Oli Sail error costly as All Whites slip to defeat against Peru (1 News)

Goalkeeper fails to control a back pass in 1-0 loss and Peru take full advantage as New Zealand gear up for World Cup qualifier.

The All Whites now travel to Doha, Qatar, where they face Oman behind closed doors on Friday NZT ahead of their playoff against Costa Rica. Peru had eight shots on target, with the All Whites managing only two. A goalkeeping error from Oli Sail allowed Peru to score on their way to a 1-0 victory over the All Whites in Barcelona on Monday morning NZT.

Clayton Lewis (Stamenic) and Nando Pijnaker (Smith) came on after halftime, with Lewis in particular making a positive impact. The All Whites' best first half moment came in the 43rd minute, with Greive stinging the palms of the Peruvian keeper. An alert Sail tipped away a goal bound cross – after Kirwan and Tuiloma were exposed on the right – as Peru upped the ante. Cacace then found Wood, who directed the ball back to the St Mirren striker, for a clean first time shot. Peruvian supporters had converged from across Spain - and the world - and were ready to celebrate, with their flares, fireworks and magnificent songs, often accompanied by drums or a brass section. The game will be remembered as one of the great occasions in New Zealand football history, with an electric atmosphere.

It was a nightmare moment for Sail – who took a heavy touch from a Tim Payne back pass - allowing Lapadula an easy task. An alert Sail tipped away a goal bound cross, as Peru upped the ante. It had all started hours before the game, with incredible scenes outside the stadium. It was one of the great occasions in modern New Zealand football history, with an electric atmosphere.

Goalkeeper error hands Peru goal in 1-0 win over All Whites ahead ... (Stuff.co.nz)

A heavy touch from OIi Sail gifted Peru the decisive goal in an intense match in Barcelona featuring few clear-cut chances.

A beautiful mind crunching all the player stats. An individual error ultimately provded the difference, but Peru certainly put the All Whites under more pressure than vice-versa, and that would have contributed to the mistake. You need journalists close enough to smell the liniment. How much will Sail’s error weigh on his mind heading into the playoff against Costa Rica? Might Marinovic get the nod instead? Having shown his hand with regard to his No 1 goalkeeper, an error at the back would have been the last thing Hay wanted. The English Premier League forward then laid the ball off to Alex Greive, whose shot swerved towards Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, who could only palm it away.

All Whites even chance of qualifying: Rufer (Otago Daily Times)

New Zealand's greatest player has been in Dunedin all weekend, taking groups of talented junior players for coaching sessions at Sunnyvale, and staying on today ...

"Today, everybody is good. "This is a cup final because there’s so much at stake. Wellington rugby, the Hurricanes and the Phoenix were all going to be on site, Rufer said, and he was excited at the prospect of getting the best young footballers from around the country through its doors. It’s the world trend and it’s the same in New Zealand. Every single player in every position, including the goalie, in the top teams is technically unbelievable, and that filters down." "When I was a professional player, the best players in terms of technique were the strikers or the offensive midfielders. On Friday, he hops on a plane for Doha to (fingers crossed) watch the All Whites upset Costa Rica and qualify for the World Cup for just the third time, joining the heroes of 1982 and 2010.

But the luck ran out when the ball was passed back to goalkeeper Oli Sail who coughed it up with a heavy touch, allowing striker Lapadula to swoop and volley into an open goal. "I think, as the game progressed, we got over that little bit of fear factor around just playing our natural game." "That’s the first time since November 2019 that we’ve actually played in front of a crowd, believe it or not," Hay told reporters.

The South American side look to be the strongest of the four teams chasing the final two places at the World Cup, so it will have been a boost to the All Whites that they competed so well as their meeting with Costa Rica draws closer.

NZ Football and Football Australia have been keen to play this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the first meeting between the two nations, in Dunedin in June 1922 – a match that was also both countries’ first international altogether. Pragnell said the match would be “enormous” and that he was “100%” looking to fill Eden Park, which has a capacity of just under 50,000 – an achievement that would make for the largest football crowd in New Zealand history.
