Taylor Swift "wore a cap and gown for the first time" during her commencement address at New York University's graduation ceremony.

Cringe is unavoidable over the course of a lifetime. The Grammy winner also quipped that she was only there because one of her 2012 hit single 22. You can't avoid it so don't try to – for the entirety of 2012 I dressed like a 1950s housewife." This outfit is much more comfortable." The Love Story hitmaker also spoke about the challenges of being a young woman in the music industry, such as "constantly being issued warnings" and how she felt she needed to be the "perfect young female role model" or else she would end up in "pop star jail". The singer-songwriter, 32, marked the occasion on her Instagram, writing, "Wearing a cap and gown for the very first time - see you soon NYU" in the caption of a video showing her getting ready in her purple cap and gown and getting her picture taken by her father, Scott Swift.

Times when the right thing is to fight, times when the right thing is to turn and run. The people who wanted it the least were the ones I wanted to date and be friends with in high school. Having the world treat my love life like a spectator sport in which I lose every single game was not a great way to date in my teens and twenties, but it taught me to protect my private life fiercely. What I mean by that is, knowing what things to keep, and what things to release. The times I was told no or wasn’t included, wasn’t chosen, didn’t win, didn’t make the cut…looking back, it really feels like those moments were as important, if not more crucial, than the moments I was told “yes.” Not being invited to the parties and sleepovers in my hometown made me feel hopelessly lonely, but because I felt alone, I would sit in my room and write the songs that would get me a ticket somewhere else. I guess I have been officially solicited in this situation, to impart whatever wisdom I might have and tell you the things that helped me in my life so far. Not the type of doctor you would want around in the case of an emergency, unless your specific emergency was that you desperately needed to hear a song with a catchy hook and an intensely cathartic bridge section. Then I went out on the road on a radio tour, which sounds incredibly glamorous but in reality it consisted of a rental car, motels, and my mom and I pretending to have loud mother-daughter fights with each other during boarding so no one would want the empty seat between us on Southwest. If they are here in this stadium, I hope you’ll find your own way to express your gratitude for all the steps and missteps that have led us to this common destination. We are each a patchwork quilt of those who have loved us, those who have believed in our futures, those who showed us empathy and kindness or told us the truth even when it wasn’t easy to hear. As for me, I’m…90% sure the main reason I’m here is because I have a song called ‘22’. And let me just say, I am elated to be here with you today as we celebrate and graduate New York University’s Class of 2022. I’d like to say a huge thank you to NYU‘s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bill Berkeley and all the trustees and members of the board, NYU’s President Andrew Hamilton, Provost Katherine Fleming, and the faculty and alumni here today who have made this day possible.

Taylor Swift Just Got Super Real About The “Price” She Paid For ... (BuzzFeed News)

"Being publicly humiliated over and over again at a young age was excruciatingly painful."

“I was a teenager in the public eye at a time when our society was absolutely obsessed with the idea of having perfect young female role models,” she explained. NYU previously said in a press release: “Taylor Swift is a trailblazing and influential advocate for artists’ rights in the face of exploitation and a forceful global advocate against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.” “But it forced me to devalue the ridiculous notion of minute-by-minute, ever-fluctuating social relevance and likability.” “I’m trying to tell you that losing things doesn’t just mean losing. Speaking to MTV way back in 2008, the singer said: “College, to me, I always thought I was going to go. Both my parents went to college, so I thought that's what I was going to do, but life took a different turn.

Who Said It: Taylor Swift or a Fortune Cookie? (The Cut)

On Thursday, Taylor Swift became a doctor (the scholarly kind) and delivered a 23-minute commencement speech to NYU's Class of 2022.

Are these rejected Taylor Swift lyrics? And even though I would have accepted a Taylor Swift cover of “Graduation (Friends Forever),” it was nice to hear the sage, sisterly advice she offered the crowd of graduates. Are they promotions for aspirational pillows Taylor is selling on Etsy? Maybe they’re fortune-cookie messages.

“It’s a combination of William, my great grandfather who I never actually met—was a composer and wrote a lot of classical music and he wrote a lot of film scores. “I did it under the name William Bowery,” he said. This was the first time we had a conversation where I came in and I was like, ‘Hey, this could be really weird and we could hate this, so could we just, because we’re in quarantine and there’s nothing else going on, could we just try to see what it’s like if we write this song together?'”
