scorer in the game.

One of the first major accolades he acquired was becoming the first player ever on record to score for two different teams in the same Champions League season (Salzburg and Dortmund). Among the other milestones he's surpassed in the UEFA competition, Haaland is the first-ever player to score multiple goals in four consecutive Champions League games. Since his move to Dortmund became official on the first day of 2020, Haaland has scored 85 competitive goals for the German club. It was also the first time a Dortmund player had scored three goals on his debut since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did likewise some seven years previously, coincidentally also against Augsburg. In all competitions for Dortmund this season (2021-22), the 21-year-old striker has scored 28 goals from 90 shots overall with 53 shots on target. Haaland is actually joint-third with Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the new City striker has amassed his tally in significantly fewer games -- just 88. A total of 71 goals scored by Haaland for Dortmund have come from open play, with 63 being assisted by teammates. But if City can keep him fit, expect to see more records tumble soon. A closer look at Haaland's goal haul at Dortmund reveals the kind of visceral, instinctive, and powerful striker he has become. Potent finishing aside, it's perhaps Haaland's sheer speed that remains the most intimidating weapon in his arsenal. In short, when stationed in front of goal he's pretty much the complete package. Sources have told ESPN that City activated a release clause with €60 million to sign Haaland, and he will sign a five-year contract worth £375,000 a week.
