Kylian Mbappe Reveals He's Staying at PSG, Snubbing Real Madrid ... (Sports Illustrated)

The French superstar isn't going anywhere after all, spurning a long-expected move to Real Madrid to stay put.

PSG’s offer was strong enough for Mbappé to spurn a move to the club he has reportedly longed to play for since he was a boy. Mbappé, meanwhile, stays at PSG and continues to team with Lionel Messi and Neymar in the most star-studded attacking trident on the planet. On the club level, he won a Ligue 1 title with Monaco and then four more with PSG, while also capturing seven other domestic trophies. ... This summer my ambition was clear, I wanted to leave and put the club in the best circumstances to bring in my replacement.” The decision is the culmination of a yearlong process that nearly took a drastic turn last summer, when Madrid tried to pry Mbappé from PSG during the transfer window. Mbappé confirmed that he had asked for a transfer despite his contract having a year to run, but he could have signed a pre-contract with Real Madrid as early as Jan. 1 had he wanted to fully commit.

Kylian Mbappé Will Stay at P.S.G., Rejecting Real Madrid (The New York Times)

Paris St.-Germain has convinced Kylian Mbappé to sign a new contract, one of the richest in soccer history, that will keep the French striker at the club ...

But unlike Haaland, whose contract had to be acquired by Manchester City for an eight-figure transfer fee, Mbappé’s expiring contract in Paris made him a free agent, effectively able to choose from among the highest bidders for his prodigious talents. Amid an economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, few teams but the wealthiest elite have been able to make the type of marquee signings that were once a staple of every soccer off-season. Real Madrid’s worst fears were confirmed on Saturday, when Pérez, in Belgrade to follow Real Madrid’s basketball team in a European final, received a message telling him Mbappé had decided to stay at P.S.G. For Mbappé, the deal comes amid major efforts to build his brand away from the field. But Mbappé had made no secret of his desire to move to Real Madrid from P.S.G., and the Spanish powerhouse went all out to recruit him. P.S.G.’s success in persuading Mbappé to stay is the latest sign that the dominance of global soccer that once rested in the hands of legacy clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United has now shifted to a few deep-pocketed, Gulf-backed teams. P.S.G.’s strategy of bringing the most exciting talents, whatever the cost, has had mixed results. Mbappé picked the one that will keep him in Paris. Its offer included a signing bonus of almost $140 million, a net salary of more than $26 million every season and complete control over his image rights. Mbappé informed Real Madrid earlier Saturday that he would not be coming. But P.S.G., the perennial French champion that is bankrolled by gas-rich Qatar, prevented him from leaving as a free agent by offering even better terms. The saga surrounding Mbappé’s future had gripped France, and was considered a matter of such national importance that last month the French president Emmanuel Macron told a news conference he would do whatever he could to keep Mbappé, considered a national treasure, in the country.

Politically and financially, Real Madrid and Barcelona were for so long the top dogs in European football. Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski or a sensational return for Ronaldo could all quickly move to the top of his agenda. But the longer term is where Real Madrid will surely feel the loss. This was at least a preview, they thought, of the player that would soon belong to them. In the short-term, Madrid will cope. And few would say Real's weakness is their attack.

He is a voracious goal-scorer and the player expected to dominate the sport for years to come. They need to build a collective." Could PSG look to offload both as they make Mbappe the undisputed figurehead of their project? There is arguably no more thrilling sight in modern football than Mbappe running at full speed at an opposition defence. "I always said that Paris was my home. This season's defeat in the last 16 to Real Madrid following a collapse in the second leg was just the latest humiliation for PSG in the Champions League, a series that most notably includes the 6-1 defeat to Barcelona in 2017.

Kylian Mbappe Will Never Achieve True Greatness Staying In France (Forbes)

The French striker has signed a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain, but needs to leave the comforts of home to properly test himself.

Their sporting director Leonardo is leaving, and it is expected their manager Mauricio Pochettino will also be leaving this summer. They had an agreement in place, and were getting ready to welcome him. I wanted to stay here in France, and in Paris; I have always said Paris is my house. In 1982, Michel Platini swapped Saint-Etienne for Juventus, where he won two Serie A titles, when it was the strongest league in the world, and the Champions League. He was also recognised as the best in the world, winning the Ballon d’Or three times. To be really tested; to really prove he is the best player in the world, Mbappe needed to make the step to a more competitive league this summer. Mbappe had nearly moved to Spain in the summer of 2021, but Paris Saint-Germain turned down a bid worth €200 million and forced him to see out the final year of his contract, and use the time to persuade him to sign a new one.
