Mavs vs. Warriors Game 3: 3 Big Keys to Watch (Sports Illustrated)

The Dallas Mavericks seek to avoid falling down 3-0 in their series against the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals.

The Mavericks "won" the shot quality battle in each of the first two games of this series. When a team says "we got the shots we wanted, they just didn't fall," that tends to be overused at times. The Mavericks shot extremely poor on open shots in Game 1 as they went just 11-44 (25.0 percent) on 3-point attempts classified as being at least open. How bad was the Mavericks' offense in the second half of Game 2? The Mavericks' formula offensively has been to put up a lot of 3s and let Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson go to work with the basketball in their hands. Dallas even managed to lead by as many as 19 points at one point, until it all unraveled in the third quarter without a recovery being made. With the possibility of trailing 3-0 in the series in the Western Conference Finals, the Mavericks have little-to-no margin for error to turn things around. In the third quarter, in particular, Dallas had six compared to Golden State's 18. The Warriors have too many dynamic shooting threats that require being tightly engaged out on the perimeter for there to not be highly energetic and attentive help rotations being made. Luka Doncic had 42 points and eight assists in Game 2 after being contained to an underwhelming 20-point outing to begin the series. They trailed 2-0 in their Western Conference semifinals series against the Phoenix Suns, with a similar Game 2 collapse being the cause. They allowed 62 points in the paint in Game 2 while scoring just 30 of their own.

Mavericks fined $100K for bench decorum vs. Warriors (NBA.com)

Several players and a member of the coaching staff violated team bench decorum rules during Game 2.

In another incident from Game 2, Davis Bertans of the Mavericks got tangled up with Damion Lee after making a 3-pointer in front of the Dallas bench. Pinson signed a 10-day contract with the Mavericks during a COVID-19 outbreak early in the season. During the Warriors’ 126-117 victory in Game 2, Stephen Curry threw a pass out of bounds with no teammate in the area. He’s been out since January with a broken left foot and isn’t expected to return during the playoffs. None of the fines was from games in Dallas. Several Mavericks players have stood for most or all of the games during the playoffs, including home games.

Luka mocks Steph but Warriors get last laugh as NBA star 'murdered' by ferocious dunk.

That pushed the Warriors’ lead out to 93-83 and the Mavericks were unable to really threaten the result from that point, with Golden State cruising to victory. The Warriors had scored just 10 points in the space of 12 minutes before calling a timeout with the score at 38-31. Doncic, meanwhile, had 10 points and six rebounds to power the Dallas offence and mocked Curry with a very intentional shimmy after ending the quarter with a buzzer beater. Dinwiddie and Doncic closed the quarter with 3-pointers to draw Dallas within three points after the first quarter. Luka Doncic mocked Steph Curry with a very intentional shimmy after draining a 3-pointer as the Dallas Mavericks took it to the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 on Monday. But Curry and the Warriors got the last laugh in the end, with Doncic crushed by an Andrew Wiggins poster and more importantly, Golden State winning 109-100 to take a 3-0 series lead.

The play is under review. The box-and-one zone that Slater correctly identified the Warriors switching to hasn't been terribly effective, and Dallas has simply swung the ball around until it finds an open 3. The energy in the AAC isn't great right now for Dallas fans. Hate to be dramatic about it, but ... hey ... it is what it is. Having worked with Kevin Harlan for years at TNT, one of the great things he does, and just did again, is shout out the people that work behind the scenes on the remote crew for games. Any chance this miracle season continues better start now. Golden State has sucked the life out of this crowd — and there's still 9:32 left in the game. It reminded me: this is why players jump to block 3s after the whistle. Dallas isn't out of this, but right now, that absurd dunk feels like it killed any momentum the Mavericks had to make a comeback. •2h ago •2h ago •2h ago

The Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks face off on Tuesday in Dallas in Game 4 of their NBA Playoffs series.

Tom Miller writes: "We have the Warriors (+1) as our best bet in this contest after analyzing all of the key stats and trends for this matchup. The Warriors didn't shoot as well as in the first two games of the series. The Warriors also added 12 more points in the paint. Tipico has no influence over nor are any such revenues in any way dependent on or linked to the newsrooms or news coverage. Therefore, I'll take the Warriors to complete the sweep. Gannett may earn revenue from Tipico for audience referrals to betting services. Again, depth has been a problem for the Mavericks against the Warriors. In Game 3, Steph Curry added 31 points and 11 assists. Despite the Mavericks not turning the ball over much, the Warriors still had more shot attempts from the field. The Mavericks even had other production on the court other than Luka Doncic, with Spencer Dinwiddie and Jalen Brunson adding 20 or more points in the game. The Warriors pick each other up. Golden State is now 3-0 in the series and are currently one win away from making it to another Championship series. Jason Radowitz writes: "The Dallas Mavericks really would've liked to win Game 3.
