European nations have confirmed dozens of cases in what's become the largest outbreak of monkeypox ever on the Continent, according to the German military.

The U.S. has confirmed at least two cases and Canada has confirmed at least five so far. The vaccine used to prevent smallpox appears to be about 85% effective in guarding against monkeypox in observational research in Africa, WHO officials said. That then progresses to a rash on the face, hands, feet, eyes, mouth or genitals that turns into raised bumps, or papules, that then become blisters that often resemble chicken pox. The WHO convened an emergency meeting this weekend via video conference to look at the virus, identify those most at risk and study its transmission. Two confirmed and one suspected case of monkeypox in the U.K. were reported to the WHO just 10 days ago, the first cases this year outside of Africa where the virus has generally circulated at low levels over the last 40 years, the organization said. What do we know about monkeypox? Monkeypox isn't new. It is a viral disease originating from animals such as rodents and primates, and is transmitted to people.

As on date, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported as many as 92 laboratory confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases in 12 countries including the US, the UK, Australia, and Sweden. Public health experts say detection of monkeypox cases presents a new challenge, particularly as the world is still battling covid-19. One is the West African type with case fatality ratio close to 1%. The other is the Congo Basin type, which exhibits greater human-to-human transmission and has a case fatality ratio as high as 10%. The immediate strategy is to rapidly identify cases, isolate, treat and trace contacts. Mint talks about the outbreak and its implications. Mint talks about the outbreak and its implications. “We do know a lot about monkeypox from many decades of studying it, and respiratory spread is not the predominant worry.” But recent global cases of monkeypox were found in people who hadn’t visited West African or other countries where the virus is often found. Monkeypox is endemic in Western and Central Africa, where most cases have been found since the virus’s discovery. They normally appear a week or two after exposure to the virus, though it can take longer in some cases. Those 18 years old or older can receive the two-dose vaccine if they are considered high risk for smallpox or monkeypox. They have tested positive for orthopox, the family of viruses that includes monkeypox and smallpox. “You really need prolonged, close contact, and it’s not well-spread human-to-human. the monkeypox’s flu-like symptoms. Dr. John Brooks, a CDC official, emphasized that anyone can contract monkeypox through close personal contact regardless of sexual orientation.

The U.S. also has more than 1,000 available doses of a vaccine called Jynneos that is FDA approved for people ages 18 and older at high risk of monkeypox or smallpox. Most people who catch the virus recover in two to four weeks without specific treatments, she said. However, Brooks said many of the people affected globally so far are men who identify as gay or bisexual. Monkeypox usually begins with symptoms similar to the flu including fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, exhaustion and swollen lymph nodes. But transmission from respiratory droplets requires prolonged face-to-face contact, according to the CDC. The virus spreads through contact with body fluids and sores, Brooks said.

Dozens of people in the country became infected with monkeypox in that outbreak. “Currently, there is no global system in place to manage the spread of Monkeypox,” said Nigerian virologist Oyewale Tomori in an interview published in the Conversation last year. The factor presumed most important in the current spate of monkeypox cases, however, is that population-wide vaccination coverage against smallpox is declining around the world. Another factor pointing to reduced vaccinations is that the average age of those infected with monkeypox has increased with the amount of time since the smallpox vaccination campaign ended. The spread of monkeypox in West Africa could also indicate that the virus has appeared in a new animal reservoir. A study by Rimoin and her colleagues showed the rate of cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo may have increased 20-fold between the 1980s and mid-2000s. Many of the infected people in the U.K. are men who have sex with men and contracted the disease in London, UKHSA reports. According to the World Health Organization, all of the infected people in the U.K. contracted the West African clade of the virus, a version that tends to be mild and usually resolves without treatment. Experts suggest that factors such as population growth and more settlements near forests, as well as increasing interaction with potentially infected animals, favor the transmission of animal viruses to humans. The agency is currently tracking the contacts of those infected. The cluster of cases in the U.K. is rare and unusual, says Susan Hopkins, UKHSA’s chief medical adviser. The increase comes after previous evidence had suggested there was unknown transmission of the monkeypox virus within the country’s population, according to the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Monkeypox is thought to originate in rodents in Central and West Africa, and it has repeatedly jumped to humans.

Researchers in the UK have revealed promising yet tentative signs that an antiviral may help to reduce illness from the virus. In 2020 the DRC had more than 4,000 suspected cases and at least 171 deaths. Monkeypox Spreads To 19 Countries: All You Need To Know (NDTV)

The World Health Organization has revealed that there are now 131 confirmed cases of monkeypox, and a further 106 suspected cases, in 19 countries.

We get a headache and muscle aches because of all the chemicals - such as cytokines - which get released to fight the infection. You can use it to treat people who get diagnosed and vaccinate the people around them. I think the expectation by most scientists is that this will self-limit eventually, especially when the awareness is so heightened, because it doesn't transmit that easily. That's what you assume and hope is going to be the case with most people who have been vaccinated already. You might say that for flu and the coronavirus, both of which are respiratory viruses. It starts with a headache and fever, the usual things that you deal with when you get a viral infection. In this case, the view is that it's spread through contact with contaminated fluids from an infected person and it needs to be relatively close contact. The virus which is currently circulating seems to be the strain that is endemic in West Africa. The best way to know how related the cases are is to sequence them. This outbreak seems quite unusual in that cases are being reported in so many different parts of the world all at the same time. Both are endemic in different parts of Africa - Central Africa and West Africa, respectively - and there have been occasional cases reported outside of the African continent, usually from someone traveling from an affected area. The World Health Organization has revealed that there are now 131 confirmed cases of monkeypox, and a further 106 suspected cases, in 19 countries.
