How to Watch the 2022 NBA Draft Lottery (Blazer's Edge)

The Blazers owned the sixth-worst record in the league this year, placing them almost in the middle of the 14 teams vying for the top draft spots. The fortunes ...

Damian Lillard will be in attendance as the public representative for the franchise, a “good luck” charm. If we get past the 6th position and don’t see Portland’s logo, the Blazers have a Top 4 selection. Wherever the Blazers would appear—most likely 6th, 7th, 8th, depending on the number of teams skipped before them—root for their logo to NOT be revealed. The odds of Portland getting the 7th or 8th spots are the same as the odds for one or two teams behind Portland in the order moving ahead of them, thus bumping them down a slot or two. As the picks are revealed, Blazers fans want to see no changes in the order until Portland’s spot comes. Teams rising from below also guarantee that, if the Blazers don’t get promoted, they’ll be bumped down another spot in the order. At the start, that’ll be the 6th position. If they don’t move up, there will be at least one team remaining with a worse record in front of them for the “rest of” seeding process. This is one of the closer security matters the league deals with. The odds of someone behind Portland moving up are greater than the odds of nobody doing so. After that, the remaining ten teams will be seeded in reverse order of their regular-season records. If Portland moves up, it has to be one of the four positions drawn for.

They made a clear push to change that last season by trading Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield to the Indiana Pacers for Domantas Sabonis. It didn't work last season, but adding another top-four pick might help them finally get back to the playoffs in the future. Most notably, the Sacramento Kings, who had the seventh-worst record in the league last season, jumped up to the No. 4 overall pick. They had two lottery picks last season in Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner, the latter of which is almost certainly going to be on the All-Rookie Team. "There's so much to look forward to. The only guard widely believed to be in the running for the top selection is Purdue point guard Jaden Ivey, an elite athlete who impressed on college basketball's biggest stage in March. NBA Draft Lottery: Damian Lillard's face says it all, as Blazers face ... (CBSSports.com)

The Blazers fell in the lottery, only adding to the uncertainty of Lillard's future with the franchise.

There are plenty of contenders (and the superstars who play for them) who would happily trade for Lillard, and the Blazers will likely fetch a better haul if they don't wait until a trade demand crushes any leverage they might have. First, a late-season surge by the Pelicans -- ironically thanks in large part to McCollum -- caused the Blazers to lose out on New Orleans' 2022 first-round pick, which was considered to be a key piece of the trade. Not only did the Blazers fail to jump into the top four -- they actually dropped a spot. When the time for the seventh selection came, however, NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum uttered the dreadful words that Lillard and the city of Portland didn't want to hear. Boasting a lineup chocked full of fringe NBA players and G Leaguers, Portland went just 2-21 after the All-Star break -- yes, they won TWO games in almost two months -- in an effort to land a lofty draft pick to use on a promising prospect or to sweeten a potential deal for win-now help. The fact that Damian Lillard showed up as the Portland Trail Blazers' representative at Tuesday night's NBA Draft Lottery in Chicago tells you just how important this night was for the franchise.

'Pivotal moment' for Giddey's Thunder; 'wasted' year of tanking: NBA Lottery winners and losers.

As the cameras panned to Sabonis – his smile said it all. After a season of tanking that many are now describing as “wasted,” the Detroit Pistons were left devastated after falling into the fifth spot of the NBA draft lottery. After receiving the good fortunes of a number one pick last season, it was Detroit who would now have to suffer, falling back to fifth overall on the draft lottery shortlist. Oklahoma City were touted to receive the 4th and 12th as their major pick slots entering the lottery, but will now benefit from a piece of the big three with the 2nd overall pick. A franchise with a great track record as overall number one pick winners, Orlando rejoiced at their lottery jackpot – as fans reminisced about the glory days of selecting NBA legends Shaquille O’Neale (1992) and Dwight Howard (2004) in the number one slot. However, after a season of tanking that many are now describing as “wasted,” the Detroit Pistons were left devastated after falling into the fifth spot.

We have officially entered NBA Draft season. The NBA Draft Combine is underway in Chicago, and tonight, we'll find out the order for next month's NBA Draft ...

But Detroit still has other business to handle at this week’s combine. •7h ago •7h ago The way the lottery shakes out will have the biggest influence on who goes No. 1. •7h ago He moves naturally and mechanically like an NBA wing and elevates over the top for shots. Quick reminder before the NBA Draft Lottery commences: Several teams will not have a first-round pick. Houston's evaluators have already done some groundwork, but this week's combine will go a long way towards whittling down their Big Board. Expect all sorts of superstitious behavior from Houston today. The shots just didn’t fall this year like they sometimes don’t for teenagers over small samples. It is much more of an eye-of-the-beholder situation, where different evaluators have drastically different takes. Toronto used that pick to select Florida State's Scottie Barnes, who would go on to win Rookie of the Year.

Behind the Scenes of the 2022 NBA Draft Lottery (Sports Illustrated)

For nearly four decades the lottery has been a big night on the NBA calendar. Here is how it all went down last night.

To preserve the integrity of the broadcast, no one is allowed to leave the room. It has been 16 years since the Kings last playoff experience—most of the players in this year’s draft are too young to remember it—which happened to be the last season Sacramento finished above .500. There are some solid pieces in Sacto. De’Aaron Fox still has All-Star potential and Domantas Sabonis was acquired last season to provide some muscle alongside him. For one night, a dozen non-playoff teams (sorry Lakers, Clippers) have hope for the future. Presti’s last trip to the drawing room was in 2009, when the Thunder jumped up one spot, positioning the team to draft a dynamic guard from Arizona State named James Harden. This time around, Oklahoma City jumped from fourth to second, guaranteeing the Thunder, which added Josh Giddey to a growing young core last season, another blue chip prospect. But the Kings need a star and GM Monte McNair, who is in the final year of his contract, may not get a better chance to nab one. And Houston still has to figure out what to do with John Wall. Rockets GM Rafael Stone hinted that the team would entertain offers for the pick—one exec said he sees the draft as eight-deep, with no clear No. 1—but if not it will be critical to add the right piece to this mix. In the hours before the lottery the Rockets canned several members of Stephen Silas’s coaching staff (Silas was on board with the decision, a source told SI). Jalen Green, the second overall pick last season, proved he could score, but needs polish. It has evolved since then, from envelopes to ping pong balls, weighted odds to flatter ones, but for nearly four decades the lottery has been a big night on the NBA calendar. The last, he recalled, was in 2017, when the Magic came away with the sixth pick, which they used on Jonathan Isaac. From a backpack Glass pulled out ping pong balls from Orlando’s most successful lottery trips: 1992, when the Magic won the right to draft Shaquille O’Neal, ’93 when Orlando, picking first again, swapped Chris Webber for Anfernee Hardaway, and ’04, when lottery luck allowed them to draft Dwight Howard. As Glass, eager for another souvenir, eyeballed the ping pong balls in the case, Sheppard wrapped an arm around him. This wasn’t Glass’s first time in the drawing room. The NBA draft lottery has been around since 1985, back when David Stern, annoyed at a handful of teams openly losing to secure a better place in the draft order, pushed through a new system. It's just after 5:30 CT when the doors to the drawing room, located this year inside the McCormack Place Convention Center are flung open.

Consensus Mock Draft: Top 3 far from clear in first look after Draft ... (NBA.com)

In the first post-Lottery update there doesn't seem to be much consensus, with Jabari Smith and Chet Holmgren as top options at No. 1.

The 6-foot-8 forward out of Iowa appears as high as No. 4 (ESPN/Net Scouts), but no lower than No. 8 (SB Nation). His most likely landing spots are the Pistons at No. 5 or Pacers at No. 6. Position: G/F Athletic wing who can make a difference on both ends, with finishes around the rim and a reliable jump shot. For example, Jabari Smith is projected to go 1st in seven of the 12 mock drafts listed below. The player with the highest point total represents the top overall selection, which is as follows: - Unlike previous seasons, there’s not a single player in our lottery that is coming straight from international play. Ivey is an athletic point guard and the Pistons would be thrilled if he slips to them at No. 5. It’s possible teams are waiting to see more on the talented shooter. There isn’t a consensus No. 1 pick like there’s been in past years (every mock had Cade Cunningham going first last season) and up and down the lottery there is much variation. We bring them together to provide a solid estimate of how the Draft could play out (Last update: May 19, 3:04 a.m. ET): The pick here would likely be Jaden Ivey if he’s available, but the Kings are pretty set in their backcourt with DeAaron Fox and Davion Mitchell, whom they took last season with the No. 9 pick. - In our first look at the best mock drafts around the internet, the theme seems to be uncertainty.
