Smith said they had a responsibility to excite the nation and kick off the World Cup season against a similarly inexperienced Wallaroos side. Debutant Black Ferns wing Ruby Tui said they brought a “cool vibe” into the team, as well as a wealth of knowledge. “I was going for a jog every morning, then to the gym, then having a cup of coffee with my wife,” Smith said. The 65-year-old, known as ‘The Professor’, has come out of retirement to lead the Black Ferns in a pivotal season for women’s rugby, as New Zealand hosts the women’s World Cup for the first time in October and November. Smith, as well as Henry and esteemed scrum coach Mike Cron, appear to be energised in a new environment that needed a shake up ahead of the World Cup. They have four months before the start of the World Cup with a new team, including seven debutants for the Pacific Series opener against Australia in Tauranga on Monday, to guide the Black Ferns in the right direction after slumping to record defeats against superior opposition in Europe. Four heavy defeats to England and France demonstrated a shift of power to the north.

New era for Black Ferns starts on winning note against Australia (New Zealand Herald)

A clear tactical switch was evident from the Black Ferns in the second half – now far more willing to kick and play at the right end of the field. This allowed the Black Ferns to build and apply pressure. In the earlier Pacific Four Series match Canada easily accounted for USA 36-5. Once the match was underway it didn't take long for contrasting tactics to emerge. It was high risk, adventurous, and often left them under pressure through handling errors in their own half. Second half tries from Bremner and player of the match No 8 Kaipo Olsen-Baker, who beat two defenders with a storming blindside surge to the line, pushed the Black Ferns ahead for the first time in the match.

Black Ferns turn on power to beat Wallaroos and start brave new era (1 News)

First-up win for new coaches Wayne Smith and company after New Zealand recover from uncertain start in difficult conditions.

This was despite replays showing Leti-I’iga wearing a forearm to the jaw. Down 10-5 at halftime, the Black Ferns were in the match provided they showed greater tactical nous in the difficult conditions and they did more than that – they dominated the Australians with their greater desire in the second half. In the end it was convincing, a victory which owed much to the vastly improved aggression in the second half from their pack, who turned an ordinary set piece around to dominate the Australians, and an extremely helpful injection of talent and energy from their reserves bench.

Black Ferns run down Wallaroos in Pacific Four opener (ESPN)

Australia's quest for a historic victory over New Zealand has fallen short with the Wallaroos going down 23-10 in a rain-sodden Test in Tauranga.

With seven debutantes in their squad, New Zealand started to find their feet after halftime with a new front-row getting them on the attack. Leti-I'iga then scored their fourth try after fulltime to cap a courageous fightback for the Black Ferns. A Cramer penalty put the lead out to 10-0 but the Kiwis got on the board in the 31st minute when Kendra Cocksedge took a quick tap and winger Ayesha Leti-I'iga dived over.

Wallaroos fall short against Black Ferns in soggy New Zealand Test (The Guardian)

Australia's quest for a historic victory over New Zealand has fallen short with the Wallaroos going down 23-10 in a rain-sodden Test in Tauranga.

Leti-I’iga then scored their fourth try after full-time to cap a courageous fightback for the Black Ferns. After having a try disallowed for an illegal bind, flanker Alana Bremner made no mistake in the 48th minute to lock up the match 10-10. But they were unable to turn their 10-5 lead into a maiden win.

The Wallaroos pack continued to impress but a new front row brought on early in the second half by the Black Ferns shifted the momentum decisively. Conditions made it difficult for New Zealand's backline to get involved but the Black Ferns made the most of it when they did finally get into the Australia half and winger Ayesha Leti-I'iga scored in the corner. The New Zealand side, featuring seven new caps, scored four unanswered tries from the 32nd minute to overhaul the Wallaroos, who they will meet again in their opening match of the World Cup at Eden Park on October 8.

The Black Ferns have opened their Pacific Four series campaign with a 23-10 victory over the Australian Wallaroos at a slippery, muddy Tauranga Domain.

Her heads-up play led to Leti-I’iga’s second try at the death, an overhead pass. Hazel Tubic used her nous and experience to good effect at five-eighths. They also had, in No 8 Kaipo Olsen-Baker, just a month past her 20th birthday, the outstanding player on the day.
