Chelsea v Liverpool: FA Cup final – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Who will come out on top when the duo contest their second final of the season. Find out with Rob Smyth.

So even though Chelsea are current world champions, Liverpool have a stronger case to be the best team on the planet, and indeed in the solar system. Thomas Tuchel needs to make a call on the fitness of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, neither of whom are 100 per cent fit. (That lot on Neptune are still playing the W-M formation FFS.) The recent form of both clubs makes them odds-on favourites today, though Chelsea looked a lot perkier when they dismantled Leeds in the week. One of those was a 2-1 victory over Liverpool a decade ago, when Petr Cech made one of the great FA Cup final saves. This is the 150th FA Cup final; none of the previous 149 have involved one recent world champion, never mind two. Then, on 17 May 1997, they beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup final to win their first major honour in 26 years.

Old traditions meet modern convention in FA Cup final of promise (The Guardian)

Liverpool and Chelsea clash at Wembley on Saturday with a rich history of Cup success in today's changing landscape.

For all this, and for all the Cardiff heroics of Michael Owen in 2001 and Steven Gerrard in 2006, Liverpool have not won the Cup at Wembley for 30 years. Those seven wins between 1997 and 2018 – achieved under seven managers – feel somehow pivotal to the mythology of the modern Chelsea, the idea that there is no club in England better at lifting itself for the one-off occasion. But nor is it the sort of thing you put on the side of a bus. For Jürgen Klopp and his formidable Liverpool team, the FA Cup represents a sort of final frontier, a destination as well as a part of the wider journey. At its best the FA Cup is not simply a time capsule or historical re-enactment. One of the greatest misconceptions about the FA Cup over the years is that it has failed to move with the times.

MATCHDAY: Liverpool plays Chelsea in FA Cup final (USA TODAY)

The next step in Liverpool's quest for an unlikely quadruple of trophies is the FA Cup final on Saturday against Chelsea.

In the penultimate round of the league, the race for second place and an automatic Champions League spot is between Marseille and Monaco. Although second-placed Marseille holds a three-point lead over third-placed Monaco, it faces a tougher-looking trip to Rennes, which is battling with Nice to finish in fourth and the Europa League entry place. Freiburg could yet squeeze into the Champions League with a win at already-qualified Bayer Leverkusen – if Leipzig loses in Bielefeld. Union Berlin can clinch its place in the Europa League with a win at home over Bochum, but Cologne can capitalize on any Union slip-up by beating Stuttgart – which is fighting for survival. Bielefeld is the favorite to join already relegated Greuther Fürth in the second division, but it still has a chance of survival if it beats visiting Leipzig, which needs a point to reach the Champions League. Stuttgart, in the relegation playoff spot, could yet escape and leave Hertha in its place with a win over visiting Cologne if Hertha loses at Borussia Dortmund. Hertha just needs a draw to clinch survival. The next step in Liverpool’s quest for an unlikely quadruple of trophies is the FA Cup final against Chelsea. Jürgen Klopp’s side is looking to repeat the League Cup final triumph over the same London club in February. Winning world football’s oldest competition would complete the set of major trophies for Klopp since taking charge of Liverpool in 2015. An investment group led by Todd Boehly looks to complete the takeover from sanctioned owner Roman Abramovich. Tuchel has reached every major final since being hired by Chelsea at the start of 2021, winning the Champions League last season and the Club World Cup in February. The FA Cup final is celebrating 150 years since the start of the competition. Chelsea is almost certain to qualify for the Champions League by finishing third, so winning the FA Cup -- after Thomas Tuchel’s side was beaten in last season’s final by Leicester -- would provide a welcome lift.

and should Tuchel play Havertz or Lukaku? Liverpool and Chelsea's predicted XIs for the FA Cup final at Wembley This could just give him the edge over Konate. Tuchel has admitted that Kante is not 100% fit at the moment, but he is back in training, and given the significance of the match, he could be risked. However, Havertz is the ultimate big-game player, having scored in multiple cup finals already for Chelsea. With this in mind, it could leave Lukaku having to settle for a place on the bench. A calming influence at the back, he has proven time and time again that he is a man for the big occasions. At that point, it looked like his cup final dreams were in tatters, but he has made a remarkable recovery, and Tuchel has confirmed that he has a chance of playing. Thomas Tuchel put his faith in Mendy in the Carabao Cup final in February, and he is likely to do the same again here. Salah may have been a little unhappy to only start Liverpool's game against Villa on the bench given that the Golden Boot is on the line, but that should ensure that he is fresh for this game. He came on for the Brazilian in midweek and did a solid job, and Liverpool will hope that his experience will prove crucial in this clash. The Guinea international seems to have gone from strength to strength as the season has progressed, and he is likely to take his place on right-hand side of Liverpool's midfield three. He won the Player of the Match award in the Carabao Cup final, and the Dutchman will be hoping to create more happy memories with the Merseyside club at Wembley on Saturday. Caoimhin Kelleher got the nod in the Carabao Cup final, but Alisson has been Jurgen Klopp's preferred option in the latter stages of the FA Cup, and he should take his place in goal on this occasion as well.

Updates, score, team news and highlights from the FA Cup final at Wembley, as Liverpool continue their quadruple dream against Chelsea.

15 mins to KO: In the programme here at Wembley, American superstar Christian Pulisic - who scored in the 2020 FA Cup final loss to Arsenal - spoke of the importance of inspiring those in his homeland. Chelsea's recent record in the FA Cup is stronger, having won it five times since their rivals' last success. They'll take on a Liverpool midfield of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Thiago, following the injury in midweek to key man Fabinho. 50 mins to KO: In addition to the Carabao Cup stalemate, there was nothing to separate the rivals in their two league games this season, either. The Chelsea man had come out on top in the early knockings, but Diaz then tees up the Reds' first chance of the game, with his cross agonisingly unable to be met by Thiago. Deafening atmosphere from the Merseyside giants' fans in the buildup. 27th min: After a spell of light Liverpool pressure, Mount bursts forward to play in the onrushing Alonso for another golden opportunity, but Alisson comes up big to deny the Spaniard fantastically. Chelsea in all yellow, Liverpool in their traditional red. The Belgian has struggled to make an impact in this first half. Chelsea will be the happier of the two sides, after Klopp's men failed to make the most of their fantastic early pressure, particularly through Diaz, who was electric in his buildup but also somewhat wasteful. WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON — For the second time in three months, Liverpool face Chelsea at the home of football. 46th min: The second period is underway here, and it begins with Chelsea on the front foot.

Liverpool's FA Cup win completes the double, but can they shake off ... (ESPN)

Liverpool were exhausted by the end of Saturday's FA Cup final, but held on to win. Now can they find the energy to keep the Quadruple alive?

Yet they might also be needed at Southampton and, if Liverpool win that game, at home to Wolves on the final of the season next Sunday. They are all must-win fixtures, but players can push their physical and psychological limits only so far, and the situation with Fabinho, Salah and Van Dijk is a testament to do that. And that is the biggest problem now facing Liverpool in their quadruple quest: do they have enough time to play, win and recover before their next challenge? That fate has already befallen Fabinho, who missed this game because of a hamstring strain suffered in the 2-1 win at Aston Villa in midweek, but Klopp is confident that the Brazil midfielder will be fit to face Real. History tends not to remember the losers, and Chelsea's failure to win again will quickly be drowned out by a red tide of Liverpool plaudits. It is now two down, two to go, after a second cup final penalty shootout win against Chelsea this season saw Jurgen Klopp's team add the FA Cup to the Carabao Cup they lifted at Wembley three months ago.
