The Anfield club can win their seventh European Cup, a tally that would see them go level with AC Milan and leave only Real with more victories.

Champions League Final: Live Updates Ahead of Kickoff (The New York Times)

The Spanish champion is seeking its record 14th European title on Saturday in Paris. Liverpool, the Premier League runner-up, is chasing its seventh.

Liverpool has, of course, be in this spot before: It lost to Real Madrid in the 2018 final. A favorable knockout-round draw and a helpful upset — not to mention playing some of the best soccer in the club’s history — meant that its opponents were swatted aside relative ease. Real Madrid faced all the so-called new money clubs in the knockout rounds, and in doing so came face to face with elimination multiple times. It has now played a quarter of the all the finals that have been contested, in fact, including — after Saturday — five of the past nine. As of 15.00 on 26.05 until 18.00 on Sunday 29.05 it is prohibited to wear any football club colours in the area of the Champs Elysees. This includes scarves, hats, displaying banners etc. That might have been related to a warning issued to supporters of both teams that they risked fines of 135 euros (almost $150) if they turned up wearing club colors in places like the Eiffel Tower or the Champs Élysées, the grand avenue that is typically flooded with visitors. Real Madrid is in the final for the fifth time since 2014; in each of its previous four visits since then, its fans will quickly point out, it has left town with the trophy. Chelsea, Manchester City and P.S.G. could not disabuse Real Madrid of its abiding belief in its own agency; Ancelotti and his players have plenty of reason to be confident that Liverpool will go the same way. Europe and the rest of the world. Ordinarily, at a club as proud and demanding as Real Madrid, those twin embarrassments would be enough to spark some sense of mutiny. Real was imperious in the first leg against Chelsea. That aside, it has had to weather fairly consistent storms. Just give Real Madrid the trophy and save everyone the bother.

LIVE Champions League final: Liverpool, Real Madrid clash in Paris (ESPN)

Will Real Madrid win a record-extending 14th European crown? Can Liverpool avenge defeat in the 2018 final? Follow ESPN's LIVE coverage to find out!

Liverpool and Real Madrid are no strangers when it comes to the Champions League, having met in the final twice before, first in 1981 and then again in 2018. Furthermore, Liverpool have not beaten Real in the Champions League since 2008-09 when they thrashed them 5-0 on aggregate in the round of 16. Another win for the Spanish giants tonight would see them claim the cup for a fifth time in nine years. No other English side have ever reached the final of all three competitions in the same campaign. Benzema has also scored a career-high 44 goals in 45 games for Real in all competitions this season, with Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich (50 goals) the only player in all of Europe's top five leagues to have registered more in 2021-22. Real Madrid have gone early with their team by announcing their starting XI a full hour before it has to be submitted to UEFA. Coach Carlo Ancelotti has selected Fede Valverde ahead of Rodrygo in his front three. Liverpool's team bus has had a struggle to get through the traffic to make it to the Stade de France. Jurgen Klopp and his players are only just arriving now, having been temporarily stuck in traffic on the motorway close to the stadium. So while Real's players are now beginning to stroll onto the pitch to get an early feel for their surroundings, Liverpool's team are still waiting to get off the bus. And in defence, Ibrahima Konate is chosen ahead of Joel Matip alongside Virgil van Dijk. Thiago had been the biggest doubt, having limped out of the win against Wolves six days ago with a tweaked hamstring. Jurgen Klopp's side dispatched Inter Milan, Benfica and Villarreal in the knockout rounds while Carlo Ancelotti led his team past Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City in a series of comeback wins. Twice Klopp came up to talk to him and Naby Keita has been warming up with the starters. Those hundreds of supporters who have been waiting idly outside for the last few hours unable to enter through the crowded turnstiles would probably beg to differ.

Real Madrid finished second in La Liga last season to qualify for the Champions League. It topped Group D with five wins and one loss. It won all six of its Champions League group-stage matches and then beat Inter Milan, Benfica and Villarreal in the knockout round to advance to the final. (Scottish club Celtic in 1966-67 became the only team to achieve a quadruple of major European trophies). Liverpool won a pair of domestic cup competitions earlier this season. Twelve minutes later, after a Sadio Mané equalizer, Gareth Bale angled an acrobatic bicycle kick over Karius, who again became the focus of fan ire when Bale drilled a long shot through his hands to score 20 minutes later. The governing body initially described the reason for the delay to late-arriving fans, but updated the attribution as a “security issue.” Thiago made his return after sustaining an injury during Sunday’s Premier League finale. Its best chance came around the 20th minute when Sadio Mané cut inside and unleashed a shot that hit the near post as Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois scrambled to recover. Champions League final delayed as Liverpool fans report chaos ... (The Guardian)

Kick-off in Saturday's Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in Paris had to be delayed by 36 minutes amid safety concerns.

At the Euro 2020 final last July, thousands of fans surged past security at Wembley and there was fighting in the concourses. In Spanish “security problems” were blamed but the English announcement was clear in pointing the finger at “the late arrival” of fans. At about 8.45pm local time, by which point the Real Madrid end of the stadium was full but there were still swathes of empty seats in the Liverpool end, an announcement was made that kick-off would be delayed. The Associated Press journalist Rob Harris reported that Uefa staff had intervened to prevent security personnel from going after media to stop them from filming as tear gas was deployed. There was footage of some, presumably without tickets, climbing the fence and running past stewards, but the vast majority remained in the overcrowded queues for security checks. There were chaotic scenes as security checks led to bottlenecks and police deployed pepper spray or tear gas, again raising serious questions about Uefa’s organisation of a major event.

The outpouring of joy when the full-time whistle went was largely tinged with relief -- those fans know what an ordeal this night was. Numerous flares were let off as that end of the stadium began to glow red and smoke filled the chilly Parisian air. They had the best seats in the house to witness Liverpool's near-perfect first half, but fortunately for them the only thing they hadn't seen up close was a goal. The concrete stairs inside the Stade de France began to shudder as the celebrations from Real fans lasted almost five minutes. In the last third we could have done better," Klopp said after the match. It was a suitably tense end to what had been an enthralling first half. Then, out of nowhere, Carlo Ancelotti's side looked as though it had taken the lead completely against the run of play. It was a strange sight. Passes were going astray, clearances were being skewed and both sides struggled to find any inroads into the opposition's area. Salah's second chance arrived soon after, but this one was hit straight at the Real goalkeeper. When the full time whistle went, Real's bench erupted and emptied onto the pitch. Chances were few and far between for Carlo Ancelotti's side, but it only needed one.

Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 to win the UEFA Champions League, the 14th European title for the Spanish club. Here are the main talking points.

And the result Saturday left Liverpool without their seventh European Cup. So how can we judge a season that promised so much, yet ultimately ended with disappointment? And he was unmarked because Alexander-Arnold lost his man at the key moment, allowing the 21-year-old to find the space to claim the cross and score past Alisson. Alexander-Arnold's defensive shortcomings are the main reason why he is no longer Gareth Southgate's first-choice right-back with England, but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp remains fiercely loyal to his player because of the attacking qualities he brings to the team. Courtois continued his heroic performance in the second half, before and after his team's breakthrough goal, to seal a compelling case for the man of the match award. And Ancelotti now moves ahead of Liverpool's Bob Paisley and Real's Zinedine Zidane as the most successful coach by winning it a fourth time. But while Vinicius' goal was the decisive moment, Real owed their victory to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who made a succession of crucial saves throughout the game.

Why the Champions League Final Was Delayed (The New York Times)

European soccer's showcase game was delayed more than 30 minutes after overcrowding at the stadium gates led to clashes between fans and the police.

The security official said that “it was a police decision” to close entry and exit points. Tommy Smith, a Liverpool fan who had traveled to Paris from Ireland with a group of friends and family, said his group had arrived two hours before the scheduled kickoff and found that there were few entrances where fans could present their tickets. “Thank you to the very many police forces mobilized this evening in this difficult context.” “Thousands of British ‘supporters’ without tickets or with counterfeit tickets forced entry and sometimes assaulted the stewards,” he wrote. One group of V.I.P.s, delayed because of a problem scanning the Q.R. codes attached to their tickets, scaled a fence in an effort to get to their seats. The confusion, and rising anger, created a potentially dangerous situation in which French police officers, wearing helmets and carrying shields, used canisters of what UEFA, which runs the Champions League, said was tear gas to keep the surging crowds at bay.

Implacable self-belief carries Real Madrid to Champions League glory (The Guardian)

Carlo Ancelotti's side had come back from the dead so many times en route to the final but for once they didn't need to in Paris.

And so in an era when most managers espouse a philosophy, when we talk of grand tactical schema and the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s juego de posición and Jürgen Klopp’s gegenpressing, the first manager to win the Champions League four times is Carlo Ancelotti, who is as mutable and pragmatic as they come. Modric’s outside of the boot pass to Benzema to equalise against Chelsea at the Bernabéu is the defining moment of their campaign because it required such virtuosity at such a vital time. But this has not been a normal season for Madrid. They have survived by their nerve, by their capacity to produce moments of brilliance when they have needed them. At the very last he was there, claiming a cross from the left in a crowded box and giving it one last punt downfield. The rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone in injury time was less a rousing call to one last surge than a mournful hymn of defiance. The only difference between the final and what had gone before was that this time there was no point at which Liverpool apparently had the game won, and Karim Benzema didn’t score.

Champions League final highlights and report: Vinícius Júnior ... (UEFA.com)

Vinícius Júnior scored the only goal as Real Madrid beat Liverpool in Paris to win the European Cup for the 14th time.

- 1-0 is now the most common score in UEFA Champions League finals. We’ve achieved something that nobody expected of us at the start of the season, and we've done that thanks to our quality, our commitment, our history, everything. They have enjoyed an outstanding campaign domestically and in Europe, but it's a huge shame it had to end in this most painful of defeats. They get the job done, whatever it takes, and thanks to Courtois and Vinícius they are 14-time European champions. Madrid threatened to add a second on the break thereafter, but not for the first time, they had done just enough. Karim Benzema did have the ball in the net before half-time only for VAR to intervene.

Champions League final chaos shows France in bad light, say ... (The Guardian)

Jean-Luc Mélenchon criticises 'confrontational policing' at Paris final, saying country seems ill-prepared for future events.

Mélenchon said the police’s job was to “ensure calm” and “prevent things going badly” but that they had done the opposite and “aggravated” the situation. It concluded that after the match, supporters were dispersed without difficulty and there were “no major incidents” in the two fanzones elsewhere in the French capital. He thanked the police for their work “in this difficult context”.

Real Madrid embellish Champions League legacy in beating ... (ESPN)

Real Madrid have won more than twice as many European Cups as any other team, and that carefree pedigree showed in their latest win over Liverpool.

Not with Courtois, in the prime of his career, staking a claim as the world's No. 1 between the posts and getting a few things off his chest. Except, even without Mbappe, you suspect this won't be their last -- not when there's a guy like Ancelotti, one of the few men who can pull off the cardigan-cigar-shades combination and lead a team in transition to a league and Cup double. There was David Alaba, demanding and getting a massive chest-bump from his defensive partner, Militao. They needed a spark and they got it from the way they defended. Madrid were on the ropes, but this is a team that knows how to both dazzle and suffer. When Madrid tried to play from the back, they were met with the twin central barrier of Salah and Sadio Mane, with Luis Diaz on the left and either Jordan Henderson or Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right. "This was maybe the most difficult Champions League [win]," Benzema said. That's what happens when arithmetic grants you the league early: You have the luxury to rest and recuperate, tweak and tinker, eyes and minds fully engaged on the prize. He was also able to call upon, on paper, his first-choice XI, but the vibe was different. But the tools of victory were those they had employed in earlier rounds: belief, unflappability and experience. And now the Kylian Mbappe snub isn't quite so infuriating -- it has to be satisfying to win a European Cup in his city, a 10-minute scooter ride from where he was born and raised. But perhaps no team has ever become champions of Europe after overcoming such a tough run in the knockout rounds: Mbappe's (and Lionel Messi's) Paris Saint-Germain, defending champions Chelsea and then Manchester City and Liverpool, No. 1 and No. 1a in most fans' unofficial power rankings. (Or, as club president Florentino Perez put it after the game: "Mbappe is forgotten now and that's OK ... Madrid had a perfect season."

Liverpool demand 'unacceptable' Champions League final scenes ... (ESPN)

Liverpool have demanded an "independent" investigation into the chaotic scenes outside the Stade de France before Saturday's Champions League final.

Television footage showed images of young men jumping the gates of the stadium to gain entry. Other people outside, including children, were tear-gassed by riot police, a Reuters witness said. "We understand that there were a lot of different experiences that took place over the course of the evening and it's imperative that we hear from supporters.

UEFA says it will review pregame incidents at Champions League final (The Washington Post)

France's sports minister accused "thousands of English fans" of "attempts of intrusion and fraud" at the Champions League final won by Read Madrid.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson called the organization of the match “a shambles” after a friend to whom he had given a ticket was denied entry into the stadium. The Champions League should be a celebration but it wasn’t that.” It wasn’t a nice experience, not a nice final to come to. “I heard a few things that were not good, it was obviously pretty tricky out there but I don’t know more about it.” “We have officially requested a formal investigation into the causes of these unacceptable issues.” “Violence has no place in the stadiums.”
