Queen Elizabeth II delights crowds by making a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on the final day of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations ...

Spats aside, Prince Louis seemed to bounce back, and was seen having a cuddle with mum during the remainder of the parade. The balcony appearance is the centrepiece of almost all royal celebrations in Britain, a chance for the public to catch a glimpse of the family assembled for a grand photo to mark weddings, coronations and jubilees. Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki said "as a parent of a four-year-old not in line to the throne, Prince Louis we see you and we understand you."

The backlash against the Duchess of Cambridge over her four-year-old son's behaviour at the Queen's Platinum Pageant is absurd.

I read the books, I listened to the podcasts, I consulted the experts, and still that kid had tantrums in public and said inappropriate things to strangers. I have three kids, one of whom never needed discipline at all, one of whom was easy to manage, and one of whom was damn nigh impossible. As the headlines screamed, “Kate cannot control her children!“, I remembered the days I could not control mine.

On several occasions, he's seen sticking his tongue out, being distracted by his cousins in the seats behind, and even covering his mum's mouth when she gently tries to curb his behaviour - moments that will have resonated with anyone who's ever looked after a young child. At one point, William and Kate have a discussion and then Louis can be seen running along the seats to sit with his grandfather, Prince Charles, who manages to keep him entertained for a while. In adorable pictures and footage - some of which was shown during BBC One's live coverage - Louis can be seen pulling a series of faces and refusing to co-operate for his mother.

Prince Louis' silly expressions and interaction with his mother, Duchess Kate, were a highlight during Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee.

His cheeky expressions mirrored Charlotte's viral photos from the inaugural King's Cup charity regatta in August 2019. She was formally crowned on June 2, 1953. The 4-year-old also tried covering his mother's mouth during the Platinum Jubilee Pageant.

The internet has declared Louis “a mood” and his greatest hits have been collated into “tag yourself” collages of photographs, where you decide which of his facial expressions best represents you. Some blamed the prince for “showing up his mother”, especially during the minor meltdown when he held his hand over her mouth and stuck his tongue out at her. His epic fidgeting included puffed-cheek boredom, glaring, standing on his chair, covering his face with his hands, brandishing a cushion, crossing his arms huffily and some vigorous head-shaking. He dramatically covered his ears and roared, stuck his fingers in his mouth, looked thunderously disapproving as he saluted, and grimaced at the sky. You might have also enjoyed Louis’s smörgåsbord of reactions to the interminable and utterly weird jubilee pageant yesterday. I’ve been sealed in my bunting-proof chamber for the past week, reading Milton. He was widely declared to have stolen the show at Thursday’s trooping the colour, which he watched from the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Kate's message after Prince Louis furore (New Zealand Herald)

Prince William and Kate Middleton have acknowledged the wave of commentary around their youngest child's behaviour at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

"If that's the lack of discipline and boundaries they're raised with, I guess that's how you get adults like William," another wrote. "This is exactly why Meghan and Harry don't want to make their children available for public consumption. "And to be clear – I'm criticising the parents here. "Thank you to everyone who turned out to show their gratitude to The Queen and her inspiring 70 years of leadership. Meaning parents need to set boundaries n stick to them." There's a whole gap between robotic and straight-up badly behaved.
