The Lakers are hiring Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, a first-time head coach, to replace Frank Vogel.
Injuries to James and Anthony Davis have certainly played a factor in the downturn, but Ham will have his hands full working with a top-heavy roster that includes Russell Westbrook, who struggled mightily in his first season in Los Angeles. Ham has spent the last nine seasons working under head coach Mike Budenholzer in Atlanta and Milwaukee, winning a title with the Bucks last season. He was also said to be a “ serious candidate” for the Hornets’ vacancy.
The former NBA player had served as the Bucks top assistant for the past few seasons, winning a title with them in 2021.
The 48-year-old Ham is getting his first head coaching job as the 28th coach in Lakers history. The Michigan native played collegiately at Texas Tech. Vogel led the Lakers to the franchise’s 17th title exactly 18 months before his firing.

Ham now joins the Lakers to lead the franchise as a first time head coach. One of Ham’s first tests as coach will be finding a way to better integrate Westbrook on both ends of the floor. Wojnarowski added that Ham made a strong impression on the Lakers’ brass in several areas, including his championship pedigree, his commanding presence and his history of coaching stars.

But this season marked the second consecutive disappointing finish for the team after the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last year against the eventual Western Conference champion Suns. Vogel's contract had been extended last offseason through the 2022-23 season before his firing. He also has experience with stars, coaching Giannis Antetokounmpo for the past four seasons.

But he did win a championship with the Bucks last year, and he very much impressed this Lakers' front office. Ham is coming from the Milwaukee Bucks, where he was an assistant for a very good team. But the latest report from Woj says that the Lakers have come to a decision.
The Lakers have hired Milwaukee assistant Darvin Ham to be their next coach. It will be Ham's first head coaching job in the NBA.
The search to land Ham was largely uneventful, a change from the drama-filled process of replacing Walton in 2019. Ham is the second first-time coach the Lakers have hired in their last three searches. He’ll be the 28th coach in Lakers history and the fifth Black coach. Ham also played in Spain and the Philippines. Ham, 48, spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks, winning a championship last year. He’s expected to meet with current Lakers staff members next week.

The Lakers are banking on that being a trend of sorts and hoping Ham can return them to prominence. Eventually, all that culminated in a strong final interview with owner Jeanie Buss in Los Angeles. And she’s not the only on in L.A. who is a fan of Ham. Ham maintained as the pick of LeBron and made a strong impression during his initial interview process.

“Congrats and welcome Coach DHam!!” The 48-year-old Ham will become the 28th coach in Lakers history. He replaces Frank Vogel, who was fired at the end of the season after the Lakers failed to make the playoffs.
Can new coach Darvin Ham guide the Lakers back to postseason glory? Here's what should sit atop his priority list.
With Davis missing extended periods due to injury and the Lakers needing all hands on deck, that changed last season, when James' playing time bumped back up to 37.2 MPG -- fifth highest among players who saw action in at least 50 games. After sitting out six games to rest in 2015-16 and five in 2016-17, James hasn't missed any for that reason since while criticizing the concept of load management. Thanks to the combination of his long-term contract and Westbrook's expiring one, Ham should enter those discussions with greater leverage than Vogel had. The best way to maximize the former MVP is to make sure Westbrook plays with four shooters at all times. As recently as 2020, the Lakers were still center stage at this point of the playoffs en route to the 17th championship in franchise history. And how can the Lakers' front office put their new coach in better position to succeed than Vogel?

The appointment of Ham means a majority of coaches in the NBA are now from ethnic minority backgrounds for the first time ever. Vogel led the Lakers to the franchise's 17th title exactly 18 months before his firing. Including the Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra, who is Asian-American, that makes 16 coaches from black or minority ethnic backgrounds, which is a majority for the first time ever.
The Lakers have finally made their decision on who will be the next head coach in LA. Milwaukee Bucks assistant head coach, Darvin Ham, will now be taking ...
Now, the work will begin for Ham as a first-time head coach. Darvin Ham knows what it is like to work with championship-level athletes and could be a solid addition to LA. However, the name that apparently stood out was Darvin Ham. Some may be concerned by this decision, but none of that matters because Ham has received the highest praise.
The Lakers have hired Bucks assistant Darvin Ham to be their new head coach, and LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and other players like the hire.
Congrats D Ham.https://t.co/P2Ttq8S4l7 He keeps it real with you. A tough-as-nails former player who paid his dues as an assistant, hiring Ham has shades of the Ime Udoka hiring in Boston — and that has worked out brilliantly.
What's your reaction to the Lakers hiring Darvin Ham? Howard Beck: By all accounts, Ham is an excellent coach—respected, knowledgeable, hard-working and a great ...
They really need to overhaul the entire roster after James and Davis, and that’s going to be a really steep task. Even if the trade makes no sense from a value standpoint, the Lakers need to better complement AD and LeBron. Westbrook doesn’t do that. Nadkarni: LA still needs to work the trade machine for Russell Westbrook. I see the growing chatter that he may play for the team next season. The Lakers need to add defenders. And the bigger issue with Russ is he’s not the player he used to be. Someone needs to disillusion the Lakers about Russell Westbrook; Ham may have to be that person. In addition, it’s a reminder for me that coaching was not necessarily the biggest issue for the Lakers last season. If he doesn’t earn their trust, the team can’t be put in the best position to succeed. By all accounts, Ham is a good hire and a rising star in the coaching ranks. The Lakers are reportedly hiring Darvin Ham to be their next coach. There has been plenty of buzz that the Lakers were sitting on a more established coach (Doc Rivers, Quin Snyder), and there’s risk to bringing a first-time head coach on board a team (theoretically) built to win a championship. He won a title as a player (in 2004 with the Pistons, beating the Lakers) and as an assistant coach (in 2021 with the Bucks). It's a bit surprising that Los Angeles went with someone who's never been a head coach in the NBA before, given the stakes and pressure that come with this particular job, but that doesn't mean Ham can't handle it.

They were so impressed by Ham that they passed over a planned interview with Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and offered the Bucks assistant the job. Ham sold the Lakers’ brass with his ability to communicate and hold people accountable. Ham was granted some power before he accepted the job on a four-year contract.
Darvin Ham will be the Lakers' next head coach, with no experience as a head coach. It sounds crazy, but that strategy in a crazy franchise might work.
Then the reality of an aging roster, and injuries to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, set in. Then there’s Westbrook. He wants to control the ball. “We have to now find the right coach to lead this team. Ham will not only have to win James’ approval but also carefully orchestrate his minutes next season when James is expected to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the league’s all-time leading scorer. It appears that hiring him is a sign that the Lakers are hoping to make their two biggest stars work together again. But he can’t control the ball. Depending on the style of play that that coach wants to play, given the roster that we have, it all has to start to come together.” It has been written here that the Lakers should trade James or Davis or both, but that’s probably not happening. But Rivers didn’t get fired from Philadelphia, and the 76ers weren’t going to give him away, so the Lakers ultimately couldn’t pursue him. “Something that I learned from Phil Jackson is that there’s always a path to success. It could be an absolute disaster. Maybe this team with seemingly no chance at winning a championship needs a coach with nothing to lose.

It may not have worked out well with Luke Walton, but Darvin Ham has a lot of talented players who could improve if a good coach comes around. According to Bill Plaschke from the Los Angeles Times, choosing Darvin Ham is similar to a past head coach for LA. Darvin Ham is now the Los Angeles Laker's newest head coach.
After the Lakers ended last season without going to the playoffs and disappointed fans everywhere, it was clear there would be some big changes happening.
This inevitably led to the Lakers interviewing Frank Vogel and hiring him as the head coach for LA. He also did not get a choice in his own assistants. However, the Lakers are making sure they offer Ham what he needs to be successful. After the Lakers ended last season without going to the playoffs and disappointed fans everywhere, it was clear there would be some big changes happening.

He put the time in on the practice floor and it was always a nice carryover in the game. He also is capable of communicating in a way where you can receive it the right way. “... Darvin was such a hard worker. “He was working hard, working all the players out, worked me out,” Sandiford-Artest said. Metta Sandiford-Artest — then known as Metta World Peace — was on that Lakers team and remembers tabbing Ham as a future coach. He remembered Ham as someone who would never “bulls— in practice” because he was too committed. Every time he got in the game, he just raised the level of play. “He brought the heat to practice every day. He’s a true competitor, has always been a competitor,” Thomas said. Hard-nosed, hard-working, but a great person.” “I’m sure if you talked to the guys that he played with, he was probably their favorite-teammate type dude. Hard-nosed, hard-working, but a great person.”
According to sources with knowledge of the process, Ham will be given a large amount of autonomy, including the ability to choose his own coaching staff. He's ...
He understands locker room dynamics with eight years in the NBA as a player. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported on Friday night that the staff was expected to include head coaching experience. He won a ring as Mike Budenholzer’s favorite assistant in Milwaukee. By basically every account reported, Ham was impressive in the interviews. Even if the front office was ultimately vindicated given Kidd’s recent success, it was still bad process and played a role in the Lakers missing out on Ty Lue. He’s expected to meet with current Lakers staff members next week.
Darvin Ham carved out a nearly decade-long career due to being respected and loved in the locker room. After years as an assistant coach, ...

After hiring a first-year head coach in Darvin Ham, the Lakers new staff will likely include more experience, including head coaching.
But getting an experienced staff around Ham is imperative and a great early sign for the Lakers. Still, he has the respect of the Lakers stars in LeBron James and Anthony Davis, though it remains to be seen how much that will matter in the coming weeks and whether it’s enough for him to stay around. The Lakers finally found their new head coach on Friday evening, hiring Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham on a four-year deal. It feels pretty safe to say the former will not be an option but nothing would immediately rule out the latter. Ham made a strong impression on Lakers in several areas, including his championship pedigree, his commanding presence, history of coaching stars and toughness. Stotts, though, has reportedly expressed a desire not to be an assistant coach.
The 48-year-old Ham won NBA championships as a member of the 2004 Detroit Pistons and as an assistant coach for the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks.
Ham also becomes the NBA’s 15th Black coach, a marked increase from September 2020, when there were only four. Ham inherits a team that dealt with injuries and fit issues while posting a 33-49 record and finishing 11th in the Western Conference under Vogel, who was dismissed just 18 months after leading the Lakers to the 2020 title in the bubble. Eyeing a return to the playoffs after a disastrous campaign that led to the firing of Frank Vogel, the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to hire Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham as their next coach, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Friday.
