Manchester City produces stunning comeback to secure English ... (CNN)

Manchester City produced a simply stunning comeback to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and win the English Premier League on Sunday.

With fans still celebrating, Gundogan struck again in the 81st to cap off one of the most chaotic passages of play in Premier League history. Its win against Wolves on Sunday proved academic in the end. City's victory comes ten years after Sergio Aguero opened the floodgates to a decade of success at Manchester City, scoring a last-gasp goal on the final day of the season to win his side the league title. While players ran to the tunnel, City supporters danced on the pitch and even broke one of the goals as a spine-tingling rendition of the club's famous anthem, Blue Moon, filled the air. Fans, many of which had their heads in their hands for much of the game, ran onto the pitch at full-time to celebrate winning a title race like no other. The host knew a win on the final day of the season would guarantee the title and, despite going 2-0 down, it scored three goals in five second-half minutes to send the Etihad Stadium into delirium.

Premier League final day: Man City win dramatic title over Liverpool ... (ESPN)

Man City were crowned Premier League champions in the most dramatic circumstances, while Spurs landed fourth and Burnley were relegated.

Put simply, a win at the Etihad will be enough for Pep Guardiola's side, but failure to do so would open the way for Klopp's team to take the title and keep their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple alive. If City lose and Liverpool draw, it then goes down to goal difference, but it would require City to lose by seven goals for Liverpool to finish top. A burst forward by Raul Jimenez caught Liverpool out and the Mexico forward squared for Neto to tap in at the far post in front of The Kop.-- Mark Ogden Either title number 20, a domestic treble and 3/4 of the way to the Quadruple or the end of an improbable dream. There is still a bit of nervousness among the fans inside the stadium, although most are happy to see that it's Robin Olsen in goal for Aston Villa rather than Emi Martinez. Olsen hasn't played for Villa since joining on loan in January. His last club game was playing for Sheffield United in a 3-1 defeat to Blackburn in November. He's just kicked the ball out of play with his first touch. The danger for City now is that they have to throw men forward to get a goal but Ollie Watkins is still causing a lot of problems at the other end. An incredible and unexpected start to the final day as Liverpool fall behind against Wolves at Anfield inside the first three minutes. The energy in the atmosphere was already beginning to drift away but after that Villa goal it's completely gone. Mings has already been spoken to by Michael Oliver. Zinchenko has been up off the bench trying to lift the City fans. It may still work out for City today but it says a lot about Grealish's first season here that he's going to be a spectator for the biggest game of the season Some Man City fans starting to leave. Will regular taker Harry Kane step up to make this game completely safe at 3-0 or will he hand the ball to Son for a possible slice of personal glory? Son gets his goal to move level with Salah in the Golden Boot race.

Man City clinches Premier League title, Burnley relegated (1 News)

After starting the day in first place, City was at risk of an historic choke when it conceded twice to trail 2-0 at home to Villa.

City was fined €10 million ($12 million) in 2020 for obstructing a UEFA investigation into its finances following leaks of internal correspondence at the club. The teams entered the final round on Sunday with City 32 points ahead of United and with Liverpool the greater threat to Guardiola’s side. Yet, City was able to break the British transfer record to sign Jack Grealish for 100 million pounds ($139 million) even though the midfielder only started sparingly. But we had to do the simple things and scoring two goals quickly and then having 10 minutes to score the third one gave us the right lift. Liverpool had been locked at 1-1 against Wolverhampton but Mohamed Salah then put the second-place team 2-1 in front in the 84th minute. The importance of that goal became clearer moments later.

Intense Drama Defines Final Day As Manchester City Wins Another ... (Sports Illustrated)

A wild Matchday 38 in England's top flight ended how it started: with the defending champions atop the table for the fourth time in five seasons.

And then, just as the thought began to crystalize that Liverpool might not find a winner, that it might let City off the hook, the City comeback began. For now, the day belonged to City. There are those who are left cold by the aesthetics of how a Pep Guardiola side controls games, but its effectiveness is clear. This was the ninth time a Premier League title race had gone down to the final day of the season, and the ninth time the team that started on top had won. Did Liverpool know that the title had slipped out of reach? There was a frantic quality to Liverpool’s play, exacerbated by the loss of Thiago Alcântara to injury on the stroke of halftime. But Liverpool soon equalized through Sadio Mané and then came the goal that electrified Anfield—Matty Cash heading Aston Villa ahead at the Etihad. Could it be that, as Aston Villa manager, Steven Gerrard might at last win Liverpool the league title that had always eluded him as a player?

The result was an English record 21-game winning run across all competitions and another title race blown to pieces — a 4-1 win over an ailing Liverpool at Anfield in February serving as an emphatic exclamation point. The only blot on the season was a 3-2 defeat from 2-0 up against United at the Etihad Stadium in April, when a victory would have seen City crowned with victory over their bitter rivals. Aguero and Leroy Sane scored either side of Roberto Firmino to give City a stirring 2-1 win. By the time the teams met at the Etihad Stadium in January 2019, they were seven points ahead of Guardiola’s men at the summit. They fell eight points behind United with six games remaining but bounced back to win all of them, including Vincent Kompany heading the winner in a high-stakes Manchester derby to set up the remarkable denouement. Manager Wilf Wild added a maiden league title in 1936/37, with City plundering 107 goals over the course of the campaign — forward duo Peter Doherty and Eric Brook being responsible for 50 of those.

Pep Guardiola's side has now won the Premier League for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

The club took points off every other team in the league, though and at one point had a 12-match winning streak that ultimately fortified its place atop the table. One of those was a big one, though, helping spark the comeback from 2–0 down to West Ham on Sunday to salvage the point that put the club in position to clinch Tuesday. Man City won another league title—its second in a row—by overcoming a late two-goal deficit to defeat Aston Villa, 3–2, and hold off Liverpool’s charge on the final day of the season.

It gives a glimpse into the mindset of a team that has taken the league by storm - and is eager to do better next season. Many never expected Brentford to be in the Premier League at all; even fewer would have foreseen a 13th-place finish - and a comfortably one at that. Potter always speaks of the aim for his side being to make progress which does not necessarily mean finishing in a higher position. Their 26 games lost in the Premier League during 2021/22 was second only to the 2019/20 campaign (27). It is clear they need to find a goalscorer in the summer after no player hit double figures - Neal Maupay coming closest with nine. Lampard - who replaced Rafael Benitez in January - has achieved what he set out to do but he will know this is just the start. If it had not been for Brighton, United would be spending next season playing in the Europa Conference League - a competition befitting of this team. Boss David Moyes would have stressed how important it was to hold up their end of the bargain. Raheem Sterling made a difference too but it was the decision to turn to Ilkay Gundogan in favour of Bernardo Silva - and instead of Jack Grealish - that proved decisive. Of course, the result matters little right now and despite the scoreline, the Everton fans in attendance in north London were in celebratory mood after their escape from relegation. Instead there was recognition and appreciation from around the ground for the efforts and achievements of this Liverpool team. But when the full-time whistle blew and confirmed the destination of the crown, there was no crushing disappointment.

City's Abu Dhabi-based owners are never afraid to flex their financial muscle in the transfer market and have surrounded Guardiola with the lieutenants of his choice in director of football Txiki Begiristain and chief executive officer Ferran Soriano. With the Norway international in the fold and Guardiola also looking to upgrade his options at left-back and in central midfield, it would be a major surprise if City were missing from the title race next term. With that in mind, Guardiola knows City cannot afford to stand still if they are to finally triumph in Europe and keep Liverpool at bay in the Premier League. But even Jurgen Klopp's men, in the midst of one of the best seasons in their history, were unable to surpass City, leaving them with just one Premier League title in 32 years.

Bernardo Silva dropped into holding midfield alongside Rodri and ran the show, Chelsea failing to register a shot on target at home for the first time in 18 years. But City have not won the title because of training ground games. Three teams of six crammed on to a small pitch, flying into each other, the ball whizzing around like it is in a washing machine. What the sniping has done is solidify Guardiola’s relationship with the fans. The way in which City have gone on to lift this trophy is broadly akin to last year. Phil Foden will play a short game of two-touch to get a feel of the ball. Guardiola’s principles, however, stay the same. When the star men do not show up, the cavalry have arrived during this manager's tenure and there is something in that beyond mere ability. Last summer did bring change behind the scenes. ‘That is the best legacy. Like three years ago, the margins are minuscule. No, this is the homegrown group among Pep Guardiola's squad.

Gündogan joins Manchester City heroes in a win for the club's people (The Guardian)

Manchester City showed rare vulnerability for a super-club but recovered to win the Premier League and send their fans into raptures.

In that moment he was no longer the world’s greatest manager, no longer the representative of a club or an ideology. The moment the ball hit the net, several hundred City fans immediately stood up and disappeared down to the concourse for a pint, a pie, a cry and a rethink of their life choices. Next it was Oleksandr Zinchenko with the presence of mind to cut the ball back, Rodri with the precision to find the bottom corner. And it felt strangely fitting that at its moment of triumph, Manchester City became its people again. Gündogan sprints for the far corner, pursued by his teammates, the cameras, most of the City bench and the sound of 50,000 people. Guardiola’s first words in his post-match press conference were to pay tribute to the victims. It was there from the first press by Gabriel Jesus, charging down the goalkeeper and forcing him to punt the ball straight out of play. That skittishness was there right from the start. Sometimes it can be hard to glimpse the human face behind this sprawling super-club, with its empire of satellites, its bottomless pockets, its frictionless passing triangles, the sense of something pristine and merciless that you will never quite be able to touch. As delirious fans hurdled the barriers and poured on to the great green expanse, as the goalframe into which City had scored three goals in five minutes caved and snapped under the weight of the throngs atop it, you could already sense the events of the afternoon passing into legend. That victory is the inevitable function of mental fortitude and warrior spirit, and defeat its opposite. The record books will simply log it as another City title: their fourth in five years, Pep Guardiola’s 10th, another silhouette to add to the mural.

Player ratings for Manchester City's Premier League title winners (The Guardian)

Two of Pep Guardiola's squad are awarded 10 out of 10 for their contributions to the club's fourth title in five seasons.

Eight goals from a player signed as a centre-forward is far too low and continues a pattern: in six seasons the Brazilian has managed double figures only twice, registering a high of 14 in 2019-20 and 13 two years before. An undesired penchant for missing chances remains but Sterling can be a game-winner who this season has reverted to the driving-at-defenders forward of his earlier days at City. 8 But factor in how he can operate across attack and in midfield and how Guardiola often plumps for him as the false 9 and a richer understanding is allowed of a footballer whose ability to dazzle can suck the air from any onlooker. From full-back (mainly the left flank) Cancelo is a creative force with an eye for a pass and his geometric awareness of traffic and space is Toni Kroos-like. If Cancelo can be caught out via a quick counterattack this is a byproduct of City’s high line. What he offers is metronomic reliability and a teak-tough mentality: how the Ukrainian has performed so superbly during the harrowing invasion of his homeland by Russia is admirable. This is credit, too, to the rest of the rearguard and the attacking players: the 83 goals scored in 2020-21 has been eclipsed with 99.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City's sky blue wash will define this era (The Guardian)

The manager has become central to Manchester City's approach of setting about elite sport like a political project.

But this has also been their era, in the most far-reaching sense. Nobody was prepared for the changes wrought by this entirely different model, this entirely different set of motivations. He is now part of a tiny group – Chapman, Busby, Bill Shankly and Arsène Wenger spring to mind – whose success has also changed the way football is played, coached and understood in this country. But it does also deserve to be judged as something more than a set of buildings and a payroll. Four titles in six years: even taking out the Premier League premium that says the thing that has just happened is the only thing that has ever happened, this is one of the great title-winning eras in English football history. At the time there was a degree of mockery. That tactical influence is the most obvious part of the Pep supremacy. It is easy to take for granted the influence exerted over that time. It has been a kind of total football, the domination of every metric, a sky blue wash applied across every surface of elite English football. And, looking back, the first six years of Guardiola at City have their own very distinct tone and texture. Erling Haaland’s arrival suggests a different kind of rebuild in the offing. Within six minutes of that opening act Pep Guardiola’s champions had completed the most beautifully orderly emergency comeback in English footballing history.
