The spray tan was applied; the glitter was slathered on – here's what happened in the Dancing with the Stars finale!
Brodie chooses the Pasodoble. It’s tight and fierce and even better than the first time she performed it. And it’s tens across the board! Jazz returns to repeat the quickstep. It’s as we have come to expect from Jazz: Slick and fun. Elektra thanks the Dancing with the Stars costume department and all I can say is AGREED. It’s a ten for me, but a nine from Elektra and Karen. Lance gives an eight which I am not happy about. She looks gorgeous and the dance is stunning. Tens across the board baby. The judges are beside themselves. She really looks like a professional dancer and it’s beautiful. This is the kind of TV I need at the end of the week. He praises the experience so far and says he’s blessed. Dave Letele is just so loved; he really is the people’s champ.

And this season of DWTS came into our lives at a time we needed a bit of escapism most and it delivered that in bucketloads. That meant it was down to Thornton and Kane to battle it out with one final epic performance and both gave it their all. Which meant Jazz Thornton and Brad Coleman were the winners of DWTS 2022. The dance was powerful, the judges and audience were thirsty and Coleman was proud as punch. Kane and a sexy smooch with partner Johns stole the show and the judges gave it three perfect 10s - but there was no guarantee Thornton's 1.8 million TikTok fans would agree. Our final show dance was Kane and Johns and the broadcaster finally got her Proud Mary moment. In fourth place, despite working tirelessly, bouncing back from all of the dance-offs and surviving saying someone other than me was his favourite, Vaz was eliminated. Then came the moment when we would learn who made our final two, and who would be sent home. And in third place Letele did himself, his community and his family so proud. Vaz and Brittany Coleman are up next and the theme was ... bondage? Letele's up first revealing he initially didn't feel he fit in on the DWTS stage, despite having the love of the public and partner Kristie Williams. Sporting a bedazzled Butter Bean Motivation top, Letele owned the stage and personified joy. Tonight, head judge Camilla Sacre-Dallerup was struck down and replaced by the very likeable Strictly Come Dancing champ, Karen Hardy.
She and dance partner Brad Coleman were crowned the winners on Sunday night.

The final text vote between Brodie and Jazz was one of the closest on Dancing with the Stars NZ record. Jazz says her journey on Dancing with the Stars NZ was “one of the most life-changing” experiences she’s ever had: “Being on this show has been phenomenal. Tonight’s live episode saw reality star Alex Vaz, broadcaster Brodie Kane, former professional boxer David Letele and Jazz Thornton dance their hearts out for a chance at the glitterball trophy, but it was Jazz who impressed New Zealand’s public most.

It took a few weeks for Brodie to click into that confidence, but one she did, she became one of the best things about the season – and a much-needed burst of energy in these past few weeks. After a beautiful dance, reminiscent of Manu Vatuvei’s emotional winning show dance in 2019, Jazz cinches a win that seemed to be coming since the very start. From about the second week on, Jazz’s win was about as close to a foregone conclusion as I’ve seen. He was never the best in the competition, and seemed to be on the verge of going home since the very start. To make it to the finale is impressive. To make it to the finale after nine knee surgeries is hero behaviour.
Mental health advocate Jazz Thornton began this season of Dancing with the Stars with just one term of high school dance experience under her belt.
With Coleman’s patience, she slowly worked on the aspects of dancing that made her uncomfortable. She slowly learned to trust her dance partner. We don’t know what to say, but people are willing to learn, and they’re willing to listen, and they’re willing to try. “I couldn’t shake my hips, and Brad would have a hoody around my hips to try and make them move. “A lot of the time we don’t know how to have these conversations. “It took a lot to build that trust, it took a lot to take those walls down,” she said.
After six weeks and more than a few tussles with Covid-19, the show limped to the finish line last night. Sam Brooks wonders if it was worth it.
This season of Dancing with the Stars wasn’t really evidence that we’ve moved on. I’ll leave the last word to the poet laureate herself: While there are ways to mitigate the risk of Covid, we know that any kind of live event is never going to be 100% risk-free. Sure, we still get the 1pm updates, we still see people wearing masks everywhere (hopefully), and it’s understood that our loved ones might drop off the face of the planet for seven days at a time. There are the schedules of the stars, the crew, the presenters, and hell, even the ad slots to negotiate. Reality TV works like a funhouse mirror to the world we live in. For me, this season of Dancing with the Stars was a reminder that we are still very much in a pandemic. I come to this from a place of empathy: I work in live theatre, an industry that is slowly, surely, lifting its foot off the brake after a two year standstill. In that way, the series is closer to a long-running theatre show. People’s livelihoods rely on this show, and I’ve no doubt the cash injection is a much-needed boon for the charities for whom the stars danced. There was the shock elimination of Sonia Gray, followed by the even more shocking elimination of Eli Matthewson. Oh, and then Eric Murray and Rhys Mathewson were forced to withdraw from the competition due to Covid-19 at the semi-final stage. For those 90 seconds, you could pretend to forget all the bumps in the road that got us here.
Last night Jazz Thornton and Brad Coleman danced their way to the coveted mirror ball trophy on Dancing with the Stars. Today, they still haven't had a ch.
"Luckily I avoided it while on set. "We had no expectation that we'd make it to the final let alone win. Now that they've danced their last, it's time for a well-earned break for the pair.
