Dwight Yorke — who helped Sydney FC claim the inaugural A-League Men championship — will return to the competition, this time as a coach.

"Having played in the inaugural A-League Men's season I have continually followed the competition and am aware of both the footballing and fan demands in Australia," Yorke said in a statement. Yorke is no stranger to Australian football, having been Sydney FC's marquee player in the inaugural ALM season in 2005/06, as the Sky Blues went on to win the first championship. Yorke has signed a deal to lead the Bulls for the next two ALM seasons in what will be the ex-Trinidad and Tobago international's first senior coaching role.

Yorke has been given a two-year contract and he replaces Ante Milicic after the former Australia women's coach announced he was standing down at the end of the season. "I am extremely excited in what is my first-ever senior full-time head coaching role, to take the reins at Macarthur FC," Yorke said in a statement on the club's website. The role will be the 50-year-old former Trinidad and Tobago international's first as a head coach and comes 16 years after he played for Sydney FC in the A-League's inaugurual season.

Yorke will also coach the A-League All Stars in a friendly against Spanish giants Barcelona at Sydney’s Accor Stadium on 25 May. “Having played in the inaugural A-League Men’s season I have continually followed the competition and am aware of both the footballing and fan demands in Australia,” Yorke said. Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has been confirmed as the new head coach of A-League Men’s club Macarthur FC.
