“When I saw some footage, I understood that this is the future. But this is where we’re going,” he said. “Vangelis Papathanassiou is no longer with us,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis tweeted.
The law firm representing Vangelis said he died late on Tuesday, without giving a cause of death.
Despite enjoying success in the European “prog rock” scene of the early 1970s with Aphrodite’s Child, a band he formed with fellow Greek musician Demis Roussos, Vangelis was uncomfortable with the expectations on a commercial performing artist and largely retreated to the recording studio in London. “Ad astra, Vangelis” - Latin for “to the stars” — tweeted Nasa, saying Vangelis contributed scores to its explorations to Jupiter. In a post on Twitter, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called Vangelis “a pioneer of the electronic sound”.

“I made up the name Mythodea from the words myth and ode,” Vangelis said in an interview for NASA’s website in 2001. “And I felt in it a kind of shared or common path with NASA’s current exploration of the planet. “I try to put myself in the situation and feel it,” he told The Washington Post in 1981. In the 1970s he began composing music for television shows like the French documentary series “L’Apocalypse des Animaux” (1973), as well as working on solo albums and film projects. For “Blade Runner,” a science-fiction film noir set in a futuristic Los Angeles, Vangelis created a score to match the director Ridley Scott’s dystopian vision. The “Blade Runner” soundtrack album was not released until 1994, but it was well received.

The theme, released as a single, reached the top of American Billboard Hot 100 chart, and has been used in countless sports presentations since, including the London 2012 Olympics ceremonies. Vangelis would go on to compose scores for Blade Runner (1982), Missing, Antarctica, The Bounty, 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Alexander, among many other recording projects, but would forever be most closely associated with the Chariots anthem.
