2022 PGA Championship predictions, favorites: Ranking the field ... (CBSSports.com)

The top of this field looks a lot like the top of the Official World Golf Rankings.

19. Max Homa (T64 in 2013): Homa has not been good at major championships to this point in his career, but he's also not been as good at any point in his career as he is right now. 22. Keegan Bradley (Won in 2011): The winner of the PGA at Atlanta Athletic Club is having a tremendous year with more top fives than he's had since the 2017-18 PGA Tour season. 18. Sam Burns (T29 in 2019): He might be the least talked about young American star (as defined by his rise into the top 10 in the world) of the last 20 years. 13. Viktor Hovland (T30 in 2021): Hovland leads the field in strokes gained ball-striking in his last 20 rounds, but there's a potentially fatal flaw as it relates to his game, specifically on this golf course. On the third hand (if you have a third hand), he also missed the cut at the Masters and withdrew from the AT&T Byron Nelson last week. He's made the cut in four of his last six and all four have resulted in top 10 finishes, including last year's PGA where he notched a top 10 behind Mickelson and Brooks Koepka at the top. On one hand, he absolutely destroys worlds at majors (15 top 10s in his last 25 majors). On the other hand, he's been a worse ball-striker than Seamus Power, Hudson Swafford and Kevin Streelman over his last 20 rounds. After winning The Open Championship in 2019, I thought he was a one-and-done major winner, but it's clear that he's going to mix it up at a few more as he ages into his late 30s and could end up winning at least one more before he finishes his career. 1. Scottie Scheffler (Best finish -- T4 in 2020): Scheffler has quietly become a major championship threat, and that has less to do with his Masters win in April and more to do with how he's played at the four biggest events since 2020. If this golf course does play like Augusta National, as has been insinuated this week, then McIlroy should thrive (he's been unbelievable there), and the two things I'm most interested in are his start (see below) and how his short game (tremendous this season) holds up at Southern Hills. It could be one of the sneaky interesting parts of this week if he's in contention. The first is that playing well at the first major of the year speaks to the kind of shape your overall game is in, and the second is that Southern Hills is being talked about as a facsimile for Augusta National in terms of how it's going to play. I have some mild concerns about his accuracy off the tee and some serious ones about his ability to cash in with the putter, but this is the perfect golf course for him to go dominate for four straight days.

Just three of the last 11 PGA Championships have been won by non-Americans, and two of those were by Northern Ireland’s McIlroy (2012 and 2014). FRACAS only gives him a 0.5% chance of victory here, however. Just two par-five holes are in use this weekend, although the course will play about 300 yards longer than it did in 2007 when Tiger Woods took the crown – something that will produce a unique challenge for some of the world’s best golfers. FRACAS had three of the top-four finishers at the Masters 2022 in our top-nine picks for the victory back in April, with Scheffler the seventh favorite before teeing off (3.6%). Our FRACAS model has Jon Rahm as the favorite with a 7.4% chance of winning at Southern Hills. His only previous major victory came in last year’s U.S. Open, but he’s previously had two top-eight finishes at the PGA Championship – tied for fourth in 2018 and tied for eighth in 2021. The 2022 PGA Championship will be the 104th edition, this year being held at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s the second major championship of the year following the Masters in April.

PGA Championship 2022: Tiger's humblebrag, Koepka's Beergate ... (GolfDigest.com)

TULSA — Tuesday serves as car wash day at the PGA Championship, with player after player paraded through the interview area at Southern Hills.

Figured the first mountain you climbed was Everest. That's the steepest golf course you're going to play and that was the first one you climbed it, and climbed. Woods was asked if he was able to continue training following the Masters or if he needed a lull to recover. That is golf’s version of the Wayne Gretzky/Michael Jordan/Michael Scott “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take” quote. “For any athlete, the only point of contact we have with the ground is our feet, so I think that should be the single most important thing.” Still, to give a thoughtful answer that includes an endorsement plug has to make his agent proud. “That was it. “I think there are shots that you have to hit to win golf tournaments, and sometimes they just don't work out. I think I can keep that speed up first tee shot on Thursday to the last one on Sunday a little bit more consistently. “I couldn't give you a timeline but it definitely took through college,” Thomas said. I've done some great work with Equator and the Travis Matthew team, and I think it's allowed me to be a little bit more stable and up my ball speed and my swing speed without being concerned. While there is a lot to unpack from that U-Haul, Rory McIlroy gave the most empathetic response. Jon Rahm leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained/tee-to-green, which shouldn’t be a surprise since he led the category last year and was third the season before. I mean, it's bigger than the normal 12 ounces, 16 ounces,” Koepka said.

What I learned watching Tiger Woods practice at the PGA ... (Golf.com)

Tiger Woods spent the first 20 minutes of his day on Tuesday hitting wedges. It was a revealing look into the master's craft.

He seemed to size up a target with his eye, hit a couple of shots to it, see how close he finished to it, then start again at a new target. For this, Tiger would take aim at one target, and then practice shots with a variety of different trajectories. A man still set on mastering his craft in each and every moment. Tiger wasn’t just warming up his body; he was using his range session to set a pace and rhythm for the day. At 10:09 — about five minutes after he started — Tiger pulled out his 56 degree wedge and started practicing a variety of different shots from inside 100 yards. He chatted with his team and Jason Day, who was hitting balls next to him.

PGA Championship 2022: Somehow the most-viewed PGA ... (GolfDigest.com)

PGA Championship 2022: Somehow the most-viewed PGA Championship clip on YouTube does NOT involve Tiger Woods (or bunkergate).

Nicklaus' famous 102-foot putt in Miller's grill came during the opening event at Habor Shores in Michigan, a Nicklaus design that is set to host its fifth Senior PGA Championship at the end of May, hence the PGA tie-in: DJ's bunkergate is way down at No. 9 with just 743,000 views, while Mickelson's walk up the 72nd hole at Kiawah Island last year is seventh with just over a million views. That designation, surprisingly, belongs to Rory McIlroy's win in the darkness at Valhalla in 2014, as first pointed out by the Online Betting Guide, a sports betting community website that went back and ranked the most-viewed PGA moments on YouTube. CBS also did a great job of capturing all the sights and sounds and reactions of everyone involved in this moment (Mickelson was clearly miffed), which added to its magnitude. In addition to the fact that people LOVE any sort of "race-to-beat-the-darkness" content ( SEE: Poulter, Ian. Players Championship), the other reason this moment may have exploded on YouTube is because it featured, at the time (and possibly still now), three of the most-recognizable faces in the sport - McIlroy, Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, all of whom had a legitimate shot to win the PGA Championship on the 72nd hole. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of major championship weeks are all about setting the mood.

The year's second major gets under way late on Thursday with Cameron Smith the pick of the Australians as he chases a maiden triumph in Oklahoma.

Day is not in the greatest form, however, missing out on the Masters and failing to make the cut at The Players, Valspar Championship and Texas Open of late. The first group, featuring John Daly, Shaun Micheel and YE Yang gets under way at 11pm Thursday. Davis is the first Australian to begin his campaign, alongside Rikuya Hoshino and Matt Kuchar at 11.55pm. Smith, playing with Viktor Hovland and Will Zalatoris, follows at midnight. The 2020 Masters runner-up has never finished better than tied 25th (in 2015, the year of Jason Day’s win). He looked to be in spectacular touch heading to Augusta this year off the back of his lucrative Players’ Championship win in March and was well in the hunt before disaster struck on the 12th in his final round. He bounced back at the Wells Fargo to finish tied 15th earlier this month after a tied 10th at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Omen punters – Tiger Woods won the last PGA Championship at the course, back in 2007. Mickelson has found himself embroiled in the controversy over Greg Norman’s Saudi Arabia-funded LIV Golf Series, skipped last month’s Masters and hasn’t played an event since February.

2022 PGA Championship picks, odds: Expert predictions, favorites ... (CBSSports.com)

Who will win the 104th PGA Championship? Our experts dive into all the twists and turns of the year's second major.

He ranks first on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained off the tee, which should serve him well at Southern Hills, and he should be in the mix down to the end if the other nuances of his game come together. He turned in matching 75s and missed the cut at Augusta, and after that showing, it wouldn't be surprising to see him again this week eject before the weekend. He's said in the past that Southern Hills is one of his favorite courses, and it sets up well for him this week. Since 2018, he has missed the cut in four of eight major appearances when removing his play at Augusta. Southern Hills is going to be a stern examination and I'm not sure Woods will convert enough momentum-saving pars to pass the test. Sleeper -- Jason Day (70-1): It's been a rollercoaster season for 34-year-old Day, but he enters the week having played some really strong golf of late with two top-15 finishes in his last three outings. The key will be his putter -- as it so often is -- but these bent grass greens should be to his liking. Top 10 lock -- Dustin Johnson: I honestly like him to win, but Johnson will be the name at the top odds board, which will drift as the week progresses. Star who definitely won't win -- Viktor Hovland: The term "star" implies a top-10 player in the world, and Hovland is the one I'll be picking on. Tiger Woods prediction -- Slightly better than Augusta National: Big Cat created the bar at this year's Masters when he made the cut and finished in the top 50, and now that's what will (rightly) be expected going forward. Lowry has been a top-five ball-striker so far in 2022 (Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Will Zalatoris and Justin Thomas are the other four), and he's an elite iron player with a tremendous short game who played quite well at the Masters. The only thing not to like is that he's not often talked about as a star or superstar of the sport. Surprise prediction -- Spieth's putter costs him: This won't be surprising to those who have been paying attention for the last few months, but if you haven't, you might be surprised to find out that Spieth is not a good putter right now. Top 10 lock -- Rory McIlroy: McIlroy is playing great from tee to green, but it's actually his touch around the greens that has caught my attention.

DAZN subscribers can watch every single Premier League game in 2021/22 – and it gets better. If you pick up a fuboTV subscription for the games not on Peacock Premium, you'll be able to watch every game. To get around that, all you have to do is get a Virtual Private Network (VPN), assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and t'internet, meaning the service can’t work out where you are and won't automatically block the service you've paid for. Keinan Davis came off the bench on Saturday, but it could be too early for the loanee strike to start after a hamstring issue. Sheffield United still have a tough task in front of them, but a fast start on Tuesday could see the home crowd get nervy. Forest, in truth, could have scored more than twice at Bramall Lane - and they were made to pay for their profligacy when Sander Berge halved the deficit in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

Who can win? Who has the best betting value? What props are the most interesting? Our experts look at the PGA Championship from all angles.

Fallica: Thomas has been tabbed by many to have won a second major by now, but it just hasn't happened. McIlroy also is +300 for a top-5 finish, if you really want to roll the dice. I don't expect a win or a top-10 finish, but -140 to be in top 70 should be good enough. Our betting experts have more than just bets to win. I wouldn't be shocked if this dipped a bit further to 16-1. His iron play gives him a chance to win on any type of course, and he ranks in the top nine in GIR in each of his past five majors. McIlroy had an incredible Sunday at Augusta last month, but Thomas has better approach stats and has been more consistent all season. He ranks third in greens in regulation (GIR) and is a tremendous putter. Our betting experts give you picks to win based on value. Who will win the 2022 PGA Championship, which long shots will stun the golfing world, and where will Tiger Woods finish? Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2022 PGA Championship leaderboard. McIlroy has finished outside the top 20 in five of his last six starts at the PGA Championship and his wedge play could be particularly damaging at Southern Hills. McIlroy ranks 209th in proximity to the hole on shots between 50 and 125 yards this season. According to the latest 2022 PGA Championship odds from Caesars Sportsbook, Woods is 50-1 to finish on top of the leaderboard. However, McIlroy hasn't won a major in nearly eight years after winning four before his 26th birthday, while the PGA Championship setups haven't seemed to favor his game in recent years. Fifteen former PGA Champions will play in the 2022 PGA Championship, which gets underway from Southern Hills Country Club on Thursday. Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa are among the former champions set to tee it up in the second major of the year.

TULSA, Okla. -- Somehow, one of the biggest stories of the 2022 PGA Championship centers around somebody who's not even playing this week.

I think he should be here this week and celebrating what a monumental achievement he achieved last year. It was one of the great moments in golf, and we'll never sort of forget it. There's something bigger at play, whether it's a holdout until the LIV Golf series starts, a game that's nowhere near the level it needs to be at for major championship contention or something even more obscure. Rory McIlroy summed it up well, as he often does, when he was asked about the man he defeated at the 2014 PGA at Valhalla. "This should be a celebration, right? There has even been speculation that Mickelson might never play a major championship or PGA Tour event again. He's the most-discussed golfer at this PGA Championship for a couple of reasons, and they are related. You have to go out there and earn it. You've got to go out there and play for it. Obviously we're going to have difference of opinions, how he sees the Tour, and we'll go from there" TULSA, Okla. -- Somehow, one of the biggest stories of the 2022 PGA Championship centers around somebody who's not even playing this week. But as we all know, as a professional, we miss him being out here.

PGA Championship 2022 - From Tiger Woods to Scottie Scheffler ... (ESPN)

Can Scheffler do it again? Will Tiger contend? Who else should we be paying attention to? We answer all the big questions for the PGA Championship.

Smith and Scheffler are the only two players this season with multiple wins and a top-10 finish at the Masters, so I'm going with Smith. Cam Smith has been playing well as of late, but has never finished in the top 20 at a PGA Championship. Smith leads the PGA Tour this season in birdie average at 5.38 per round, though, so if he can continue that pace, he should have a shot. If the putter is working, Thomas should be right there at the top of the leaderboard. However, it's still very much a course you need to be in the right spot off the tee with the driver. Rahm's game is built to win at any course, though, and Southern Hills could be where he steps back into the spotlight. If he were to win, he'd be just the 10th player to win each of the first two majors of the calendar year, so that tells you how rare of a feat it is. Schlabach: I think you've got to have all the tools: distance and length off the tee, precision on approach shots, creativity around the greens and a consistent putter. He has called it one of his favorite courses in the world, and he has some experience here from playing at the University of Texas. The odds are that Scheffler won't win again. It would also give Scheffler five wins on the season, and no player has had five wins in a season by the end of May since Tom Watson did in 1980. Schlabach: I'd be surprised if he's not in contention for the Wanamaker Trophy. He came up to Southern Hills a couple of weeks ago and shot 6-under 64 in a practice round. VanHaaren: Tiger won the PGA Championship on this course in 2007, but this is a different Tiger Woods. I'm not expecting a ton from him this week. Even if expectations have to be restrained now, it doesn't mean there should be much doubt that he will always be capable of getting in the mix.

Tyrrell Hatton (+225 for a Top 20) … In the numbers game of the Power Rankings, he just missed. However, his back also thwarted his title defense at Pebble Beach in February. Of course, in between those episodes, he went 5-for-5 with a solo fourth at PGA National headlining a trio of top 25s. Dustin Johnson (+110 for a Top 20) … In his first start as a married man, he finished T59 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, but there’s nothing to read into there, gang. Louis Oosthuizen … This is his first live action since he pulled out of the Masters before his second round with a sore back. One of the best around the greens and currently leading the PGA TOUR in par-3 scoring, a handy weapon in the winds. Shane Lowry (+125 for a Top 20) … This is a major, so it’s only rightful that he’s an extension of the Power Rankings proper. He was slated to play the Mexico Open at Vidanta but withdrew early due to a sore back. Brian Harman (+450 for a Top 20) … Keeps on keepin’ on. 2022 PGA Championship picks, predictions, odds: Five sleepers ... (CBSSports.com)

Keegan Bradley in 2011, Jimmy Walker in 2016 ... even last year at Kiawah Island, Phil Mickelson was hardly on anyone's radar -- and if someone says otherwise, ...

Over the last three months, Woodland ranks inside the top 20 of this PGA Championship field in strokes gained tee to green, strokes gained approach and strokes gained around the green. His statistical profile is awfully similar to that of Bradley, and most forget he shared the 54-hole lead with Louis Oosthuizen and Mackenzie Hughes in last year's U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. He has struggled to seal the deal in recent memory, so he'll likely need to post a low one on Sunday, sit on the clubhouse lead and watch the leaders melt in the heat of battle. Bradley arrives at Southern Hills with four top-10 finishes in his last six starts, including a solo fifth in the strongest field of the year at the Players Championship. He's confident, and the putter is starting to become a friend once again. Bradley remains the last player to win in his major championship debut as he proved victorious in a playoff at the Atlantic Athletic Club over Jason Dufner 11 years ago. Historically strong with the putter in hand, Young has run into a speed bump on the greens the last month, but if that club comes around in Tulsa, Young should find his name on the first page of the leaderboard. The PGA Tour rookie is now up to No. 38 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Casual golf fans may not know his name, but they will soon as he continues to contend on a weekly basis.

2022 PGA Championship predictions, picks, favorites: One of these ... (CBSSports.com)

Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are all playing tremendous golf as they seek the Wanamaker Trophy.

J.T. seems to work himself into the type of trouble at major championships that's easily prevented, and if he can avoid that for the first few days, it could be lights out on the weekend. He has the ability to absolutely dissect this golf course with his iron play in a way that only a handful of players in the world possibly can. The last of the world class droppers of a ball into a silo from preposterous heights. If the PGA was played with everybody dropping a ball in the fairway to start a hole, Smith would probably win going away. Most curious to me is that he's been the best player in this field in gaining strokes around the greens since the start of the year. He won in his last start in Mexico, but the only consistent part of his game so far this year has been off the tee. He's coming off a T3 at the Masters and another one at the RBC Heritage, and he's playing nearly as well as Scheffler over his last handful of events. Scheffler has a lot of things going for him this week, but the most important one is that he's marrying great iron play with the confidence that he can get up and down from anywhere in the yard. "One of the things I loved is the way they've cut the runoffs," said McIlroy. "It's very hard to putt from off the greens. The fairways are wide, the greens are menacing, and you're going to have to pull off some laugh-out-loud shots around the greens to win the tournament, which is more or less what Spieth has built his already-hall-of-fame-worthy career around. This isn't true, of course, but it feels true, which makes it a pseudo-reality until the first round leaderboard starts to take shape. So, let's take a look at the group and why the champion on Sunday will come from out of these nine players.

PGA Championship 2022: Jordan Spieth aims to accomplish golf ... (CBSSports.com)

The three-time major winner has a new target as he takes his best swing at the slam yet.

For you, it might be dreams of what it feels like to break 90 or perhaps what it feels like to make your first eagle or what you would do if you won your state amateur championship. Golf is not war, of course, but the primal emotion of Spieth opening up the engines this weekend with that Oklahoma wind peppering the leaderboard might, for a brief instant, feel like an acceptable facsimile. There's also a singular desire to take this week's PGA and finish off one of the most amazing first decade to a career in the last 25 years. He might even dream about captaining a Ryder Cup team or two or hitting the ceremonial shot one day at Augusta National. I think just more look at the long term, how many chances you're going to get, and maybe the ... bounces will go your way one of those weeks. "[I've] come close a couple times," said Spieth, whose best chance came back in 2015 when he finished second to Jason Day despite gaining 18.4 strokes on the field, which is an amount that's normally enough to win a major. Golf is the most romantic but also the most accessible of all the sports, and that marriage makes it extraordinarily easy for anyone to slip into that fantasyland where desire and desperation often meet. So, you feel like you kind of accomplished golf when you win a career grand slam, I guess." Byron Nelson never won the Open Championship. Rory McIlroy is 0-8 at the Masters since winning the Open and PGA consecutively in 2014. Spieth is the rare professional who seems transfixed by the romanticism of golf. Every major requires a different skillset, and it's rare to possess them all. Part of this is because he's made well over nine figures on and off the course throughout his career and will probably approach a 10-figure number by the time his career is over.
