Infamous ship-jumping twin Joanne Ingham found dead in motel (Stuff.co.nz)

The Ingham twins hit the headlines in 1997 after stowing away on a ship, then swimming 19km through shark-infested waters after jumping overboard.

Mid-last year, after concerns were raised about the former emergency housing complex, the property emptied of nearly all its former tenants, according to neighbours. "We have not made a lot of progress with the other problem, which is alcohol." On Tuesday, MSD said the motel was no longer being used for that purpose. The twins were no strangers to courtrooms after their return. Police were called to the Harbour City Motor Inn on Webb St in Te Aro about 2.40am on Tuesday after the 43-year-old’s body was found. During a court appearance in Wellington in April last year, Olney said Ingham had gone eight years without offending.

Joanne and Sarah Ingham first came to international attention in 1997 when they were 18. By just after 1pm, the scene at the motel was almost abandoned. “I’m still the father and I’m still alive,” he said at the time. He said there were often drug deals outside the building, and a corner room was ruined in a fire and its occupant left “in a hurry”. A member of the church opposite the hotel told the Herald that disorder – and subsequent police presence – used to be a frequent feature of the area, as it was formerly used for emergency housing, but the issues had mostly ceased when the hotel changed hands. A single police car was parked on the street, and another was halfway down the road at the intersection of Webb and Cuba Streets.

The Ingham twins became household names when they jumped from a container ship into shark-infested Queensland waters to swim to shore.

“We have not made a lot of progress with the other problem, which is alcohol.” On Tuesday, the ministry said the motel was no longer used for that purpose. Sarah married Ja’afar, by then 31, in an Islamic ceremony in the southern village of Muar, having converted to the Muslim faith. When they came up, “the ship was way gone”. It turned out they were just past Princess Charlotte Bay, north of Cairns. He hasn’t had anything to do with my kids.” Salleh reached out to the media, saying he missed his boys. Ja’afar reckoned it was two hours of swimming – it turned out to be much longer, through shark and crocodile-infested waters. “Are you going to settle down a bit, do you think?” The pair were taciturn and reluctant in every on-screen appearance. They had one backpack between them, four life jackets and four buoys, when they took the plunge on April 20. What happened to her in the years between? Her twin Sarah was seen outside the motel later that day, in tears.

The unforgettable Ingham twins (The Spinoff)

Linda Burgess on the enduring legend of Joanne and Sarah Ingham, the twins whose story captivated the nation in the 1990s. New Zealand has a place, ...

A conversion to Islam. Home from Malaysia in 2004 on a holiday they didn’t return from. Joanne and her sailor had sworn to be true to each other, he’d written the letter, she’d copied it out and they’d signed it with their blood. And in due course the blood oath was fulfilled. It wasn’t Holmes who crafted their story, and the story didn’t stop. He asks Joanne what she thought about that, her boyfriend untying her sister, and she gave one of those shrugs that said far better than 1,000 words that Sarah was asking for it. They said they wouldn’t tell, and they did. There was something to do with a foreign sailor – so, a love interest. There was Holmes – a legend! He’s quiet, he probes gently, he’s kind, he’s not for a minute trying to dump them in it. It was when Sarah got that look on her face that Joanne’s previously implacable, strategic boyfriend decided that they weren’t getting to shore fast enough, so he untied Sarah from their shared buoy. There was a pause. You’ve got most chance of having the word applied to you if you’ve been a top sportsman.

Adventure and pain: The tragic life and death of Joanne Ingham (New Zealand Herald)

Tragedy and infamy plagued their lives and now Joanne Ingham has been found dead in a Wellington hotel room, aged just 43. Kurt Bayer reports on a short life of ...

We will be holding a blessing and prayer tonight and over the next three days," he said. And within weeks, they were caught trying it all again. The twins were taken into police custody facing immigration and burglary charges. The sisters said the aborigines had promised not to dob them in. They had been wanted by police after failing to show up at Nelson District Court on theft and assault charges. Joanne wanted to attract the attention of passing planes by waving for help from the beach. She wouldn't "nark". She told them, but would go with Ja'afar's story, that they had separated at sea, and she hadn't seen them again. A spot check by the ship's captain found the fugitives inside their cabins. and accept a cheeky offer of a few drinks aboard a visiting ship. She would later convert to Islam and marry him. A 27-year-old sailor, Ja'afar bin Mohamed Zan, took a shine to Sarah and, after prevailing in an argument with one of his crewmates, he hid them in adjoining cabins. Tragedy and infamy plagued their lives and now Joanne Ingham has been found dead in a Wellington hotel room, aged just 43.
