Epic acquired online music platform Bandcamp, which has used its own billing system on Android since 2015, in March. Bandcamp was threatened with being booted from the Google Play Store if it didn't begin using Google's proprietary billing system by June 1. In the original complaint, Match claimed Google holding it "hostage,” while Google responded that it charges for services "like any business," and that its commission is the "lowest rate among major app platforms." Google is allowing some Android apps to use their own payment systems after getting into battles with both Match Group and Epic Games' Bandcamp, but the move might be temporary.

Regardless of the outcome in the Epic Games and Google case, it highlights the entrenched problems of a consolidated music ecosystem. But the judge also urged Google to act in good faith and delay the update until the case goes to trial next year. As Google has cracked down on Play Store billing for Android apps, Epic has filed with court regarding the potential removal of Bandcamp.

Under an agreement encouraged by the court, Bandcamp will continue to operate using our existing payment system on Android devices. Despite their claims, Android’s openness means that Bandcamp has multiple ways of distributing their app to Android users, including through other app stores, directly to users via their website or as a consumption-only app as they do on iOS. We’ve beentransparentabout Play’s Payment policy for more than 18 months and, as Epic knows, Bandcamp is eligible for a service fee of just 10% through Play’s Media Experience Program—far less than the fees they charge on their own platforms. Google considers Epic’s claim as “meritless” and points out that the 10% fee Bandcamp is eligible for is actually less than the service charges its own users. Epic noted in an email to 9to5Google that this billing is only for physical goods sold through the platform, and is not a part of Apple’s “reader” policy introduced last month. However, Google has tightened its billing rules over the past year and, starting June 1, Bandcamp and apps like it would be required to pay Google’s 30% cut on in-app sales.

The agreement allowed Match to drop a request for a temporary restraining order that would've prevented Google from removing Match's apps from the Play Store. Earlier this month in a lawsuit, Match accused Google of forcing it to use Google Play's billing system and pay royalties as a result. Match also cited data privacy as a concern, arguing that using Google Play Billing gives the search giant additional data on users that could be sold. The agreement will let users of Match apps select the payment system of their choosing rather than be required to use Google Play Billing, the app store's homegrown system, Match said in a statement.
