Liverpool denied title but Paris can provide final flourish to superb ... (The Guardian)

Pieces were falling into place for an unlikely triumph but now Jürgen Klopp's thoughts must turn to the Champions League.

But the truth is that 92 points is, by any reasonable measure, an absurd number of points to have gathered; only once before has that not been enough to win the title, and that was this Liverpool in 2019. On a normal Sunday afternoon, Liverpool would probably have swept Wolves away but here, with the line in sight, with so much at stake, the muscles just felt a little tighter, the passing a little less fluent, the mechanisms just a little gummy. The possibility that Steven Gerrard might at last win the title for Liverpool had been teased almost to breaking point. They won and they hoped and in the end it wasn’t quite enough. Liverpool did their bit, and in the end that is all they could do. In the end it did not, but for 80 unlikely minutes it seemed as though it might.

'It's amazing, Dad!': the Liverpool fans who lent their tickets to their kids (The Guardian)

Some season ticket holders made the ultimate sacrifice for the Premier League match and watched it from the pub.

He never raised the Premier League trophy as Liverpool captain, but as Aston Villa’s manager had the chance on Sunday to help his old club to victory by beating Manchester City. “If they beat City and we win, we win the league. Their victory in the end is the difference between being able to pay £30m and £80m for a player.” They became champions for the fourth time in five seasons and Liverpool’s title dream was over. A fan for 60 years, he remembered his own father bringing him to games and watching matches from the “boys’ pen”, a small enclosure for children. “I’m absolutely distraught,” said Alexander Pritchard, who had driven up with his girlfriend from Bargoed in the Welsh valleys without tickets: “At the end of the day, we have got to give City credit. She had given her 16-year-old son, Dylan, her ticket, and was left jostling for position with vaping 12-year-olds and a bunch of Egyptian tourists who were beside themselves when Mo Salah scored in the 84th minute.

Liverpool left to look back on what-ifs as fine margins define Premier ... (ESPN)

Liverpool just came up short as Man City won the Premier League title again. But for Jurgen Klopp's men it's all about the what-ifs.

It is Liverpool's misfortune to be enjoying their peak years under Klopp at the same time City are collecting trophies under Guardiola. Over the last four years, Liverpool have won one title and finished runners-up behind City twice -- with 92 points this season and 97 in 2018-19. "There are worse scenarios -- we could have been a point ahead [on the final day] and not made it -- but we don't feel good. "I would have preferred they [City] were 5-0 up after 10 minutes so we could just play out game, but the season was close, so close. By the time Mohamed Salah managed to put Liverpool ahead on 84 minutes, City had already turned defeat into victory by scoring three times in five minutes through Gundogan (twice) and Rodri. It was the same story at home to Brighton in October, when 2-0 became 2-2, that time after being two goals clear after 24 minutes. LIVERPOOL, England -- There are always what-ifs when a team gets so close to glory.

Liverpool 2021-22 season review: Reds fell short of perfection but ... (iNews)

Daniel Storey reflects on the campaign just gone and looks at the challenges ahead as part of The Score's season reviews for all 20 Premier League clubs.

The biggest moment of Liverpool’s season didn’t come on the pitch and would surely only be surpassed by winning the Champions League final in Paris. On 29 April, Liverpool announced that Klopp had signed a two-year extension to his contract. And remarkable too that it wasn’t enough to give them a shot at the quadruple. Klopp’s side were involved in five 2-2 draws, a 3-3 draw and a 3-2 defeat in the league this season. They were brilliant and they were brilliant to watch. To an extent chaos defines Klopp’s success – “heavy metal football” and all that – and suits the team: a front three of bangs and whistles, a high defensive line and two gloriously attacking full-backs. Liverpool are unfortunate to have peaked at the same time as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Even if you consider that these two clubs and managers propel each other on, Liverpool would be more triumphant if Guardiola wasn’t here.

The Liverpool manager saw his side fall short by a point despite beating Wolves, days before their Champions League final against Real Madrid.

We were close but in the end not close enough.” It’s not cool, but it’s not completely unexpected. We now have five days to prepare the final and we face an incredibly experienced team, but that’s really OK. Losing the league today increases the desire to put it right next week.” Not today the maximum reward, but we will get it. What I learned about life is that if you stay on track and keep going, you get the reward. Klopp insisted his treble chasers would turn their Premier League deflation into a motivation when meeting the Spanish champions in Paris on Saturday. Liverpool lost out to Manchester City in the Premier League title race, and chants from Man United fans prove an important point.

Real Madrid may beat Liverpool in Paris on Saturday, and there would likely be even more doom and gloom around the Reds fan base if that were to happen. The answers to both of these are enough on their own to pick up the mood among the fanbase. With a Champions League final to look forward to at the weekend, the environment of English football’s two most successful clubs could not be more different. It’s not the first time that this particular chant and others of a similar variety have been aimed at Liverpool and the club’s supporters by sections of Man United supporters. It must not be forgotten what Liverpool have already achieved this season, and could still do before it comes to a conclusion. Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool have certainly had no problems with the former in the Premier League, accruing a total in excess of 90 points for the third time in ...

Liverpool will just have to grin and bear it for now, dust themselves down and turn their attention to attempting to win a seventh European Cup, a trophy still out of reach for Guardiola's men. The Liverpool team of the 1970s and 80s, Manchester United in the 1990s and 2000s, the Arsenal and Chelsea purple patches in the Premier League era, they were all greatly admired and - sometimes grudgingly - respected. "The accepted narrative in many parts of the media is not only that Jurgen Klopp's side play better and more exciting football, but that they have also achieved their success the 'right' way, supposedly without spending much money. Instead, if anything is tedious to the neutral observer, it's that City are so overwhelmingly successful in that approach. Narrative is an overused concept, but does apply in this case. There's a reason so many without any Anfield affiliations have an affection for Klopp's team. But true rivalry, a real deep-rooted dislike, doesn't form overnight. Apparently, anyone could do what my old team have done and it's 'bad' for football." There is rarely any jeopardy to their game, which is what made their recent comebacks against West Ham United and Aston Villa so unusual and, dare it be said, exciting. "If you hadn’t have asked then I wouldn’t say these kind of things." Mahrez is not wrong, even if hate is putting it too strongly. "I know they hate us.

How to bet Liverpool-Real Madrid UEFA Champions League Final (New York Post)

Taking place at the Stade de France, 2019 Champions League victors Liverpool will battle Real Madrid, winners of four UCL titles since the 2013-14 campaign.

For the reasons outlined above, I would play Liverpool up to -145 in regular time as I have it projected at -160. Add in its two group stage fixtures against Inter Milan and the discrepancy becomes even larger. In its last five UCL fixtures, Real’s offense has generated 1.76 xG/90 minutes. Additionally, Liverpool’s defense has played rock-steady in its last six UCL fixtures. Even if you remove the two Benfica matches from consideration, Liverpool’s offensive output drops to only 1.53 xG/90 minutes. This will be a rematch of the 2018 Champions League Final, which saw Real claim its third consecutive European crown after dispatching Liverpool, 3-1.

Handball inconsistency, and should Wolves have had a penalty at ... (ESPN)

We take a look at the weekend's big VAR talking points, with handball and a possible penalty for Wolves at Liverpool top of the bill.

That said, in this instance it was perhaps obvious from the first angle than the one the VAR chose to use to apply the lines. Some fans had questioned the use of a different angle to display the decision, claiming that the camera was not square to the players. Meanwhile, the penalty given to Southampton wasn't overturned as there was not clear and obvious error by the referee. For instance, for a throw-in the whole of the ball has to be over the whole of the line. In terms of Iwobi, he leant into the shot and the contact on the arm appears low enough for a penalty to be a correct VAR decision. Even though the referee made a clear error, the goal has to stand. It comes down to inconsistency in VAR decision-making, which will always be apparent to some degree because of the subjective nature of decisions. Referee Jon Moss gave the dropped ball to Leicester City, and the Foxes scored directly from it through James Maddison. The score was 1-0 to Manchester City late in the game, meaning Everton were denied the chance to claim a point from the penalty spot. In February, Frank Lampard's side were denied a penalty by the VAR, Chris Kavanagh, for a Rodri handball. But for a handball offence, does the whole of the ball have to be over the undefined position on the arm? We can look at a number of incidents this season, with the ball hitting the arm around the same place.

What to expect from Fabio Carvalho as Liverpool role offers hint of ... (Mirror.co.uk)

Carvalho is one of the most prized teenagers in football, and Liverpool are expecting big things once the Fulham sensation has learned Jurgen Klopp's ...

One aspect of his game which could see him get plenty of game time in his first season at Anfield, is a philosophy Silva has been keen to promote at Fulham, and teach the young star. Origi may be remembered as an out-and-out centre-forward - which Carvalho most certainly is not - but he was frequently played by Klopp as a wide player in a front three, cutting in from the left to score some of his memorable goals for the Reds. If Carvalho is considered a replacement for the popular Brazil striker, then it will be in the long term, not immediately. For the young player’s talent, Klopp is not going to change his entire system to accommodate a teenager with three Premier League starts under his belt. At 19, he is not another Luis Diaz, a world-class star who has the experience and knowledge to slot straight in as a genuine first-team starter. It is a long way from training on Clapham Common, albeit with a community-based club who have a big reputation for developing youth talent, to Anfield. Yet every step of the way, he has been pursued by Europe’s biggest clubs.

He has regularly paid homage to his original club Balham FC, and even when the speculation of his move was rife he has managed to keep his head down and concentrate on the football, which has to be admired. Most of the greats have both talent and work ethic, and Fabio has both of those in spades. His control and touch were just miles ahead of anyone at Championship level, and the fact he’s got a brilliant end product surely means he has all the capability to succeed at a high level. My hunch from watching him, though, is that he has the ability to go to the very top. I do think he potentially has the ability to play further back in the midfield as a No. 8 if he wants to.
