We have gone through the settings for the most popular (and problematic) services to give you recommendations. But perhaps the most curious twist to the Apple watch experience is that you might not need to own one to get a taste. Data and Privacy: A guide to every privacy setting you should change now. Once WatchOS 9 arrives, for example, wearers will be able to take a closer look at the quality of their sleep. Notifications from apps will also now roll in from the bottom of the screen, so they won’t cover up the photo and font you picked out for your new custom lock screen. Meanwhile, Apple watch owners concerned about cardiac health will be able to see how much time their hearts spend in beating abnormally — known as “AFib,” or atrial fibrillation.

WWDC 22 live updates: Apple unveils iOS 16, the latest update for ... (USA TODAY)

iPhone owners will get the first glimpse of how their devices will change during Apple's keynote Monday at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

The most notable rumored update Apple could reveal is iOS 16 supporting an always-on display, which could provide basic information to users without having to wake the device. Visual lookup will not only spot items in an image and allow you to search them, but you can grab specific elements in the photo and paste them into a message. Notifications will stream from the bottom of the screen with iOS 16, and users can even hide them completely. Apple is upgrading to M2 chips, the latest version of the chips which will run future Mac computers. The app can manage access to your device, disable location sharing, or set up an emergency reset of your phone. Ventura, the name of the new macOS, will include Stage Manager, a feature which will let Mac users focus on the app they're using without the clutter. Apple is introducing some updates to the in-car system CarPlay. Among them: upgraded odometers with an Apple aesthetic, widgets providing trip information, navigation tools and weather details. Passkeys can't be leaked or compromised, said Apple. With a Passkey, you can sign up or log in to a service just using the iPhone. Let's say you start a call on the iPhone. If you're near a Mac, it will alert you asking whether you want to continue your call on the Mac. Another incredible feature: the ability to use your iPhone as a really fancy webcam. It's now the iPad's turn, which is also going to get a big update this fall. There will be a new display scaling setting, to adjust the size of an app's view when multitasking or using the split screen feature. All the operating systems will become available to users this fall.

A user can also choose to send photos to the Shared Library automatically using a new toggle in the Camera app. Browsing in Safari is even safer with passkeys, unique digital keys that are easy to use, more secure, never stored on a web server, and stay on device so hackers can’t steal them in a data breach or trick users into sharing them. Users can choose to share existing photos from their personal libraries, or share based on a start date or people in the photos. They will also work across apps and the web, and users can sign in to websites or an app on non-Apple devices using just their iPhone. Now users can schedule emails ahead of time and are even given a moment to cancel delivery of a message before it reaches a recipient’s inbox. CarPlay will be able to provide content for multiple screens within the vehicle, creating an experience that is unified and consistent.

Performance measured using select industry‑standard benchmarks. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Pro. The power-efficient performance of M2 helps the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro meet Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency. And, M2 delivers the peak performance of the PC chip while using just a quarter of the power.2 When compared to the latest 12-core PC laptop chip — which needs dramatically more power to deliver an increase in performance and is therefore found in thicker, hotter, more noisy systems with less battery life — M2 provides nearly 90 percent of the peak performance of the 12-core chip while using just one-fourth the power.3 M2 brings all of this — plus new custom technologies and greater efficiency — to the completely redesignedMacBook Airand updated 13-inch MacBook Pro.

macOS Ventura adds powerful productivity tools and new Continuity ... (Apple Newsroom)

macOS Ventura, the latest version of the world's most advanced desktop operating system, takes the Mac experience to a whole new level.

Users can choose to share all of their existing photos from their personal libraries, or share based on a start date or people in the photos. Users can also now lift the subject away from an image and drop it into another app. The result is accelerated performance that provides gamers with a more responsive feel and graphics that look stunning. Passkeys make it simple to sign in securely, using Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification, and iCloud Keychain to sync across Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV with end-to-end encryption. Metal 3, the latest version of the software that powers the gaming experience across Apple platforms, introduces new features that take the gaming experience on Mac to new heights and unleash the full potential of Apple silicon for years to come. In macOS Ventura, Safari introduces a powerful new way for users to browse together: With shared Tab Groups, friends, family, and colleagues can share their favorite sites in Safari and see what tabs others are looking at live. Users can also build a list of bookmarks on a shared Start Page, and even start a Messages conversation or FaceTime call right from Safari — great for planning a trip or researching a project together. Handoff now comes to FaceTime, allowing users to start a FaceTime call on one Apple device and seamlessly transfer it to another Apple device nearby. Continuity Camera now gives Mac customers the ability to use their iPhone as a webcam, and unlocks new capabilities that were never possible before on a webcam. Users can quickly find what they are looking for as soon as they click into search, including recent emails, contacts, documents, photos, and more, all before they even start typing. Stage Manager works in concert with other macOS windowing tools — including Mission Control and Spaces — and users can now easily get to their desktop with a single click. “macOS Ventura includes powerful features and new innovations that help make the Mac experience even better.

It’s a truly amplified take on the audiovisual experience. With its cinematic feel, sizzling visual effects, and tactile gameplay, Castaways is a force to be reckoned with. Developer: Lux Optics (United States) The game’s unique mechanic provides plenty of freeflying fun, but its environmentally conscious storyline — and the subtle empathy involved with playing as another living being — teaches a crucial lesson. Rebel Girls shares the stories of the world’s most influential women — Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Simone Biles, and Frida Kahlo, to name just a few — through rich audio and gorgeous original art. The game’s narrative unfolds with a richly animated minimalism, the gameplay puts a novel spin on the rhythm game, and the end result illustrates how seemingly disparate design elements can work in perfect concert. The app is packed with a mountain of data but designed to be as easy to navigate as a run on the bunny slopes. With its sensational designs, playful haptics, and elegant gamification, this life hack adventure plays out as an inspiring journey through forests and mountains — it makes tracking habits a truly artistic experience. An Apple Arcade original, Wylde Flowers brings a refreshingly diverse storyline and cast of LGBTQIA+ representative characters to players with a witchy twist. Procreate, a world-class tool for artists and designers, brings people more creative power than ever through its iPad app. The winners were chosen from 36 finalists, all of which have demonstrated outstanding technical achievement. This year’s winners include developers from around the world who were selected for delivering innovative, creative, and beautifully designed experiences through apps that inspired users with vision, purpose, and brilliance.

The Apple Store website is down, which suggests that Apple might also announce new products during the WWDC 2022 event. But the event is also a homecoming for many Apple employees who have been working remotely for the past two years because of the pandemic. Apple is working with companies like Ford, Nissan and more to support the next generation of CarPlay and said the next vehicles that support it will start to be announced late next year. The medications app on Apple Watch makes it easy for users to conveniently and discreetly track medications anytime, anywhere. Any health data backed up to iCloud is encrypted both in transit and on Apple servers. Ensuring all employees are paid on time, correctly, and according to their entitlements while maintaining confidentiality is essential. Using signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, Apple Watch can detect when users are in REM, Core or Deep sleep. This gives more detailed information, like time asleep, alongside additional metrics, like heart rate and respiratory rate, in sleep comparison charts in the Health app on iPhone. For runners, Apple says the watchOS 9 includes new metrics such as stride length, ground contact time and vertical oscillation. In addition, new alerts, including pace, power, heart rate and cadence, can be added to guide users throughout the exercise. During the workout, they can follow the pace alerts and metrics provided. For swimmers, Apple says kickboard detection has been added as a new stroke type for pool swim workouts. When each workout is complete, a redesigned summary page in the fitness app offers additional details with interactive charts for more precise analysis. Apple says the familiar in-session display now uses the digital crown to rotate between easy-to-read workout views so that users can see important metrics for different training styles. It says the new portraits face showcases the depth effect on more photos, including cats, dogs and landscapes, while Chinese scripts have been added as options for California and Typograph watch faces.

Apple unveils its car at WWDC – sort of (RCR Wireless News)

Apple took the wraps off new Macs, a new CarPlay and more at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) this week.

WWDC gave Apple an opportunity to reveal new versions of the operating systems for its watch, iPad and Mac coming this fall. Apple will begin selling the new laptops starting in July at the same price as existing models and has discounted the existing 13-inch MacBook Pro to make room for the new models. Apple touted iCloud Shared Photo library at WWDC as a convenient new way for families and friends to share memories. Apple’s emphasizing new productivity features like Stage Manager to better manage the clutter of many open apps. Apple received fierce criticism earlier this year for the webcam in its premium-priced $1,599 27-inch Studio Display, which users said produced very low-quality images. Apple, a long-time Arm licensee, developed its own custom silicon to power the iPhone and the iPad. But for years, Apple’s Mac computers continued to use microprocessors made by Intel and a succession of Intel and third-party graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia and rival AMD. Apple said 98% of new car models sold in the U.S. support CarPlay — in its current implementation. Which ostensibly gives CarPlay app makers a year or so to get things with the new tech right, before people start messing around with their custom dash designs. Apple Inc. kicked off its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on Monday with an ambitious vision of CarPlay’s future, and promised buy-in from automakers, though it’ll take a while before new features actually make it to cars. As with other tech giants, Apple uses its developer event to frame both public and developer expectations. But Apple’s new CarPlay implementation is certainly a much more ambitious and complete reach than Android Auto. Apple introduced a lot of new technology this week, but it’s probably worth noting what Apple didn’t introduce: Any new Augmented Reality (AR) headset or VR device.

The new Wallet features are designed to attract more people to Apple Pay and keep customers locked into the iOS ecosystem.

And because of Apple's scale with more than a billion devices in use, a lot more people are about to be exposed to these products. But things are moving slowly in some areas, such as last year's feature that lets you add your driver's license, which is available in just a couple of states in the U.S., and with a few more expected soon. It could be a tough time for Apple to launch a new product designed to get people to buy more stuff if those trends persist throughout the year. Apple's new rivals in the buy now, pay later space have struggled in recent months as consumer spending shifts from goods to services. Many of these features aren't designed to make money for Apple directly, but they do make Apple Pay more attractive for people who haven't tried it yet. But Apple's new Wallet features are also coming at a time of great economic uncertainty.

Apple's Screen Time gets a handy new feature plus updates to ... (The Verge)

But I want Apple to allow me more control over my child’s devices, especially when they are a little older and want to explore more of the internet. Privacy advocates will tell me “You should trust your child.” I do trust them, and I constantly discuss with them why I have controls set up and what they should be watching out for when they’re online. Apple’s biggest selling point for parents is how integrated it is — and Family Sharing means you don’t have to buy the same apps or subscriptions multiple times. It would be nice if this were a toggle you keep turned on for your children’s devices, as seeing exactly what your tween has been taking pictures of is a feature some parents might appreciate. It was announced at Apple’s WWDC conference this week, along with a few other upgrades to Family Sharing, Apple’s slightly confusing and very convoluted umbrella term under which Screen Time sits. With the request sitting handily in my Messages app with a dropdown menu that presumably will give me the same four options — approve for 15 minutes; an hour; all day; or, my favorite, don’t approve — I can handle the demand on my time rather than hers.

Here are the biggest changes coming to your iPhone in Apple's new ... (CNBC)

Apple's iOS 16 offers the biggest change to the look of the iPhone's lock screen since 2014 and includes improvements to apps like Messages, Mail, and Maps.

The iPhone has an excellent, photo-quality camera that can record in 4K or 8K. Wouldn't it be better to dial into a Zoom call with that instead of the lower-quality camera on your laptop? Safety Check. A new feature called Safety Check enables users to quickly turn off all services and apps being shared with the user's family, such as location. Building on last year's Focus mode, Apple now enables users to have entirely different wallpapers or app setups for different times of day, like when the user is at work or asleep. Apple Maps is getting an update that will allow you to add different stops to a route. Plus, Apple Watch owners will be to monitor their sleep and heartbeat in the iPhone health app. Users will be able to add smaller widgets with real-time data like the weather forecast on the lock screen, and even change the font of the clock for the first time. Apple Wallet in iOS 16 will also make it easier to share digital car or home keys through messaging. Apple is also adding artificial intelligence features that can translate text in photos or videos that the user takes. But now the app is using artificial intelligence to automatically share photos with up to six people based on who's in the photo — such as kids or family members. Apple Maps can add multiple stops to a route. The other user won't get a notification but will see that the message has been edited or recalled. So, if you want these features and still have that phone, it may be time to upgrade this fall.

Continuity Camera: Apple explains how your iPhone will become a ... (The Verge)

Apple software engineer Karen Xing spent some time explaining how the new Continuity Camera feature for macOS Ventura will actually work at WWDC 2022 ...

Apple figured out a way to bend and crop images from the iPhone’s super-ultrawide lens to let you show off things on the surface of your desk without moving your phone. macOS Ventura will automatically switch to your iPhone if it’s mounted on a stand and either plugged in via USB or detected as “nearby” using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. FaceTime isn’t the only app that’ll “magically” switch to your iPhone when you plop it down. macOS will detect your iPhone as a camera and microphone, period, so every camera app should work. You can turn your iPhone to any orientation, and it’ll still work. You get a zoomed-in effect if your iPhone’s in portrait orientation.

Apple's watchOS 9 and its new features, including a medications app (ChannelLife New Zealand)

The new watch0S 9 gives users more watch faces, an updated workout and sleep app and a brand new medications app.

The medications app on Apple Watch makes it easy for users to conveniently and discreetly track medications anytime, anywhere. Any health data backed up to iCloud is encrypted both in transit and on Apple servers. This gives more detailed information, like time asleep, alongside additional metrics, like heart rate and respiratory rate, in sleep comparison charts in the Health app on iPhone. Using signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, Apple Watch can detect when users are in REM, Core or Deep sleep. For runners, Apple says the watchOS 9 includes new metrics such as stride length, ground contact time and vertical oscillation. For swimmers, Apple says kickboard detection has been added as a new stroke type for pool swim workouts. As the network expands, so too does the potential attack surface that cybercriminals can exploit. In addition, new alerts, including pace, power, heart rate and cadence, can be added to guide users throughout the exercise. During the workout, they can follow the pace alerts and metrics provided. When each workout is complete, a redesigned summary page in the fitness app offers additional details with interactive charts for more precise analysis. It says the new portraits face showcases the depth effect on more photos, including cats, dogs and landscapes, while Chinese scripts have been added as options for California and Typograph watch faces. Apple says the familiar in-session display now uses the digital crown to rotate between easy-to-read workout views so that users can see important metrics for different training styles.

But as is the case with any of these services, consumers ought to be aware of the risks and manage them carefully. They can condition consumers to make purchases without feeling the pain of parting with cold, hard cash. As Apple’s customers increasingly start to use the Pay Later service, it will gain from merchant fees. Apple will benefit from its huge market and brand power, with the capability to attract millions to its products and services. It’s likely Apple is trying to consolidate its foothold in the world of consumer finance, and increase its profitability. Currently its reach in the retail world is evident, with iPhone-based payment services accepted by 85% of US retailers.

Apple has quietly built an automated Photoshop into iOS 16 (TechRadar)

Apple's iOS 16 has some secret photo-editing skills that appear to be jabs at Photoshop and Google's Magic Eraser.

Of course, Adobe won't idly stand by and let Apple and Google eat its editing lunch, even if Apple appears to be coming at it sideways. There's no reason why Apple couldn't extend the concept to let you, for example, select and replace a drab sky with a more dramatic one. Apple usually leaves these kinds of tricks to the best photo editing apps, but it's now dabbling with automated Photoshop skills.
